I wish this darn thing released already, have a vacation coming soon then its literally back to school for the kids. (meaning more expenses) so I hope they release this thing while I still got money in the bank. I don't know why most companies always wait to 4thQ to release the stuff we want. Actually I do know why but that's a different discussion lol. Anyway this machine with a base i7 or xeon and a 970m 17in 1080p with win 10 installed is what I could go for right about now.
spare me the relax and calm down motifs and the lectures I know all that stuff already and I am a very patient person just a little venting is all it is lol

are you suuuure u wanna go skylake...?
link: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review-6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/10
quote: "There’s no easy way to write this.
Discrete graphics card performance decreases on Skylake over Haswell.
This doesn’t particularly make much sense at first glance. Here we have a processor with a higher IPC than Haswell but it performs worse in both DDR3 and DDR4 modes. The amount by which it performs worse is actually relatively minor, usually -3% with the odd benchmark (GRID on R7 240) going as low as -5%. Why does this happen at all?
So we passed our results on to Intel, as well as a few respected colleagues in the industry, all of whom were quite surprised. During a benchmark, the CPU performs tasks and directs memory transfers through the PCIe bus and vice versa. Technically, the CPU tasks should complete quicker due to the IPC and the improved threading topology, so that only leaves the PCIe to DRAM via CPU transfers."
ouch, that must hurt...

Basically AnandTech declined to test against the 4790K in order to save Skylake face because it would wipe the floor with it in gaming benchmarks
-
MichaelKnight4Christ Notebook Evangelist
Very sure I do want it yea, these type of test results always vary and sometimes they even contradict their own results and findings. This chipset is still very new and its only two cpu's out of whatever else will follow. The main reason I want skylake is not based on current performance of the 6700k, its to have the newer motherboard and possible upgrades of the future. For people who already bought haswell or the 4790k its still a great platform and naturally it will still be relevant for the years to come.
Thanks for the post though it was a good read but in no way does it hurt me since I have bought nothing yet first of all and the findings seem a bit shallow and bias also. I still plan on waiting for skylake since it will be the platform for future intense 4k and above quality in video and apps. Those dated gpu's they tested it on can no way predict how the cpu will respond with modernized gpu's that take advantage of the newer tech. I still want skylake and I look forward to the next intel show but my options will always be open until then however that article did not persuade me one bit.Last edited: Aug 14, 2015 -
I think at this point most people are upgrading for platform features rather than performance already. the new thunderbolt 3.0 with usb type c seems pretty promising and some people may be looking forwards to HEVC encoding and decoding
-
Yeah I know. CPU performance increase is secondary to the platform upgrade if you're coming from Sandy Bridge or newer. If you're upgrading from Bloomfield/Lynnfield you get a sizable improvement in both.
-
and tbh I doubt any enthusiasts right now really expect intel bring any major improvements in the CPU, I personally just hope that TB 3.0 gets widely adopted because it actually is kind of a game changer
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Is it confirmed that TB 3.0/USB 3.1 will enable dock for external GPU? If so, then why would I care if the upcoming Nvidia mobile "flagship" is soldered? If 980M/990M can no longer handle 1080p titles at some point, I can just buy a dock with some future Volta desktop graphics card, no?
What are these fancy desktop contraptions of which you speak? I believe you spelled Clarksfield wrong.
Last edited: Aug 15, 2015 -
Since there's no mobile Skylake yet I can only discuss the desktop chips, and at the end of the day there's not a whole lot of difference.
Clarksfield was terrible. I had a 740QM. Mobile Sandy Bridge alone was almost a 2x improvement. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Well, there is the first mobile Xeon CPU, but no idea how it compares to say, 4790K or Broadwell HQ, etc., for 4k motion graphics files and similar tasks.
I know, I know, can't wait to finally upgrade! My old laptop still runs fine for most of the stuff I do, but I'm like this on the XoticPC shopping cart every day
-
Mobile Xeon, meh. Just a rebranded Core i7 with ECC support like all the other Xeon E3.
-
@MichaelKnight4Christ: sure, since we all know how unprofessional and biased anandtech's reviews are, right? *rolleyes*

@jaybee83: I think you interpreted my post the wrong because I never said their reviews are unprofessional or biased, actually when you say it like that it makes it seem like I'm against them on a whole or something but of course that's not the case. I do however, think that particular report was a bit shallow because they were testing the newest cpu's with gpu's that were older and that can skew the results. I also find it strange they didn't compare the results with more modern gpu's like the 900 series nor did they use a 4790k for comparison since that is the top dog of haswell quads. I just find that article a bit strange tbh I think their a great at what they do but their not going to be perfect all the time.
-
Are you sure you didn´t say that?
The 980 is there.... And in some benchmarks the 4790K is there also. When it isn´t you can see where the 4770k ranks and you already know that the 4790k is better, so...Last edited: Aug 15, 2015Bullrun, alaskajoel and jaybee83 like this. -

