Two PCIe and two SATA3. It's missing a 2.5", but it's got an ODD bay to make up for it.
Any idea when the 980SLI is supposed to happen? Unfortunately, I need the laptop before Christmas! Going to be working out of the office for a couple weeks then. Also, would they be the 120W? TDP variants too?
-
the phoenix has two m.2 pcie and two sata3 as well....
hard to say, since it will be a "prema edition", so to say. i think the idea is to hook up two 180W cards in the phoenix

No no, it has two M.2 PCIe, two M.2 SATA3, and one (two with ODD gone) 2.5" SATA bay. Which I think should be SATA3 now, but I'm not 100%. From what I've read, the P870 just has two M.2 slots which are hooked up to both PCIe and SATA, and two 2.5" SATA3 bays.
Maybe Prema would like to chime in on when that's happening?

Does anyone with a prototype have any insight on CPU temps running cinebench? Hopefully with fan on auto rather than 100% speed

Just stay tuned as Prema and Mr Fox are working together to provide a full line of testing and documentation of results.ajc9988 likes this.

Yeah I hear ya
I was looking at the P770DM, but then saw this thread, and this sounds a lot better. Just biggest concern is temps, as the ZM I had would heat up really high just from playing basic games, no matter what paste I used (Gelid, ICD) -
Wanna buy mine? You'll get 4.5 @ usable temps (70s on cpu)...
-
Do you have pictures of your paste spread on CPU? Im really interested if theres a common issue.
-
Did I understand correctly that there is some common rookie mistake? Sorry for my english.
If it is, could you please share what it is?
-
haha for the right price maybe, but I'm looking at waiting for this phoenix model, curious to see the #s Prema and Mr. Fox come out with
I do not have pictures, but I've been pasting CPUs since forever ago, only the ZM would have heat problems to me. I prefer to have the laptop on Autofan instead of 100% blast.ajc9988 likes this. -
The GT80's only real benefit is the mechanical keyboard. The M.2 non-PCI/e slots are pretty pointless compared to 2.5" slots; they won't use PCI/e SSDs, and the SSDs for them are limited to 512GB, unlike mSATA and 2.5". The P870DM is multiple classes above the GT80, especially in the CPU aspect (as the GT80 can't do jack with its CPU).
That's in your environment under your loads =D.
The ZM (like all Clevos) have chances to have warped heatsinks. Sometimes it isn't your pasting job's fault, and that's just that. Hopefully with the feedback thread we've been using, Clevo might improve their heatsinks. Either choosing a new supplier or making the current one ship up.ajc9988 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
Ah I had no idea tbh, about that lol
I was always fascinated how people could keep their devil's canyon temps so low, when all I'd do is play CS:GO, which isn't the most demanding game, and my CPU would be at 98c without even noticing, found it weird. -
Yeah, it's actually a well-known problem around here. Lapping the heatsinks fixes the cooling issue most of the time. @deadsmiley I believe got what, 15c drops in temps from lapping alone? On the other hand, there's been users that lapped and barely saw any reduction at all. It's a bit roulette-y. But if no paste helps much then it probably is the heatsink and not your pasting skillz.

The GT80 series has been out for almost a year and it provides a total of 6 storage solutions 4Xm.2 80mm ssd (600mbs) all (80mm) and 1X2.5 Sata HDD 9mm (300mbs) and 1X2.5 (150mbs) Optical(BDRW or caddy space for HDD).
The New GT80s released in November should contain according to the pre-order configuration options 2xm.2 PCI/e SSDs and 2xm.2 Sata3 SSDs all (80mm) along with the 1X2.5 Sata HDD 9mm (300mbs) and 1X2.5 (150mbs) Optical(BDRW or caddy space for HDD).
The current GT80 CPU works well and the unlocked Skylake due in in the next week should be right on point, if you have any questions about it feel free to ask in the MSI forum otherwise you might get more emotions than opinion in other forms. Regardless you have to pick the storage solution that works best for you, along with other factors such as size, heat, keyboard, feasibility to work on, cooling control, screen size, support and don't forget Cost. Good luck there is allot to choose from today. -
I didn't actually know it had the optical drive, that is indeed a reason to consider it as the P870DM has none.
I'm on a very large wait-and-see deal with those chips. From what I've seen SO FAR, the outlook is very bad. Make no mistake, I am absolutely blunt and may seem extremely harsh most of the time, but I just deal in facts and I'm the first to admit I'm wrong if proven so. If you happen to have a GT72 or GT80 with one of those skylake chips however, feel free to post here and help the information wheel turn. -
Not exactly a rookie mistake, but as D2 Ultima said, there are warped heatsinks in that product line, resulting in a gap between chip and heatsink.
You can find my pictures of the paste spread before/after lapping in the Batman owners lounge. Not gonna say it's common, but I read about multiple ppl with heat issues that might originate from that. -
Same here. But the newer GT80S with 6th Gen. processor is a way to go plus the mechanical keyboard is just awesome, and I can go uniform with an MSI headset and a MSI gaming mouse. Although I'd have to wait more because I want to know the price of a soon to be release GT80S 6QF Titan SLI 29th Anniversary Edition and see how much it would cost for SLI 980 Desktop GPU or just the single one.

