Becuase I didn't feel the necessary upgrade. I have the Plextor M3S in my desktop which is one top performer also.

Me and Abidderman were actually referring to trvlbug to get a faster OS SSD and replace the ODD with a fast HDD. I was simply agreeing to what Abidderman suggested and that is directed to trvlbug. He is just buying a new SSD, so he might as well get the fastest SSD. I am not talking for myself regarding this. Yes? :)

lol, nice one :p gotcha :)

reading reviews on the M500, those prices are indeed tempting!

especially considering all those enterprise extras they put in there: hardware encryption, automated temperature throttling, extra capacitors against data loss in case of a power outage, etc.

not to mention that sddreview.com puts the M500 right between the OCZ Vector and the Samsung 840 Pro, basically making it the no. 2 top performing SSD.... almost sounds too good to be true :D

just checked the prices here in germany: about 330€ for the 480GB one and 533€ for the 960GB model :) but i expect those prices to drop significantly once general availability is ensured

Please read the conclusion part of the review you posted: AnandTech | The Crucial/Micron M500 Review (960GB, 480GB, 240GB, 120GB)

    It clearly says:

The M500's performance is by no means bad, but it's definitely slower than the competition. Crucial targeted Samsung's SSD 840, but in most cases the TLC based 840 is faster than the M500. There's probably some room for improvement in the M500's firmware, but there's no escaping the fact that read, program and erase latencies are all higher as a result of the move to larger pages/blocks with the drive's 128Gbit NAND die. The benefit to all of this should be cost, but we'll have to wait and see just how competitive the smaller capacities of the M500 are on cost.

Yup I actually cancelled my m500 order and got the 840 instead. The biggest advantage of the m500 seems to be stable performance on a nearly full drive.
If you are looking for a 1tb ssd there is no competition. But for 500 gb and below their price atm seems a little steep.

lol ok, that was some 180 degree turn :) funny how different sites come to such different conclusions @ssdreview vs. anandtech. the former actually achieved their highest pcmark storage results ever with the m500 960gb, clearly outperforming the 840 pro and the vector.

Lol it was, but even the manufacturer given specs of the m500 is lower than the 840 in reads at least.
Imho the m500 should be at least the same price as the 840 which I believe it will be in a months time but I need to get my ssd now.

    Hey folks,

After shutting down my laptop normally with no kinks one day, I try to turn it on and get a blank, black screen. Keyboard input works as FN+1 still pushes fans to max, but capslock, numlock etc. doesn't change the LEDs. HDD shows activity through the HDD LED.

I didn't open it at all before this happened. But its the same as the first post here.

My monitor has always had e colors for a 95% gamut screen, so I'm thinking the monitor cable just went off now. How do I access it through the metal top mobo cover?

Could you try an external monitor through hdmi or dvi? The laptop should mirror by defaul, at least through the boot process. We can rule out display if nothing shows on external as well.

The M500 is nice, but I would probably be more in favour of adding a second vector, 1TB is PLENTY for me.

I still have 300GB free so it's not an essential for me either :p

Hopefully the 500 M500 can shrink to a nice point to since it still offers the full performance.

*dreading* What GPU do you have installed?

The 6970m and 6990m are notorious for dying randomly and those are the symptoms you might see.

If the external monitor does not work, I believe it is a dead GPU.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've done so with no result.

    I'm using a 7970M.

As I said, I'm getting the exact same situation as the first post on this page in this link. Except, instead of it happening after cleaning, it happened after a normal shutdown with no kinks. GPU didn't show signs of dying before hand, temps only ever went up to 80c at most. GPU fans still respond to FN+1 with the blank screen, HDD LED shows activity. Checked RAM connections below and made sure the HDD was secure. Still have to open up the keyboard to check the RAM there though.

I'm seriously hoping it's a different part that's wonky, because I've already just replaced my HD6990M which totally crapped itself out from a crappy paste job and overall build quality from the local, now-defunct reseller.

Have you tried re-seating the 7970m? Honestly, if that doesn't do it, I'm betting it's the culprit unless something else came loose like an LCD cable.

I know that sounds ridiculous but that's exactly how I've had video cards die on me. Literally playing WoW and other games for hours, for months. Shut it down, went to a bar for a few hours, come back and no picture. Just a blank screen that's backlit.

Edit: I would expect the fans and HDD to still work normal. You might even hear Windows booting. It means that it only a GPU issue and not a motherboard issue.

Hi, i am having exactly the same problem. Been three days that i have started working on solving it, i have ran all diagnostics on earth, restored the system, full-formatted and reinstalled Win 7, tried different versions of CCC, but nothing. My BIOS is up-to-date, but i am looking now at possibly flashing my vBIOS (i must admit i am no expert, so i am a bit nervous about this one). This BSOD problem with clevo 150hm is much bigger than i thought, i have found lots of people with the same problem !

