Finally recieved mine and am quite happy. I'm having only one problem. The USB 3.0 drivers are not installing, says the device is not there. Anyone have any ideas? would appreciate the help.
-
What OS are you running? You could try to download the drivers directly from the Sager website Software Upgrade
try those and see what happens.
Also, have you loaded any of the drivers prior to the USB 3.0 drivers? Chipset drivers or the Intel Management Engine might have a part in the USB drivers too. -
Windows 7 and all other relevant drivers have been installed off the disk
-

Are you sure you didn't miss any drivers? A lot of people miss the "optional drivers" section on the install disk. I'd also recommend getting the most current drivers from this thread, rather than the install disk:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/573379-clevo-driver-thread.html -
the ones on the disk didnt work but one ofthe ones from the site did so all is good now. Speakers are quite quiet though. Thanks for the help, will have to look at updating my other drivers as well now.

To get better volume go to Control Panel>Sound, then double click on Speakers. Click the Enhancements tab and then make sure Loudness and/or Loudness Equalizer is checked.

think ive got most stuff sorted out now and I am very happy with this machine. The one last thing thats slightly dissapointing is that the power brick really is just that a brick. Its huge and weighs almost as much as the laptop. Its not a deal breaker by any means but I think I will have to find a more portable replacement. Anyone have any suggestions?
I know the stock one is 120W but it seems coolermaster's 120 model isnt for sale anywhere. Any chance the SNA95 Ultra Slim 95W 19V might work? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
A 95W will underpower your Sager NP5165 and is not advisable. You will find it would let it boot up, but you will find the video card will not be stable when using it.
-
which defeats most of the point of having it. Any recommendations for a 120 until the coolermaster is actually available?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
You mean recommendations for a smaller AC Adapter?
Unfortunately physics being what they are, laptop AC Adapters are larger than we might like, but they are what they are for the most part. Maybe do a few pushups every morning and it won't seem so overwhelming
-
More the fact that it doesnt fit as well in my bag with my textbooks. And every little bit does not help when your textbooks weigh as much as mine do.
-
here is a smaller brick i purchased from ebay, works great. i leave one in living room and one in bedroom. laptop has no problems with it running any games or any power intensive tasks.
the replacement brick is a little bit narrower yet provides same exact power flow and only costed me $13 delivered. -
I ended up just getting the USNA95 from coolermaster as the 120 is not available in north america at all.
And to be honest I'm satisfied, it does not power the graphics alone but it charges it. And as long as I dont plan on any graphics intensive things it powers the laptop without the battery. And its so tiny and light compared to the stock one, well worth the 60 I payed for it. I also expect it will give me extended playtime from a full battery.
And if I do go on a longer trip or plan on going to do some more intensive activities with it I can always pack the "brick" -
Looking to pick up a 5165 with the i5 configuration. How bad is the overheating? I'm on an extremely tight budget and would prefer to avoid the IC Diamond add-on if it is not necessary. I'm getting mixed reports about the overheating issues depending on the source..
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
IC Diamond would only make maybe 1~2 degrees Celsius difference on the Sager NP5165 so it is not worth spending the money.
The best thing you can do to keep it running as cool as possible is to keep it clean. Use compressed air to blow out the vents and from time to time open the bottom panel and blow it out...but always hold the can upright and tilt the computer if necessary. If you tilt the compressed air can it will squirt liquid which you definitely don't want
-
Thanks. I'll hold back on the IC Diamond then.
This laptop sounds perfect for my needs right now except the overheating issues that I'm hearing from both the 5160/5165 worry me a bit.
Can anyone with the i5 model chime in? Do you have to turn off turbo boost in order to keep the temps manageable? -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
You shouldn't ever need to turn off turbo boost. The CPU automatically runs at the best speeds for any particular load and number of threads. On battery, it downclocks fairly heavily. -
hmmm im quite certain i read somewhere that people were running their processors at 99% to avoid turbo boost because their computer was generating too much heat...

The overheating is generally caused by heavy gaming. The NP5165 chassis isnt designed for it, its made to be more of a mobility/productivity notebook with moderate gaming. High end gaming is what the NP81XX models are for. -
What qualifies as heavy gaming? The np5165 seems to fit my price point well as I'm not looking for a highly powered gaming machine but would like to be able to run modern games. My real concern is the heat that the machine generates and whether it will degrade the components over time and shorten the life span of the machine. I don't mind the heat but I'd like the machine to last me several years.
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Heavy gaming is hard to really put a thumb on. Several hours on Battlefield 3 I'd say would qualify vs logging on to WoW or SWTOR to do a few quests.
You'll be able to run modern games but not at max settings. If you plan on long periods of play do expect to generate more heat then you expect as others have mentioned.
If the NP5165 first your price point and the needs you're looking for then dont hesitate to purchase it.
I guess a good analogy for it would be to compare it to some cars that redline at 5k rpm while others get to up to 8k before redline. You run that at 5k car there too long you'll have heat issues while the 8k car ran at 5k will just cruise along. They are made differently to handle different stress's -
With the upcoming refresh from Intel and nvidia, does anyone think it's worth the wait if I'm looking at the 5165? I'm getting the sense that ivy bridge wont be a huge jump from sandy bridge and the 635m looks like a sinple rebadge of the 555m. Can anyone chime in?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk -
Depends on how long you want to wait and what your budget is. When the ivy bridge platform and nVidia's 28nm refresh arrive, the cost will be much higher, and the performance wont be a substantial jump.
After a couple months the costs will begin to drop. Manufacturers do this to grab the enthusiast market that must have the best. (The same type of people that buy a new iPhone simply because it has a useless dual core.) Other reasons include RnD cost recovery; and manufacturers like Global Foundries need to get the supply out; and they want to get rid of all the last generation.
If you need a new computer now, don't wait. Otherwise you might be disappointed when it comes out and 3 months later its cost is lowered by 15-20% -
curious if anyone has updated the bios to the latest v109 that I've seen on some ftp sites and what updates it has.
-
this is my bios version:
Manufacturer : American Megatrends Inc.
Version : 4.6.4
Date : 09/01/2011 (mm/dd/yyyy)
what is version 109? -
interesting, mine is older than yours. Mine is:
American Megatrends
4.6.4
4/08/2011
Not sure what version exactly v109 is, that's the name on the file.
This is where I see the file:

