Thanks
But you should put more options for graphics. Same as you put up the different processor options. And you forgot put up that this beautiful socket beast also support Optane. This new tech ain’t much used in laptops yet, but this model can handle it!!

Welcome back 6+ cores to DTR industry since the P570WM, I was waiting and asking for that for almost 3 years. I have to go to check the prices.
Nice review @Phoenix, are you coming back to Clevo or you will stay with MSI team?
Agree with you @Papusan , even any small specs for this beast should be clear, many of us care about all details. -

We are planning to offer upgrade kits so you can upgrade your P870DM2/DM3/KM1 model to P870TM1. We will be offering 780W AC Adapter standard with our Sky X9C. Check some of Sky X9C images....

Great news, I think many will think about the upgrade specially if the price is reasonable. Can you provide some pictures from inside, I'll appreciate if you can give us all details about the new cooling system design.Jon Webb, Stress Tech and Papusan like this.

We need pictures of the Cpu heatsink with the second fan for second cpu HS grills. And of the chassis where the second Cpu HS grills is fitted. All the other pictures ain’t of big interest.Jon Webb, Stress Tech and ole!!! like this.

Did you plan to offer upgrade also for Tornado F5?

Will this option also be available for customers in different continents that happen to have a KM1 (that has been bought over here), or will it just be available to peeps that purchased the KM1 through you?
CheersDr. AMK, Jon Webb and Stress Tech like this. -
clevo got back to me this morning with this, really hope they misunderstood me and theres a 4th fan LOL. well even with 3 fans its not like adding a 4th is impossible just a lot of work and having to find a fan that fits. just like @bloodhawk said, a skip. extra set of cpu radiator is just to increase the capacity but with 0 dissipation.

if they have 2 GPU with vaper heatsink, then they will need to replace mobo, CPU, cpu heatsink and new GPU vaper heatsink to get everything going thats probably close to $1k dependent on the pricing.
if they got just 1 GPU or 2 GPU with old heatsink (1 per GPU) then only need to swap out mobo CPU and cpu heatsink assuming they dont want the vaper gpu heatsink in 870TM.
imo upgrade is still worth it much more than buying a brand new laptop.
looks like clevo will continue using similar heatsink and chassis when intel goes 8 cores mainstream, almost guaranteed F7 will likley be a better choice by then. RAM and SSD cost 2-3x as they should be anyway, along with 1080 is kinda old for 2yrs now, waiting for next laptop might not be a bad idea.Dr. AMK, Stress Tech and bloodhawk like this. -
I am still interested in seeing this mythical F7. 8-Cores + SLI 1180s in an MSI. They just need a better touchpad/buttons on their F5. Also I didn't like MSI's software on the F5 but I think their software for the mainstream BGA systems is better? I don't recall getting it to work on my friend's F5, but idk.ole!!! likes this.

If the tech skills is equal as Dellienware phone tech support, I will not expected otherwise answer on your Q.
One thing for sure, bruh... Forget proper Cpu overclocking if you go for a new Msi Barbones F7. Totally forget it!!! Read the Msi Barbones thread and you clearly can see what I mean.Ashtrix, Dr. AMK and Stress Tech like this. -
there is a possibility its like that, however i emailed directly to clevo taiwan dont think they would outsource the customer service from that point on.
for the F7 vs clevo topic, theres both pros/cons. pros being clevo has a better bios but with a limited heatsink paired with 8 core it won't really matter tbh. F7 on the other hand we know nothing about, i am more interested in the internal design first then bios come afterwards. without seeing the F7 my imagination is running wild with all those heatsink/hardware pr0n.Dr. AMK, Stress Tech and Papusan like this. -
With world class HS, doesn’t matter if the machine has hardware limitations (I don’t talk about on firmware level). Can’t be fixed with whatever bios modder you prefer push on it!! Crippled from the birth. Sorry, but I don’t think the engineers will make it otherwise than the Msi F5 Barbones. Hope for the best, but will most likely end as a nightmare for Overclocker’s. Don’t have too big hopes. Msi has never made a high performance laptop. Probably not this time either.Last edited: Oct 18, 2017

a cheap way for them to save money is, make the F7 barebone with same interior as F5 but just bigger display, such as is the same as delliware, if that happens i'll be damnedPapusan likes this.

Truth.
Can't exceed 91W power limit. Only way is to change the negative IMON slope offset to make the CPU report lower power draw. -

Come on now, we have a lot of DM3/DM1 owners as well who complained about severe heating issues. Even at stock ..
BGA vs. LGA is a totally different thing and the hate is justified. But every brand has its issues.
One thing i do like about Dell is that they make the whole return/RMA process much easier and are at least willing to/are working on improving things. We dont know jackshit about what Clevo are doing. If it weren't for resellers like HIDEvolution, things would be down in the dumpster.Last edited: Oct 18, 2017 -

Yeah, I know about heat problems/Qc problems with Clevo's as well, but nothing beats what you can find in 2015+ Alienware 13 / 15 / 17 sub threads

Also does this upgrade include the new heatsinks and other bells and whistle that come with the original P870TM1?Dr. AMK, _deadbydawn_ and Jon Webb like this. -
if they only sticked to ultra high end enthusiast machines.. AW18 was the last one was acceptable imho, they always seem to have the highest end but nowadays theres asus, msi and acer's giant laptop, alienware is like in near low tier.Dr. AMK likes this.

