Im about to do a thorough cleaning of my P150HM. Ive never properly cleaned the heatsinks and fins or repasted, only cleaned the vents and fans. Its gotten to a point where I have to do it almost every week or it starts throttling. Temps are fine though in the 70s, but the fps gets cut in half.
As Ive never repasted Id like to check some things:
1. I understand its recomended to use a single dot approx 0,5 mm, correct? I will probably go with Arctic MX4 (IC Diamond 7 from reseller).
2. Is there a picture of thermal pad placement? Would feel better even if its easy to see the stock.
3. Thermal pad thickness, can I get 0.5 mm and just place double layers if needed or will that have a negative impact?
4. ESD bracelet, do I need one? If I do, where do I even connect it to? Not much metal on the chassis.
I understand this is simple stuff for many of you, as most things are when you know how to do it. But its the first time for me and I dont want to mess up my precious.
I also see this as practice if I ever dare to upgrade the gpu![]()

Double thermal pads will add a large amount of thermal resistance where the pads meet. I wouldn't do it if I could avoid it.
-
I'll avoid that then. Those who've done it with 6990m, is it usually 0.5 mm, 1 mm or both?
-
hm, why are u even considering the thermal pads? they wont need to be swapped or renewed as long as theyre not totally worn down and in pieces
since ur gpu heatsink has two separate parts for the core and the vRAM/voltage regulators, ull only need to remove the gpu core part to repaste the gpu. u can leave the other heatsink part installed and still be able to clean it out properly, heatsink-fin-wise.
i can always recommend to consult the service manual of our machine in order to have an overview of all the necessary stepsif u dont already have it i can provide u with a link to it.

I thought I had to remove the heatsinks in order to clean them properly, fins and all. I also thought that meant the pads need to be replaced as the paste does.
Since its not overheating, perhaps I should just blow with compressed air not remove the heatsinks?
I have the service manual, thanks. I just couldn't find answers to my questions above. -
yeah reading the manual only will make you think that you do have to remove the vram heatsinks since it tells you to remove all screws. but as jaybee says, you can just remove screws 1-4 for the gpu.
-
Thats good to know, thanks.
Just logged a long session of Planetside 2. GPU max temp 86 degrees.
It doesnt seem I really need a repaste. I just want to be able to clean all fins etc. Can it be enough to blow air with both heatsinks still attached?
Or is it advisable to repaste anyway because my laptop is almost 2 years/it cleans more dust/xbox one is pc with gtx 780/whatever? -
Hi there everyone. Well i'm the proud new owner of a Clevo p150HM
Under the hood we have
i7 2720qm
Nvidia 485gtx 2gb
8gigs ddr3 ram, single stick
500gig 7200rpm drive
I use the lappy for the following @ 2560*1600
starcraft 2
Autocad
inventor
solidworks
I had a couple of questions...
with ram > I was hoping to be able to put 8+4+4 in the system... would that work ? if so, could i go a step further and put in 4+4+4+8 ? and still have dual channel?
the GPU > I get the issue where i use my Dell 30" display via Dual link DVI @ 2560*1600, my question is... How the hell can i get it to throttle down.... Without using the Nvidia Inspector....
expansion slots > I saw that the extra mini PCI-E slot has only USB capabilities ?> is this true ? i was hoping to put in an SSD in that slot -
- u can use nvidia inspector in that it automatically starts with windows and activates the profile where u force down the gpu clocks to idle even when an external display is connected. otherwise itll always stay in active 2d / low power 3d mode
- unfortunately this is true: that mini pci-express slot can pretty much only be used to install a cellular network modem for mobile online access. msata ssds are not supported on out machines
otherwise congratz on ur purchase, u definitely got a nice machine there (which of course has nothing to do with the fact that my laptop sported almost the same exact config when i bought it)