I have now found a new possible solution:
    http://http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/384026-33-6970m-graphics-driver-problem
6870 Drivers Installed, Black screen after Reboot , need help please!! - Radeon - Graphics & Displays

crossing my fingers, i will try this one. Please leave a note if you find a way out of this.

Unfortunately our problems are different, although I used to have that problem with my HD 6990M - damn thing burned out because Sager and the reseller gave me one that was badly pasted, and poorly assembled it seems.

My laptop simply turns on with no display at all.

I've just managed to get a really stubborn, glued up screw on the keyboard and have access on the top mobo. Transferred one of the RAM sticks to the back so only one is left in front. Can't access the monitor cable to check it. Will attach a photo to confirm if this is it.

And I would reseat my HD 7970M, but I don't have any paste on hand to repaste it if ever. :/

So my machine can't seem to play a game anymore. Every game I open (ie Dead Space 3, Battlefield 3, Dead Island: Riptide) lags horrendously to the point where it's difficult to even exit the game. Even on low settings. Battlefield 3 used to run fine on high settings. I've played games like Max Payne 3 and Dishonored on high and beaten them without problems, but now they hardly run.
Sometimes the game will run fine for a few minutes before lagging and sometimes it will lag right from the start. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling video drivers to no avail and I'm really puzzled as to why this is happening.
I have the Geforce GTX 560m variant of the P150HM.
    Any ideas?

what are ur system temps like? especially the ones of ur gpu and cpu? could it be one of them is overheating and thus throttling? when was the last time uve cleaned ur vents and heatsink fins fron accumulated dust? its recommended to do that every 3-6 months, depending on ur surroundings.

Well it's probably been like 8 months since I've cleaned the vents and heatsink. I should probably do that.
But the temps shouldnt be a problem because most games are lagging right from the start, when I know the temps are low. I can certainly take a look at them next time I fire a game up though.

Sorry for the odd question, but I'm having trouble finding an answer.
I think my graphics card died (Radeon 6990m). I'm wanting to bake it, because the warranty is long gone and even my bluescreen won't render, and safe-mode is starting to fail as well, so I figure I don't have much to lose, but I can't figure out to remove the graphics card :/

Can anyone help me out, or point me to a video or something? After I get the chasis off, I take the copper heatsinks off and then I...'m stuck.

well, lets put it like this: if the dust accumulation reaches a certain point, then any kind of 3D load for however long will let the temps spike right into throttling territory ;) so yeah, check them and let us know where ur machine is at.

uve taken off both the vram heatsink and the gpu core heatsink, right? after that u still need to remove two additional screws holding down the gpu before u can gently pull it out of the mxm slot. theyre located on the lower left and right corners of the card.

This is probably a silly question, but where do I go about buying JUST a graphics card for my laptop? Everywhere I'm looking just shows me laptop models that have that graphics card in them. I'm specifically looking for the GTX 680m (in Canada)

Edit: Yikes, I found a few on ebay, but the cheapest they go is $700 for 680m 2GB. $900 for 4gb. Does $700 sound right to you? Also, do you think it's necessary to get an extra heatsink with this?

Pretty much any system builder will be able to sell to you directly, or you can contact Sager/Eurocom directly and they'll sell it to you as well. I believe Reflex is based in Canada and they may have a special shipping system setup where they could help you out better. Typically best to contact your reseller for the best info.

Thanks for the advice. I bought it through Sager in Cali, and paid a stupid amount of customs for it (I didn't realize there were Canadian resellers at the time.) I'm going to try contacting Reflex about it.

If I remember correctly, they don't charge you for RMA repairs as far as brokerage and taxes are concerned. Definitely check out Reflex for the ease of it,but in the event they can't help, just call Sager up and they'll help you figure it out.

Starting to feel the need to upgrade my 580M (150HM) what are my options? 680M? AMD?
Looking at the best GPU i can put in my laptop, instead of buying a new laptop It maybe better to just upgrade the GPU for now, everything still works great but I'm getting the itch to upgrade.

If price is no object, what's the best option to replace my failing 6990m in my 150HM? I see several recommendations for the 7970m, but I'm understandably leery of going with AMD again. My reseller also told me that "The 7970M is confirmed not working on your model. The older versions did work. Not the ones they have now." Is that accurate? Is the 680m the way to go?

@supralover: id agree with trvlbug, since the 780m's release is pretty imminent. if you can hold out for a bit longer, u may potentially get urself a 30% more performant 680m ;)

as for the 7970m, im not aware of any incompatibilities concerning "new" vs. "older" revisions, but cant guarantee anything, of course.

hey anyone having or had USB and RJ45 disconnecting issues- looks like I might have a southbridge chip issue - update all the drivers and still occasionally drops - really is a pain in the middle of a game. Need to check BIOS but would appreciate any ideas.
