Thanks for the replies!
Is it possible for the gpu to output to an external monitor via HDMI at higher resolution than 1080p? I am thinking either 2560x1600 or maybe even 4k?

You are bound to the limits of the igp, intel see the specs from intel to get the full listing.
-
I have mine plugged in to a 2560x1440 IPS monitor and it works just fine in Windows & Linux.
-
Thanks for the reply. Did you have to add 2560x1440 as a custom resolution in Windows & Linux? Also, is the display only running at 30Hz as opposed to 60Hz?

What is the purpose of "Spin Up Device" option in the BIOS in Prema's mod?
It can be found at Advanced/sata configuration/ and gets enabled by default on both of my SSDs. -
Display resolution was recognized automatically in Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint 17 as long as I was not mirroring with my built in laptop screen as it's 1080p. Both OS's auto enabled to 59Hz but I was able to change it to 60Hz manually in the settings. BTW, I believe the HDMI port is 1.4 so it should be able to handle 4K at 30Hz as long as the cable you are using is compatible.dreville likes this.

Out of curiosity, mpalen19, which monitor(s) are you using?

Thanks for a link, but still, why in Prema BIOS it gets enabled by default for SSD drives? Is there some benefit from it? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It wont really do anything to an SSD AFAIK.

Does anyone have any experience disassembling the palm rest? Is it too hard to disassemble? I'm going to buy some silver "carbon fiber" chinese tape and will try to cover it myself. The W230ST service manual doesn't even mention the palm rest unfortunately, so I have no idea how hard it will be.
I asked this already but you apparently didn't see it (or I am blind): is the "tpu skin" for the W230SS in the photo the TPU Nano Silver one or the TPU cheaper one? You just said "tpu". My notebook should arrive in the coming weeks and I wanted to try one of these asap.
I only found this site with it: http://www.abeststore.com/keyboard-cover-details.php/CLEVO W230SS Nano Silver keyboard-cover 10996
Is there any other site that you would recommend?
They apparently ship worldwide so I'm nearly pulling the trigger with them, just waiting for their answer to one of my emails. -

You will make the heatsink have to work harder as normally it draws air through the keyboard so you will reduce airflow by covering the keyboard.

I believe Meaker is correct. It should have no effect whether enabled or disabled for the SSD. It's merely a safety feature for spinning hard drives. NVME should resolve these legacy SATA features in the future though.
-
I considered that perhaps it would increase the temperature in the keyboard region, but I had no idea I should consider it would influence the heat dissipation of the other components.
Also, wouldn't it release air through the keyboard in this case, rather than draw air? Unless you mean that the cooler draws air through the keyboard (rather than the heatsink, I believe the heatsink would make the hot air go up through the keyboard and not down to inside the case). -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It draws air from the bottom and keyboard and releases out through the side.

Hi, I got the tpu 2nd cheapest one from them..
Not so good IMO as its like stiff and not that soft...
The nano sliver ones should be better as what u have postedraphaell666 likes this. -

Just be methodical with the palm rest, it's going to require taking apart pretty much everything IIRC.

The hard part is that it snags on the hdmi port, think it involved some screws on an unusual location (or carefully bending the clip ...). Sorry, can't recall the specific details, but at least it was possible to remove the palm rest and leave the mb in place.

I will still test the Nano Silver keyboard skin and post back if it makes a noticeable difference in the cooling of the notebook or not.
The palm rest disassembly looks harder than I thought, I will consider just adding the "carbon fiber" adhesive on top of it without disassembling anything, will see if I can figure out a way that makes it look ok.
Now I will play the game of waiting for the notebook, the kb skin and the "carbon fiber" adhesive.
Thanks for the tips and warnings guys, I appreciate it. -

Not a problem. The best advise is don't use force on anything and to ask if you get stuck.

Mine was just pasted on top without dismantling it

Alright, this is finally starting to drive me crazy. Is there any way to disable the keyboard backlight on boot? I'm using the latest version of Prema mod, but I can't find anything. I'm on Arch Linux, I dunno if this is handled by the Clevo Control Center or something but it's getting really annoying to change the backlight on every single boot.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's controlled by the keyboard controller which will go to its default settings each boot (the bios does not really interface with it). Once booted the custom settings are written via software.

Anyone know how to get adaptive vsync to work with the 860M GPU? It's listed as supported by nvidia but I cannot seem to find anyone who actually has it working.
http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/adaptive-vsync/supported-gpus -
Maybe its because the Intel HD is physically connected to the LCD and HDMI/VGA connectors. The NVIDIA only "helps" rendering the picture...
This is what they named OPTIMUS.
There are a lot more features missing in optimus like NVIDIA 3D which the chip could normally do. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If it's not there then there is not much you can do AFAIK, my current K3000M supports it but i'm not on an optimus setup.