Just to clarify
I was going with 1 of two options for ram.
Currently i only have a single stick of 8gig, on the underside slots
option 1.
8gig stick by itself under the laptop + 2x4gig sticks together in the slots under the keyboard... ( i thought this would put 8 gigs in each 'channel' even though it's 3 sodimms) Am i correct in assuming each 'pair' of sodimm slots are a 'channel', so under the keyboard is channel 1 and under the laptop itself is channel 0 ?
Option 2.
8gig + 4gig in the slots under the laptop
2x4 gig under the keyboard.
this option would give me 20 gigs of ram, but there would be uneven Volumes of ram between the channels, although there is an even number of "sodimm" slots filled.... -
for synchronous dual channel to work, ull need to fulfill two conditions:
- installation of two ram modules per channel (meaning u cannot leave one slot empty, otherwise the remaining one will only run in single channel mode)
- installation of ram modules with the same size per channel (meaning combining 8 GB and 4 GB in the same channel will again result in single channel mode)
there is an exception, when the machine supports asynchronous dual channel mode. i remember that being possible with my old Asus C90S, which supported dual channel mode across three ram slots.
also be aware, that the overall ram speed will be limited by the slowest ram module u install, thus make sure to have modules rated for the same speed at the ready.
all in all, id recommend that u populate the second ram slot under the laptop with another 8GB module, otherwise at least one of ur modules will run in single channel mode...
cheers -
ah ok, so the two uner the keyboard should be the same, whilst the two on the underside of the laptop should be the same too and have even number of slots filled. Thanks
-
Could someone point me in the direction of acceptable/decent idle temps for the GPU and CPU package after repaste? I'm currently at 51-54C idle for the CPU, and 40-41C idle for the GPU, according to HWM. Haven't tried gaming/benching yet. Are those temps okay? I used the rice grain method, with PK-1.

After gettting my laptop back from warranty with a gtx680. I had the problem of updating my OS to windows 8 with no driver support for the GPU. I have to thank this forum for helping me out with a mod inf and everything! Awesome work haha. Unfortunately I think I might let go of my laptop now as I'm in need of more light and portable standard laptop. I really wanted a backlit Keyboard which was a shame with the p150hm
-
how much was the 680m ?
also, i now have 3*8gigs of ram in my p150hm... 1 sodimm slot lefti'll fill it with another 8 to make 32 when i come across a bargain

Have you looked at the card reader drivers? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That or webcam.
-
well it seems it was an intel power management thing on the chipset wasn't installed
webcam and everything else was installed fine :/ i was scratching my head wondering what it could be -
i'm considering buying the 460m or 560m from ebay given that nothing has changed in my situation (my 6990m breaking down).
i've only ever slotted in a solid state for my hard drive and cleaned my fans in my clevo, but have no other experience with slotting in and out new pieces.
i'm wondering if someone can tell me what i need to be looking for when i'm considering what video card i buy to ensure it is all compatible.
something like this for example
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M N11E GS A1 DDR5 1 5GB MXM B 3 0 VGA Video Card BD Module | eBay
am i going to have any issues with that in my p150hm?
also, is there a step by step process of how to perform this sort of installation? -
that is quite the downgrade from a 6990 to 460
-
-
its a good start for u to consider the p150hm service manual. it contains descriptions and steps on how to remove/install the gpu
just be sure to properly apply thermal paste and pads!

to my other question: do i need look for certain specifications as i'm searching for a video card to ensure it'll be compatible?
i really don't know what to make of all of these particulars.
do i just assume that any 460/560m i find is going to work? -
surest way would be to go for a gpu that was pulled or originally intended for clevo machines, since dell cards for instance dont work
that and mxm 3.0b format, thats pretty much it concerning older gen cards. as for newer gen gpus, sometimes they need a modified vbios (7970m), modified driver .inf files (675m / 680m) or they just dont work (yet) on our machines (780m)

Hey guys,
Just yesterday by Malibal P150HM died early on when I started up a game. Some quick background:
-My idle temps GPU temps were 60C or so, I tend to reduce settings since I did not like the high temps. At max, I would be around 90C
-I used ATI Tray Tools to manipulate voltages and clocks, again, mostly undervolt, very little overclocking done since I don't have the need for such high graphics
-Idle CPU temps high 40s, had maxed at at 94C for one of the cores I recall. (Don't know if this is related, but just not a happy temperature)
-I've do maintain my laptop with cleaning dust out with a Q-tip every few months, and I went ahead and did repastes as well
-Prior to the complete failure where I can't even get into windows, the computer would crash every so often when going to sleep mode
So, I figured out my GPU was dying, so I did a reflow, and it worked. I cleaned as much as I could out of the fans w/ a q-tip, and fresh repaste on the CPU and GPU. I also removed ATI Tray Tools, thinking it was causing some of my instability. I'm not sure though, and want to re use it since I can at least drop my voltage by 100mV at the very least from stock idle 0.9V
My temperatures right now idle:
CPU - high 40s
GPU - 40C or so, went to play D3 and maxed at 74C, which is a significant improvement
Anyway, I want my laptop to last as long as possible, and I have grown out of gaming frequently, but still need it for my work. Are there things out there I can take advantage of, like new BIOS or something (mine's from 2011 still), and should I use ATI Tray Tools or might it be causing problems? -

newb question.
if i'm ordering a 460m / 560m to replace my non-functioning 6990 in my p150hm, do i need to get new accompanying pieces (screws, heatsink, etc.) or if i just order the card itself, should everything fit together with what's already there? -

never a good idea to mix amd/nvidia gpus with the heatsink/xbrackets from the other manufacturer

