The Area 51m is still ridiculously overpriced even with the discounts. A similarly specced X170 is still significantly cheaper and more versatile, not to mention better in every way.
Also is the 1080p panel on zTecpc's X170 a 144 Hz panel?
-
It should be. That’s what @Donald@zTecpc told me anyway. HIDevolution is the only reseller I’ve seen with the higher than 144 refresh screens.Clamibot likes this.

Thanks. One more question, is there any point in delidding the new CPUs? I thought Intel went back to using solder between the CPU and IHS.

Only downside would be raytracing performance? I fix it for you
Performance equal 2 years old EOL desktops cards would be a damn
awful upgrade

They are but it’s not the best quality. Liquid metal definitely helps. And out of the box stock this laptop throttles hard with the 10900K. And the 9900K really brought the area 51m to its knees last year. So the 10700k would probably still be toasty in one of these stock. So if you don’t want a hot cpu in one of these laptops it’s a good idea. I’d definitely go for it.Clamibot likes this.

Hi there. I got mine from Eluktronics and it has a 240hz panel. It was way cheaper as well. I got a 10900k and 2080 Super without RAM, a hard drive, or OS and it was $2,729. With tax and shipping, it was under 3k at $2,955. It came on Tuesday and I can't even believe what I have. I am coming from a MSI GS63 VR Stealth, so to say the least it is a MONSTER compared to it. I am looking for some sort of laptop sleeve to put it in and I can't find one. I may have to use a pillow case or something!!!

It appears the links are not working and the product is not viewable on the web site right now. It may be the server is down or something, so I will check tomorrow. Perhaps @Donald@zTecpc can clarify.

I have been noticing consistently that the throttle temperature for CPU for some reason seems to be 87 degrees celcius in x170sm-g. Anyone got around it so far? A good healthy 10900K should NOT thermal throttle at this temperature!
-
A few places in Europe are doing the same, they are actually skipping the 240hz and going straight to 300hz. PC Specialist, XMG and laptopparts4less.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't. Dell may pay them to censor the truth so people who aren't as familiar with botique system builders or who aren't familiar with the DTR space don't buy an objectively superior product. Knowledge is power guys and gals.Papusan likes this.

So basically, every time you use the pc it thermal throttles?
Jokes aside, did you do something with CCC, xtu or throttlestop? Doubt you did anything with the bios, locked as it is
-
I believe its a bios thing.

Seems like I am a yes man today. Can't have that. I guess now I'd better go looking for a bunch of posts to say no to. It shouldn't be too difficult in a notebook community to find plenty of things to say no to, LOL.
I really hope there is an opportunity for Eluktronics to become a PremaMod Partner. That would be fantastic. Then we would have good coverage on both sides of the country and nice competition on base model configuration and pricing. Those that aspire to provide something superior will rise to that level and charge more for the superiority of what they sell. Those that want to roll their own monster can buy where the price is lowest, as long as the key ingredient (PremaMod) is there.
Without the Prema BIOS there is no path to true greatness for any laptop. The OEMs/ODMs are obsessed with selling broken trash, whether that trash is BGA or modular. It's all trash from the factory. It is pretty amazing that every laptop built by virtually all companies is ruined by ****ty firmware. This is the world we live in. It's disgusting, but the reality is disgusting.
Insyde BIOS is the worst. It sucks that Clevo chose to go with Insyde for the X170 just so it could have a mouse cursor showing in the firmware. I am impressed by what Prema was able to accomplish with it, but it would have been a better product had they stuck with AMI firmware.Last edited: Nov 22, 2020 -
I think it's some minor problems they try to fix on their website. I know @Donald@zTecpc work on it.

Atleast this one was up long enough to give me a ball park on how much it would cost. I’m pretty excited. Those ram memory speeds though are all over the place? Besides doing some initial overclocking and benching I’m gonna just be gaming on this sucker. So I’ll probably just slap my vengeance 32gb 2666mhz kit in there and call it a day.