Interesting... GSync must be FHD only. QFHD is on the non GSync edition. Or at least that is how it is listed. -
haha in times like these, our own needs and wishes take the back seat! @Happy wife, happy life FTW
yeah, nvidia is still busy licensing the 4K AUO display, should be added to the gsync list at some point in the foreseeable future though

Very busy! Sorry I have been away. Between my day job and my night job testing the monster EUROCOM SKY X9 everything is a blur. Still doing firmware mods with Prema to get everything just right. Many hours of work invested, but it will be worth it.
All of the stock benching is complete and ready for the next phase of the review. Pending are the overclocked benching and teardown video. I wish it was all done. I am living on about 3 to 5 hours sleep each day, LOL. As soon as everything is ready you guys will be tickled with the information.TomJGX, deepfreeze12, Bullrun and 10 others like this. -

I'd never use a 4K screen on a laptop even if you paid me! Things look super tiny. Then if you do DPI scaling to make things look ok, some stuff work and other programs which don't support DPI scaling would hae all misaligned text/buttons.
Max res on a laptop for me is HD -

1440p on the larger models could work nicely I think.

so ure planning to get the phoenix with a 720p screen?

HD screen that means 1080p
-
The 1080p FHD IPS 75Hz G-SYNC display on the EUROCOM SKY X9 is at or near perfection. Looks fantastic and no Windows scaling issues to deal with (common above 2560x1440). This would be my personal preference.
I'm sure the 4K screen is to die for also. Some will want that specifically. And, it will be very useful for some applications (just not the best option for gaming and benching).deepfreeze12, Ashtrix and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

My favorite resolution is 1600x900, not too small, not too big, just perfect. It's like having a 125% DPI scaling on an FHD screen but without the headaches of DPI scaling but they don't sell laptops with this screen resolution anymore

Nice review overall. Their stock benchmark scores are a little lower than they should be. They must have just done the click-and-go testing and not spent any time checking any settings or tuning things up. This machine deserves the time and TLC rather than a basic click-and-go performance analysis.TomJGX, Bullrun, deepfreeze12 and 5 others like this.

What the? Not even that new cooling can keep the cpu under throttle level when running Prime95?
I wonder what are the cpu temps during gaming like Battlefield 4... No point having a beast vga if the cpu will be aroung 90C playing cpu intensive games...Mr. Fox likes this. -
as fox already mentioned, those temps and scores are just with the click and go methodology. EVERY high end desktop cpu throttles at stock clocks, stock voltages and stock paste with stock settings in laptops! that kinda hardware NEEDS sum luv with undervolting, proper repasting, high perf paste, propping up machine, fan speed tuning etc. u cant expect to just switch on the machine and run prime95 on it without having to deal with the consequences. these kinda machines are for tweakers who CARE about their hardware, not just users who want things to just "work" outta the box. for that, we have crapple

Temps are fantastic with the IC Diamond they put on it, and will be much better when I do my teardown video and Liquid Ultra application. EUROCOM SKY X9 has a killer cooling system. Who know what they did in their tests, or what kind of paste it had, how it was applied, etc. Overclocked to 4.5GHz the physics test in 3DMark 11 was like 89°C.
I am compiling the data for my next phase of the review now. Might have it posted tonight.deepfreeze12, ajc9988 and jaybee83 like this. -

Bro, I have read that running wPRIME can harm and permanently damage the CPU. Read this on OC Forums. they say the stress places on the CPI is abnormal and does not represent a real world workflow and recommend other stress tests instead like AIDA64 Extreme.
What do you think of this? I don't feel comfortable running wPRIME ever again after reading that. -
Nah... hasn't hurt my M18xR1, M18xR2, Alienware 18 or Panther 5. Shouldn't hurt the SKY X9 either. Now, Prime95 left to run for hours... yeah, that's just asinine stuff. Anything that is a "burn-in" test for PC is kind of retarded in my opinion. wPrime is fine. If you have a BGA wuss-book, might not be the best thing for it, but probably won't hurt them either.
Hoping to have the stock benching posted tonight. Feel free to comment on these and vote them up to balance out the troll laptop haters.