Hi everybody!
I'm from Barcelona, so please forgive my english!
I'm having a weird issue with my clevo p151hm: I've recently make the crossflashing bios, p170hm, to enable the XTU capabilities of my new 2960xm and the motherboard. It was easy to flash the BIOS and EC, system rebooted with no problem, I could overclock to 4,0ghz with no BSODs or other issues except for higher temps, 89ºc benchmarking, the GPU was also in the high 80s. I've been gaming and benchmarking with no problems for 2 days.
But today something gone wrong! I've reseted to stock configuration on XTU and then after reboot I can not see anything neither in the laptop's display nor DVI nor HDMI.
I see leds flashing, the ODD is on, fans go on too, and I'm pretty sure it goes to windows correctly because I could do ALT + F4 and close the laptop. Sound is also working.
I've disassembled all parts of the laptop and reassembled it again, but it keeps not showing anything. I put the BIOS battery aside to reset it but no progress at all.
Any ideas? This could be the GPU failing, but would it go in to Windows? Any help will be appreciated. -
looks like all of the listings i found come devoid of any other parts besides the video card itself.
is my only option to buy a new 460m with all parts included? was hoping to avoid that expense, but it looks unavoidable.
is there a list of mxm 3.0b video cards i can find? preferably radeon ones?
this complicates my situation more than i'd hoped.
i'm starting to think it's just going to be a better option for me to sell my p150hm as a barebones sort of deal. -
well the x-bracket is definitely not interchangeable. as for the heatsink, ull probably have to cut off some parts with a dremel in order to make it fit on the 460m. either that or ure lucky and can make up for the differences with proper heat pad placement. all in all, itll definitely involve some extra work on ur part and will elevate the risk of bricking the new gpu if done incorrectly.

It's going to be a lot easier if you get the right heatsink....
-
Well, if anybody minds, I did solve my non-displaying issue. It was a pain in the a##, but easy to solve.

How is the compatibility of our p150hm with the newest cards? Does the GTX770M works flawlessly ? I'm wondering because my 6990M just died after 1,5 year (and ressurected after 10min of baking lmao) and i'm going to need a new one soon.
I don't want to get a worse card and the 770M seems to fit my needs very well. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 7970M is the best as far as I am aware and faster than the 770M.
-
-
Yeah i totally agree with you guys,
but after a dead 6990m i don't know if i should trust AMD anymore.
also not having HDMI connection is a huge problem for me because i like to plug my TV and play with a xbox controller and i like to watch anime on the TV. -
want to thank everyone who held my hand along the way in fixing my p150hm.
it works perfectly fine again, and i'm a bit more knowledgeable about laptops in general now.
the 6990m seems to be a card that has troubled a lot of people, not just me.
even if it is far superior to the 560m that's inside now, my gaming habits aren't as fierce as they used to be, so it's okay with me.
i'll sell this someday soon in order to pick-up a w230st.
thanks to everyone who dropped input on my situation.
nice to make use of the fantastic monitor on the p150hm, but this'll be moving over soon as i'll be using a dell u2412m that is on the way. -
Hi,
Just wondering has anyone encountered any issues with their webcam in the P150? Recently at the slightest movement of the LCD lid the webcam disconnects ie I hear the "device disconnected" sound play followed by "device connected". When I move the lid slightly back and forth device manager is constantly refreshing with the "BisonCam".
I had a look at the service manual but it doesn't seem to indicate where the web cam connections go to / from. Does anyone happen to know? -
i would take the laptop apart and see where the lead from inside the screen connects to the motherboard. It has just come loose.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah, that sounds like a LCD connector issue, it should be under the keyboard.
-
Hey guys! After baking my 6990m three times i decided on getting a cheap gpu as a replacement since I do not game much anymore. I was wondering if this would work in my sager8150?
Toshiba NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1 5 GB MXM3 0B Laptop Graphics Card K000127390 | eBay
I think i read somewhere DELL cards wont work in ours. Will i need to specifically look for a card that has come from a sager? Or will one of these be fine? Im having a bit trouble finding cheap replacements