Is there an ULTIMATE overclocking/overvolting/fan control tool for W2300SS gtx860m?
Currently I have to use 3 tools simultaneously which is not that convenient and more time consuming, which are MSI Afeterburner for harwdare monitoring, EVGA Precision for overclock and overvolt, Clevo stock control panel for setting up the fan to the maximum speed.
Would love to have it all in one tool.

Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
Get rid of MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision, and use NVIDIA Inspector. It is a fork of GPU-Z and is extremely useful in overclocking, as well as simple. Doesn't have a fancy GUI that complicates things. You can also use it to monitor your GPU/memory usage as well as temperatures.
The fan control is built-in; you need not open Control Centre to jack up the fan speed to maximum - use the shortcut Fn+1 to toggle between auto fan and max fan speed.CyberTronics likes this. -

Thanks a lot for the tips! FN+1 is an amazing thing.
Regarding nvidia inspector, it doesn't always apply gpu core voltage, i.e. when I set it to 1.2v and press apply it just drops back to the default value. Any way to fix this? I never observe such behaviour with EVGA tool. -
Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
At the top of the overclocking window, make sure you've selected "Unlock min" and "Unlock max". Then choose "Performance Level P0" from the drop-down menu. Once you're satisfied with your clocks and configuration, at the bottom, right-click on "Create clocks shortcut" and select "Create clock startup task". Then your clocks will be automatically applied once you log in to Windows. -

t456,
Did you install that IGZO 1440p panel yourself or bought the laptop with it arleady prebuilt? -
Prebuilt, would've needed to source both the 4-lane eDP cable and display otherwise. If you're looking to swap; at least one user ought to have fhd > 1440p by now. My lcd cable was damaged and had to order a replacement, got two instead, replaced the damaged one and send the second to LostCoast707.

Has it always done that? What are your temps at, it could be doing it because they are too high. Have you opened up the bottom to clean out any dust from the vents and fans since you've gotten the computer? Its good to do so every 6 months or so. -
Just switch Clevo HotKey App to quiet, power saving or even entertainment mode and it'll be silent.

@Prema, any updates to your Mod that are in the pipeline?
-
not 13"...
Clevo finally fixed the WQHD black screen bug in DOS (after one year)...so at least got a new base to work with. -
Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
Oh dang - that's news. I wouldn't mind even if it were 14" - as long as it's thinner and lighter than the W230 series! -
Oh can you link to that info please?
-
What do you mean by link to that info? It's simply a BIOS update to fix WQHD black screen in DOS issue...
-
i mean it would be nice to get a download link for update - or maybe a changelog too

how did you apply the liquid metal paste? little drop in the middle and spread this to a thin film on CPU+GPU DIE and on the copper heatsink too?
I own the Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra too - but did not give it a try because i never have used this TIM before and am a little scared to apply it in a wrong way...
Most tutorial videos i found refere to Desktop CPUs with big heatspreaders...Last edited: May 18, 2015 -

Has anyone managed to connect an external GPU to this little baby?
Is it even possible with W230SS?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Due to the lack of external PCI-E connectivity (Wifi card slot at 1x is not a good idea....) it wont work too well.
-
CyberTronics Notebook Consultant
Meaker, if I get it correctly, you work in sales. Which laptop with with a possibility to hook up an external GPU would you recommend? 13-15 inch sized. Specs don't really matter, except a good CPU.
P.S. I suppose macs are probably the best because they have thunderbolt, but maybe there is something equally as good on the Windows side?
/Excuse me for a slight off topic -

Clevo/sager are more focused on giving you access to all your gpu power where you are rather than external docks.

Internal PCI to Female USB -- Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter :-D
Thought id share, got this pci to female usb adapter from ebay ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/121168829594?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT) and then the regular wireless adapter and just trimmed down the cord to real short. Space was the hard part, what I ended up doing was removing the foam pads on top and below the SSD. Took me 2 adapters and 3 USB cords lol, but im not great at splicing, and the adapter is cheap as heck(both in money and constuction), I ended up pulling a wire from the soder point on one adapter, right now its taped back on
, if it holds i might just stick with it, but if not I will get another whole new set up and re-do, I wanted this bad, I use my controller as a mouse with Xpadder. plus I use it for games. And it works, im sure people can do a better job, but you get the idea, just wanted to share my work with the internet world! Long live Clevo! I was going to upload pics, but no go