Hi guys, has anyone been able to confirm which exact model of gt 555m is in the P5165 / W150HRQ, and which model of the gt 555m is the best one to have?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The Sager NP5165 has the ...NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M GPU with 2GB GDDR3.
-
This model is the 3rd of the versions (in order of performance)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M - Notebookcheck.net Tech -
Well fiddlesticks.
-
I got my hands on a copy of EC02.
EC03 is noisy as hell and disables Fn+1 fan control.
Anyone want it? It only works if you burn it to a CD. I'm trying my hardest to extract the EC bin so you can put it on a DOS USB, but no luck so far. -
Well I'm joining the club here, just ordered the below from rjtech.com
Went with the i3 over the i5 to save a little money, and because the turbo boost of the i5 really doesn't matter for what I will use this computer for. All I wanted was a good laptop to browse the web, watch movies, and to be able to play Starcraft 2, WoW or older games from Steam and gog.com when the mood strikes. I mainly game on the 360, but I wanted the option for light gaming when I wanted. Also opted to not get RAM or a hard drive because I have Crucial PC3-10600 2x4GB kit and a 320gb 7200rpm drive from a project that didn't pan out sitting around. What I was really after was the screen, I can wait to see that resolution! -
Hey guys, i was really considering the NP5160 for school use and such, but the 5.7 pounds is a bit on the heavy side.
I'm also worried about the chargers being as big as they are....
I really want a sager, but the weight is freaking me out a bit. For those of you who have them, what would you suggest? -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
It's an unfortunate trade-off that has to be made with laptops. Either you can have a gaming laptop (which will be larger and heavier, but powerful) or a portable laptop (which will generally lack the power). That said, you'll get decent performance out of this machine and it's not prohibitively heavy either. I carry the P150HM (the same size and weight for the most part) with a much larger power brick. It's no worse than a large college textbook would be in terms of weight.
I'd say put a big book in your bag that's roughly the same weight and see if that weight is going to bother you in the long run. If you're using a backpack or rolling bag versus a messenger bag, you may not even notice it. Even the lightest laptops are still going to be 2-3lbs plus charger. -
The np5160 brick is not very heavy (less than a lb. if I had to guess). My wife has the model an its a small brick compare to my.
-
Another question...does the np5165 have 2 fans or one?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It has one fan.
-
dont want to be a nag, but i have one last question. i noticed that the graphics card this comes with has optimus. does the computer have a built in video card as well, aside from the dedicated one?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Yes, without one there would be no Optimus.
-
Yeah, only the Sager notebooks using the GT line of cards support Optimus, switching between the GT and the Intel HD 3000.
-
so then, i assume it is the processor that gobbles up all the battery life?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Actually no, the processor only uses about 10% of the power. The biggest user of the battery power is the LCD itself at about 45% of the total...so turn your brightness down as much as possible so that it is still comfortable to read and you will save the most significant amount of battery life.
-
WiFi and Bluetooth both draw a lot from the battery, so be sure to have them turned off if you are not using them to increase your battery life.

Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
You will get better performance using 2 SODIMM vs 1, that way the RAM is running dual channel -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
Running 2x4GB is better as it will be dual channel and is the recommended configuration. However, if you wanted to go with 8GB sticks you could always do 2x8GB or do 1x 8GB and 1x4GB (the latter option isn't the best, but both slots are populated which is preferred over an empty slot) -
i want to buy corsair 1866mhz 2x4GB kit for my sager np5165
my processor core i7 2720, my friends told me its impossible to use 2x4gb @1866 mhz with my processor, now i;m confuse bout to upgrade it., U_U
help me pls.. guide me to upgrade my RAM to 1866mhz with 2x4gb
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
2x 4GB 1866Mhz will work as Sager offers it as an option to order that way. There are two types of memory available JEDEC and Intel XMP, get the JEDEC for your Sager and it should have no problem. -
I recommend the hyperx pnp by kingston, produced 1866mhz with no hassle/extra setup.
-
sorry, hyperx pnp series ? 2x4gb @1866mhz thats u mean ?? is it better than the corsair ? whats the different ?
i dont understand bout JEDEC and Intel XMP xplain please,,
but intel said that i7 2720 only supported 1600mhz
still confused what type n merk of RAM i should buy for my sager np5165
