So I guess when installing a game on an ssd you have to decide if its worth the space for a few seconds off your load times

Justin--your review of the 8130 on Youtube says that XoticPC is using an LG matte screen in the 8130 and not the AUO11ED that was featured in the review. Could you confirm or clarify this? I was assuming all 8130s shipped with the AUO11ED. But if that is not the case, it looks like you are not using the same screens as Mythlogic--they are using the AUO matte screens. Thanks.
-
I believe the default is the AUO11ED, and his review states that it is AUO11ED..
I'm not sure where you heard he's using the LG screens.. -
Meraki--see around 13:07-13:24 in XoticPC's video review of the 8130. The reviewer says that, although the particular model they are reviewing has the AUO11ED, XoticPC is currently using the LG matte screen.

Yeah, after listening to it again, he seems to say that they usually use the LG screens.
Curious also. -
so are the vents on the bottom of the laptop intakes or exhausts?

-
oh, sweet. thank you sir
-
Watched a 2 hours BR movie with the laptop on my legs and never felt any warm temp, at all. I'm really impressed.
Eric -
Hmmm Justin can you please verify that the matte screen option for the NP8150 is indeed the AUO11ED v4?
-
Just had a few laptops and desktops yanked at work today thanks to the SB i7 recall. Better late than never I suppose.
-
Wow, your company is really on the technological front if they already have Sandy Bridge systems as your workstation....
-
Yeah... I think we still have a few from the generation before core 2 duo, the hyper threaded ones....
-
Sorry, should've been more specific. Computers that are sold here with SB have been pulled.
-
haha yeah i was gonna post in this thread earlier about how amazed i was about where you work, then i was like maybe he just works retail :x
-
Really. Last place I worked didn't use XP until 2008.
-
We're finally doing a Win 7 refresh later this year... IE 6 decommissioning is going to be a nightmare with 10s of thousands of apps programmed for it....
-
I'm having second thoughts on whether I want to purchase this laptop, mainly with the recent bf3 announcement. I played bf2 to death and am not willing to play bf3 on any dropped settings! While no system requirements are known, are you guys confident a 485M or 6970 will max it out at 1080p?
The two cards run BC2 ~47-50fps all maxed... -
There is no way to tell for sure until recommended specs come out or some gameplay videos. If by the time videos start to roll out and show that the graphics look similar to that of BC2 then things should run pretty fine.
-
How hard is it exactly to upgrade the GPU on a NP8150. Is it a simple case of opening up the notebook and swapping out the cards, or are there also other issues you have to keep in mind?
Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with aftermarket upgrades concerning notebooks (other than RAM). -
IE 6 should've died a long time ago.
-
Well... guess what... some scans of the gameinformer magazine just came out:
-
Wow, those smoke effects sure look good but would probably kill performance. Still hard to tell tbh but I think its safe to say you wont be "maxing" the game at native 1920 by 1080 with a single 485m, let alone a 6970. This is probably where crossfire and sli would shine. Although it doesn't look like TOO big of a leap from BC2 tbh.
I'd say you'd probably be able to run it on medium high to high settings on native res with a single card. But then again I am just basing these off the screenshots, its still to early to tell, call this an educated guess based on years of experience on how well games run on systems based on how well they run current games.
Edit: Now that I remember they increased the cap for PC players to 64 players. While they bumped down console players to 24 I think. Yeah this is probably going to force us to drop to medium settings in 64 player games without a doubt. -
I've seen that some resellers offer vinyl/wood/suede notebook skins for the 8150 (PCTorque and Xotic are two, I think). I have mine on order from Malibal, so does anyone have any idea where I can get these aftermarket? I have a Dell m1530 now, and I got the skin on it from skinit.com. They're pricey, but it's been worth it- so I'm looking at one for my Sager.
Any suggestions for stores? Do any of the resellers offer any of them separate? The strange thing is that I see the two above resellers offer them, but don't have a page where you can see the available designs (unless I missed them). -
Here's a link for the xotic skins.. The way they described it to me though, they wouldn't be selling just the skin as it's a permanent vinyl thing. -
Question is, it will change the texture of the laptop, correct?
What is the finish like after applying the skin?
Can one of the XoticPC Reps come enlighten us? -
I'm sure it'll be smooth.. Depending on how bumpy that rubberized material is of course.the told me it was like the same vinyl they use to put stripes or designs on cars
-
Fortunately for you, these Sager laptops are built with an elegant manner; meaning the parts are laid out in a very user friendly manner. The basic idea is to swap in and out just like you said.