There is a lot of effort and testing to get a project like this together. I have CCC installed primarily for fan control. I'm still in the process of finding out good alternatives (if any) so that I can get rid of it completely. Apparently as long as CCC isn't running, the blue backlit keyboard doesn't go away which is annoying as heck.
Do you have a link where one can buy prema bios for this model? -
Np. I enjoyed your recent delid video.
BTW, could you elaborate on the details of your improved thermal mod? New screws, washers, and what else? Or will there be a video on your channel soon? -
The Prema BIOS is not for sale. I sincerely wish that everyone had access to it, but right now the only way to get it is to purchase a system from a Partner Shop. The mod has unique features that are customized for each PremaMod Partner Shop and at this point in time, I don't even know if it has been distributed to them yet. I am fairly confident that if it has been that there has not been an opportunity for their customers to have it remotely flashed on the systems already purchased.
For fan and LED controls I am using the Obsidian tools. I mentioned them earlier in the thread. They are working well for me. See quotes below.
@S.K - Please make special note of this.
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed that video.
The mods I did were for Donald and I will not be sharing them publicly because they make the zTecpc X170 a unique product. It would defeat the purpose for which I did them and there would be nothing to stop zTecpc competitors from copying them and unjustly reaping the fruit of my efforts. That would be especially bad considering they haven't even had an opportunity to sell their first one yet. I suppose the people that purchase one would be at liberty to do that. I would hope not, at least not for a little while.
When the mods are eventually leaked, it will be evident that part of what I did was correct a couple of design defects. If and when that occurs, everyone that owns one will benefit from the many hours of labor I spent looking for ways to transform the X170 into something special. I actually hated it when I started and found it appalling. I began with what I believe to have been worse than a normal specimen. Now I actually love it and think it is an amazing product.DreDre, Rogue Dragon and Papusan like this. -
I didn't like those so I decided to get to work and now my hacked version of CCC allows my CPU to run all the way up to 100 degrees celcius with no problems. Significant increase in overall performance as well. What I did was, I logged into my linux installation, manually force-deleted everything related to Intel XTU including a ghost instance that was installed in the background quietly by the CCC. I then removed all XTU linked drivers and driver files (both executables as well as .dll files) followed by a detailed manual registry cleanup. I then removed all the software devices crap installed for my CPU cores by the Intel XTU instance and now I am completely happy with the results. It feels like a very heavy process running in the background deliberately choking the CPU has been removed and the machine seems to be much snappier. I will try and create a guide for it (in case somebody wants to know). Here's a screenshot while running cinebench r20 at stock clocks and 70mV undervolt on core with 65mV undervolt on cache using throttlestop.

Awesome. Yeah, that would be super helpful if you made a guide for that. Nice job!
I really loathe CCC, but it sounds like what you have done to it makes it very tolerable. -
What kind of Cinebench R20 score are you getting?

totally understandable. I do wish the fruits of your labor to be as sweet as possible.

Obsidian control station also downloads XTU files, but, at least it let's you choose whether you want the services activated or notMr. Fox likes this.

Small report on my experiences with obsidian apps, besides the must-be exercised caution with the driver downloads:
- the keyboard LED setup has to be opened up manually to get the clevo led app working after shutdowns, I dare say this is mostly clevo app's fault,
- the fan control app ( unless I missed or screwed up with something ) messes up with the anti-dust function of the stock auto mode,
- the control station's device control doesn't always work with touchpad for instance, which also disabled the function key to disable said touchpad, but this can again be my fault on messing up with something.
As far as everything else goes, it's still leaps and bounds better suited than CCC and very glad to have supported the dev, considering that apparently spending close to 3 grands for a laptop isn't enough to grant you a decent and functioning dedicated software.Mr. Fox likes this. -

There seems to be some misconception about missing support for RAM with Extreme Memory Profiles (XMP) on this model. If you own XMP memory simply do this:
- enable overclocking option in BIOS
- Install Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU), select the XMP profile in the memory section and hit the apply button.
The system will reboot and try to train and apply the selected profile and if it is successful it'll keep using it even if you uninstall XTU.
Unless you have some unsupported or unstable RAM there should be no problem.
ENJOY!