All said and done I'd expect it would cost about that if you factor in selling your old 7700k which would be pretty easy. You might also have some luck selling the old MB which would help too.
I forget how involved it is to get it into a DM1.. I think it was mainly the USB ports.. but I'm sure some of our residents here could do it without too much trouble.ole!!!, Stress Tech and Dr. AMK like this. -

Not to sure about small run, but higher end parts will always cost more. And in this case...They are not working it out like MSI and taking in trade in's....
Now that would cut the price down somewhat.Dr. AMK, Donald@Paladin44 and ssj92 like this. -

MSI are doing trade ins because they promised future compatibility.
It's a lot smaller run that the desktop Z370 boards too.Dr. AMK and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
That reference was more of an example than actually being part of the subject. (And at the time I actually talked to MSI personnel about what was promised.)
Z370 is top of the line for laptops, not desktops. So for your comparison to be viable you need to jump up in quality and price for that to actually work.Last edited: Oct 24, 2017TBoneSan, Dr. AMK, Donald@Paladin44 and 3 others like this. -
And, "high end" is subjective for laptops. While you would never know it from the arm and leg charged for it, a "high end" laptop configuration isn't usually very impressive in the world of enthusiast desktops. And, with voltage and power, and configuration limitations, a laptop Z170, Z270 or Z370 motherboard isn't really high end compared to the desktop equivalent of these mainstream gamer chipsets. It's only high end among laptops when compared to the lame alternatives in the lesser laptops.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There are a few things to consider.
A) Desktop boards following standard form factors have engineering support from Intel.
B) Notebook motherboards require extra features on the board (higher power GPU slot power delivery for example)
C) Form factor requirements are far more stringent. Less space than an ITX board with the features and ports of a uATX.
D) These parts are custom designed and lower volume parts than the desktop equivalents.Jon Webb, Dr. AMK and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
Understood. You're right. I have been living in that "high end" (super expensive) laptop world for about 12 years now. I was OK with it until recently. At least there was an MXM standard and a simple GPU swap to make an older system run as well as a new one was pretty easy. But, now even that is gone. And, I don't believe the proprietary approach to building notebooks is going to stop getting worse.
That being said, they could stop trying to one-up each other for a few minutes, work together on a common goal, and have at least some degree of standardization based on chassis sizes, including motherboard form factors. That is, if they wanted to. USB, Thunderbolt, HDMI, etc. are examples of what smart people can do when they want to agree on a standard. They could do the same in many aspects of laptop manufacturing based on chassis size and price/performance tiers. But, the problem is that they don't want to; not because they cannot.
Hell, just look at the circus with MSI and Clevo and the hodge-podge of morphodite form factors for their current GPUs. These clowns cannot even develop an internal standard, LOL. Some of it (referring to A through D) is unavoidable and some concessions have to be tolerated with laptops, but they could do a lot better than they are. They also need to knock it off with cancer firmware. They could do all of the right things with standardization and not gimping hardware, but cancer firmware diminishes the most valiant of efforts on the hardware side of things.Last edited: Oct 24, 2017Jon Webb, TBoneSan, electrosoft and 9 others like this. -
@Mr. Fox
When you say the GPU mxm standard is gone, could you elaborate on that in layman’s terms? I just bought a new Clevo 870TM. As someone who solely games, the cpu will be powerful enough for years. I am more concerned with the GPU. Would it be unreasonable for me to expect to be able to upgrade, somehow, to Volta when it comes out? I was definitely under the impression that was a somewhat sure thing (obviously, we don’t know *for sure*). -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There was such a program a few years back spearheaded by Intel. It was called CBB (Common Building Blocks). Common batteries, AC Adapters, motherboards etc. This was when everything was still socketed.
It was a disaster, and died within about 2 years. The laptop manufacturers just couldn't get a grip on losing their identity.
When they saw the resistance from the laptop manufacturers, Intel even went into the business of engineering and building their own CBB laptop to show everyone "how it was done". I saw it at an Intel Solution Summit (ISS). Talk about a mess! They didn't even have common screws. If I recall correctly, there were 17 different screw sizes. That laptop never went anywhere...and it didn't take long after that for the initiative to die, never to be mentioned again under penalty of 50 lashes. Seriously, it was a sin to even talk about it in the halls of Intel.
I doubt we will ever see it resurrected. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Since Pascal is such a departure from previous GPU’s that without some serious modding, previous generation laptops cannot be upgraded to it. However we typically only see that kind of deviation from the past after several generations. I would therefore have to say it is probable that Volta could have an upgrade path. However a buying decision should never be made based on new technology that has yet to be released. Only after it is released and tested will we ever know what upgrade path might exist.
