It could be a part on either the motherboard or drives etc that's expanding as it gets warm and causing a short.
Does it do it on battery and AC?

The cooling on this notebook in general, sucks. -

I've been lurking this forum for awhile and using it to help as I work on my laptop. However, recently with a Windows update I have run into a problem that I can't fix.
Usually I can push [Fn] + [Esc] to run the Hotkey Control Center, but with the update I can no longer do that. Also, when I run the ControlCenter.exe in my Hotkey folder it boots, but freezes if I try to change my system settings from Quiet to Performance or any other setting.
This has happened before with previous Windows 10 Updates. But previously I have run System Restore and it has fixed the issue. Unfortunately this time Windows updated itself twice and I can no longer go back before the update that caused this issue.
Is there some way I can fix this? Or Is there a way to get rid of HkeyTray or the Control Center that would still allow my fan to not constantly run? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Have you tried re-installing it after doing the update? Some updates play with some settings that may be set by the program on install.
-
*UPDATE 2 QUESTION* Now that I got this to work. Is there a newer version of Hotkey I should be running? My fan seems to be running all the time again.
*UPDATE 1 FIXED* After running through all of this I manually deleted files in the Hotkey Folder then reinstalled Hotkey 2.34.48 and upon restart it worked. Thanks for the help!
Yes. When I tried to uninstall the Hotkey 2.34.48 application I received an error "Hotkey 2.34.48 - InstallShield Wizard" "error-5005 : 80070002) has occurred... make sure you have finished previous setup and closed other applications."
After closing everything and removing any running programs and making sure no hotkey program was running and trying to install over previous installation I received the error "Hotkey 2.34.48 - InstallShield Wizard" "Errorr!!"
I got the driver from the Clevo website here:
http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download/ftpOut.asp?Lmodel=W230SS<ype=9&submit=+GO+
The driver information is:
Hotkey AP (2.34.49) for Windows 8.1 64-bit version. Hotkey.zip 2014/9/2
Another note is that when I run control center from the folder location, without the Fn Esc hotkey shortcut, is that I can change the fan, power and other settings. But if I switch to a different profile, like from Quiet to Entertainment, then it freezes.Last edited: Oct 7, 2016 -
Have you tried the W230SD version for win 10? Make sure it installs with administrator rights.

Everything is sooo expensive right now that I'm not actually rushing to sell.

I'm not ready to declare victory quite yet but I think I localized my problem to the battery. To review, the issue is that my computer will randomly restart in the middle of doing anything after 20 mins to 3 hours of use. So far (5 hours) running it off just AC it hasn't restarted. Does it seem more likely that the problem is the battery (fixable with new battery) or something in the internal power system that connects the battery to the motherboard?

Well the outgoing models often can be cheaper. Do remember though the 1060 is the replacement for the 970m and the 1070 replaces the 980M.
-
Anyway before desktop gpu in laptops. I've always wondered this,Why isn't the trend number for number? For example. Wasn't it ever 780 replaced by 880m. And that by 980m? Because from that logic an 870m should be replaced by a 960m. But it's not it replaces 860m? Doesn't it?wouldnt that way be better to measure performance from generation to next because then the boost in increase is not as large as if they did that?

Before desktop GPUs it was 680m - > 780m - > 880m - > 980M.

I made the insert a little too tall so the bezel doesn't sit flush on the bottom any more. The electronics are still going strong however. it's been my daily driver for 2 1/2 years the paint is coming off, two corners are cracked a third is lifting from the chassis and the SD card reader has failed from overuse.
I'm starting to save for a new sager, maybe an 8152, too bad Clevo discontinued the 13" models I love the form factor I can use it almost anywhere and it gets looks when I'm doing some CAD rendering or playing games.
I'd be willing to put the guts into a new case if I could find one but some of the stuff in the lid looks like it's been plastic welded in and I'm not totally sure if the grounding issues I've had with the screen would get worse.t456 likes this. -
Someone help me out. Is there ANY reason why the laptop has EXTREMELY low volume output even on max volume? Using win 10 and the audio drivers for 10 come up as windows 8.1. (Windows auto updates it to that and I've manually downloaded from the site, same thing). And upon start up tells me it's not 64bit version or something like that.
What gives? Never really bothered about it cos I would just play external screen with audio as normal. But last night going through some videos in YouTube and some just could not hear anything. But when the volume is good at its best. It's like 50% loudness as other laptops.
I need to sell this soon and need to know if this is normal in case I get asked or told it's a fault when it's not.
Thanks