But there are times where the heatsink itself needs changing e.g. Sager NP8690's GTX 280m to an ATi 5870m requires a different sized heatsink due to reports of contact problems. Other factors include the type of GPU (MXM Type). The new Sagers are MXM 3.0 Type B, so buy a GPU card that supports this...usually beforehand, just ask the forums about which card that can be upgraded to and the CPU too.
CPU upgrading is easier though; screw off the fans, take the heatsink out, place the processor in, apply thermal paste, then place the heatsink back. -
Can someone compare the noise this generates when idle compared to the NP8690 (W860CU)? I remember being annoyed by the buzzing fan noise.
-
If the 8150 is anything like the 8170, the fans stay put. You just remove the attached heatsink for both the CPU and GPU. Piece of cake. Four screws each.
-
You'd be surprised how much stuff is still run on XP and IE 6 in corporate America...
-
Oh, didn't know that...how does the heat get ventilated then?
-
you've gotta put the fans back on when you're done lol
-
LOL
I didn't mean that!
I had the NP8690 before; the heatsink was only removable after you remove the fans. From what htwingnut was implying, the fans on the newer NP8130/8150/8170 are stationary with the heatsink removable without the fans being taken off. -
Oooh! Hahaha my bad..
-
Thanks for the replies. I've been Googling for website that sell separate notebook GPU's but I only came up with this Belgian(?) MXM website. The GTX480, just as an example--I know it's a terrible GPU, costs around 700 Euro's on there. Seems kinda steep, especially considering I could get the GTX485 for an additional USD 500.
Is the GTX480 just exorbitantly expensive, or is it the website? -
Any idea when the Radeon HD 6970M will be offered in this model yet?
-
Right. See my post on it here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-impressions-sager-np8170-12.html#post7139989 -
Haha yeah I read it.
The Heart of Gold has inspired us all. -
No timeframe has been released yet. But it should be soon - possibly before the 8150 will be available again (which is likely late March/April if you are ordering now), so it could be worth waiting.
-
Alright just got my baby in. Took it a while to leave the states and such. Anyways what do you guys think of these temps?
For idle at normal fan settings all 4 cores at 40-48.
Gpu idles at 38.
Now with furmark, fans at full blast I got the gpu up to 85c after around 10 minutes.
Prime with fans at full blast, cpu seems to stay at the mid 60's on all cores.
Now my question is how hot is too hot for both the cpu and the gpu? -
Lol walk into best buy and you can still buy a sandy bridge dell XPS with I believe the 2500 or 2600 non K model
-
No one has got one with the 2920XM yet?
Edit: Actually, I think this would only be important on the 8170, as I wanted to know the overclocking capacity.. -
Yup.. kinda beats the purpose of the 2920xm..
I mean they let 8150 take it but does not allow overclocking.
Hopefully they update the BIOS to open overclocking options.. -
Wow.. good temps!
Hope mine actually holds up like that..
-
Ah so those are good temps? I don't know lol its been ages and my desktop is on H2O so I am not use to seeing temps like these lol. This is actually my first real gaming laptop. Anything you guys want to know?
-
What is your ambient room teperature? With ambient of about 22C, my CPU idles at 35C and GPU at 38C. Download and run either Prime95 or CoreDamage. For prime95 be sure to download the 64-bit version (assuming you're using 64-bit windows).
Also if you could run CPU-Z and watch your CPU speed when taxed. With Prime95 mine spikes to 3GHz then slowly goes back down to 2.4GHz. With CoreDamge it maintains 2.8GHz and temps are a few C higher. -
Remember you got the 17 incher so its bound to run cooler considering more room and such. Yeah with prime 64 bit running for around 10 minutes temps seem to steady out on the mid 60's. Ambient room temp is 21c. Also the 2820 run at higher clocks.
-
Right, just would like to know for comparison. My CPU not using max fans but let the system manage it, they run in mid 70's. 2820QM runs 100MHz faster at max clock speed, so there shouldn't be much difference. I'll run at max fans just to see how well it fares. I think the 15" and 17" should be similar in cooling. If your GPU doesn't exceed 85C max fans, then that's good. Mine is about there too with max fans. With system managed it peaks at about 92C. Of course that's furmark, gaming it sits in the low 80's.
-
Ran prime again with CPUz enabled, clocks went up to 3.0ghz for a few seconds and then steadied out at 2.5 - 2.6ghz. Without max fans temps are around high 60's low 70's on all cores.
I remember we had a discussion about the fan control FN+1. I have to agree with your point, I sure do wish the systme itself would bump it up to max on its own instead of depending on us to do it. I am sure without a doubt that if I ran furmark without max fans my temps would get up to high 90's.
Also btw in your 8170 thread, I noticed the settings you ran furmark in. To properly stress the gpu you should enable extreme burning and have 32aa enabled on native res. Try that with max fans and tell me what your temps get at.