I don't like when people do that, of course that's not what I said. I think article was either rushed or incomplete or was made with a certain agenda in mind and it does not represent the entire future of skylake chips I'm sorry no. like I said before I'm not buying skylake for the 6700k or 6600k I'm buying it for all the future support the new mobo will include. You quote me but why dont you quote jaybee too? After all my comment was in reply to his go back a page and read what he said too.
This is why people who buy when I buy wont be disappointed my last laptop purchase was made 6years ago, my thoughts on it : new OS plus new CPU boards, plus new gpu , plus all the extra features of t my last upgrade was nearly 6 years ago the new tech like usbc/tb3 greater ram ect....equates to a win and the "right time to buy" in my head. Articles like this one are in no way going to change my gut feeling and experiences on the matter.Last edited: Aug 15, 2015 -

Pure speculation on my part, but I figured why not, its been a few days since anyone updated this thread:
https://twitter.com/XMG_UK/status/633316227910397952
The tweet mentions checking out 'some brand new XMG machines', and the event is during the bank holiday weekend i.e. 28-31 Aug. Its possible of course that the new machines are the mini desktops that XMG sells, fitted with the new Skylake processors and motherboards, but the timing is also around when the Multicom site mentions expected availability for the DM. -
Based on comments in other clevo threads your speculation looks on point.

Just so as not to confuse people it would be firmware raid if using the intel management. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Even with two PCIe x4 m.2 slots, are we losing half the PCIe lanes if we connect drives to both of them? In other words, do they drop down to x2?
And then how about if you connect eGPU via TB3 port? That would further reduce the x4 lanes available for the m.2 drives, no? -
Oh man...my body is ready!
My wallet....work in progress
Plan to simultaneously replace my laptop and desktop with one of these monsters.
Skylake has a bucket load more PCIE Lanes than Haswell did so all lanes should be full x4 capable simultaneously. 16 lanes attached to the CPU and 20 lanes from the Z170 chipset. For comparison the Z97 chipset only had 8, which dissappear very fast with wifi/ethernet/3g and other accessories.moviemarketing and jaybee83 like this. -

This product will be in stock on Thursday, 01 October 2015.

Assuming the same as the desktop 20 PCI-E 3.0 lanes come from the chipset, the link to the CPU is 4x 3.0 so that's the maximum throughput combined. So any one PCI-E 4x 3.0 device can be maxed at any one time.
-
thx for proving my previous point! as u can see, the 4K QD1 numbers actually decrease significantly in raid0 and even the single drive can barely beat a highend sata drive, if at all

Not only that thermal throttling is really bad with sm951
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk -
at least u can take care of that easily with either a small heatsink or a thermal pad. cant do anything about the 4K performance though...

In regards to the M.2 slots, what official confirmation does anyone have that the 2nd slot is keyed for PCIe x4. Any chance there's a miscommunication on the M.2 specs referred to in Lightning's post?
If one tries to configure one of those machines from the reseller in Poland, the 2nd M.2 drive only allows for non-PCIe x4 drives. Web site just need updating? I'm wondering if this part of Batman 2.0 will still be the same as P7x0ZM model.

Woot! Woot! Answered my own question... From the Polish reseller's web site for Tech Specs:
-1st for WLAN Combo M.2 2230 Card with PCIe and USB interface
-2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interface
-3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 interfaceLast edited: Aug 20, 2015jaybee83 likes this. -
the chipset definitely brings more than enough pcie lanes, which was exactly the culprit with the ZM series only supporting a max. of one 4 lane m.2 ssd

Then again that was how much bandwidth the chipset had I suppose for storage. It does make it a bit more flexible though if you want other devices that don't really use much bandwidth.

Why coollaboratory liquid ? Are you going to remove the HIS ? I read that this heat conduction paste can damage the cpu, some people had to sand down the radiator and the HIS to clean this paste. Other people find themself with the cpu soldered to the radiator ! Rumor or reality ?

The upgrade is worth it from what I'm seeing more pcie, greater ram capacity, usbc/tb3, choices of gsync and or 4k screens(weren't available with the zm at launch), and other minor improvements after learning from the original zm prototype. I remember asking in the first thread nearly a year ago why would they release the zm now since intel stopped making haswell, and was prepping broadwell at the time. The answer was simple, it was to pave the way for future laptops using the next available shrunken dies. Even the tb3 (which I caught some heat here for wanting it in the zm in the first place) are now available in the dm even with larger 17in 4k screens.