You do need to ensure if running 64bit windows you are downloading the 64bit drivers.

@Prema - I believe you're the only person who can help.
My notebook fails to store BIOS settings whenever I unplug it from the AC adapter and shut it down from the battery. What's wrong? There was one incident yesterday evening when I was running Witcher 3, and my notebook suddenly froze, and there was a super-loud buzzing sound coming from my earpieces. I had to force-shutdown, and my XTU profile had disappeared... I want to fix this, what's wrong? -

You can also check it's seated properly. If you have a multimeter you can measure the voltage and see if it's good.

Is there any word on whether or not Clevo will bring back the 13.3" form factor? I love the size of these computers

Hello guys - quick question - new to this laptop.
Running i7-4710MQ - when I unplug the mains - it goes down to 1.48Ghz (throttled). Had a W740SU before so familiar to cpu down-clocking on battery. Though, Is there a way around this? (I installed something earlier - and it went upto the proper frequency on battery - though I can't remember what it was / be it an update / driver - reinstalled Win10 and it's now back to 1.48Ghz max on battery.).
Thanks. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You would need a modified BIOS to get around this protection.

Fixed mine with the nuts+bolts method. Used six of these M4x6mm flanged bolts on the inside of the bezel and six nuts on the outside. This way they fit within the space of the lid, without the bezel bulging outwards and didn't require cropping the bolts, unlike the earlier 10mm hex bolts I'd used.
Intend to hang on to this thing for a while; dropped in a 4930MX (have a 12V fan and 120W adapter) and will swap in a 13-14" OLED panel once they're obtainable and affordable(-ish). That should keep it current for a few years, skipping over the current gens at least, until something comes along that would be a real upgrade.Ionising_Radiation likes this. -
What does it look like when you remove the bezel?
Place something sturdy behind the laptop and open the lid, letting it rest against the heavy object. The bezel simply unclips from the display lid, no screws anywhere. Looking at your picture it does seem to be the 'normal', run-of-the-mill hinge issue, at least. -
If anyone is looking for one of these machines, I have one for sale here:

Just looked at tracking - it was delivered this morning. -
The 4930MX is good enough for me ** and so is 1GB/s read+write ( RAID in a 13.3" !!!). Only thing left is swapping RAM to 2x16GB and adding the oled panel. All that being done there's not very much appeal in any of the newer, compact systems. Only thing would be a better gpu, but don't game on this thing anyway, only some 3D/CAD stuff. When there's a ~14"-ish with socketed cpu and gpu (we can wish!) then it'd be time to consider moving to a new model.
So is my Latitude D800 from 2004. There's a reason for keeping that thing, too; it might very well hold the world record in (laptop) screen overclocking (@185Hz).
Hmm ... some people are very sensitive to eye-strain and that lcd is an absolutely perfect remedy for that. It's a high-refresh ccfl, very uniform, has a good gamut, 16:10 aspect ratio and there's the overlocking, too. Display a static image and you'd hardly notice it was on, very much like an e-reader. Buy the panel plus an adapter and you can build your own, strain-free monitor for ~$75 and make it a gift for the friend or family member for whom it'd be just the thing.Really, this is pretty sad: 57W 3.5y old vs. 91W today.Ionising_Radiation and Prema like this. -

It's really a pity that the 1060 wasn't fitted in the P640... Would've been a nice budget competitor to the glitzy GS43VR, AW13 or Aorus X3 v7.Prema likes this.
