Meaker, thanks for that info! Which specific cards will work? Do I have to stick with AMD? Do I have to update any firmware?

Update: After reading up on the internet for a while, I ended up going with an nVidia card instead of another AMD.

I bought a good working pull from a Clevo/Sager which was sold as a part for P150HM or P170HM.

The card was plug and play (except thermal compound of course). I was able to install drivers straight from nVidia without modifying INF files or anything! Yay!

BUT, I've noticed the edges of everything on my screen are a bit jagged looking, including fonts, borders around these forum posts, mouse cursor, etc.

Do I need an updated firmware for my motherboard or something?

Here's what I have right now:

    MB Series: P170HMx
    BIOS Revision: 1.01.10LS1
    KBC/EC firmware Revision: 1.00.09SA2

    VGA Card: nVIDIA GTX 485M
    VBIOS Revision: 70.04.26.00.01
    VBIOS Build Date; 09/20/10

    Thanks!

Also, what kind of slot is that TV Tuner Card slot which sits empty on mine? Can I use it for anything besides the TV tuner that was meant for it?

It's mini PCI-E physical slot wired for USB if I remember correctly.

Check your internal panel settings in the control panel for the display weirdness.

The HM wont have such an issue since it does not use the IGP.

Hey guys does this laptop support UEFI? I searched on this thread and saw someone saying it does support.
I looked into HWInfo on motherboard section and it says it does support UEFI.
But when I try to boot my USB stick with UEFI Windows 10 CU, it doesn't boot.
Why is HWInfo saying is support UEFI?

Usually it's a hybrid mode due to the GPU not supporting UEFI and the architecture of the BIOS is quite old. It's from a bit before UEFI became a think in notebooks.

Gave this laptop to my dad years ago, he just uses it as a file server.

He just told me that it's now beeping then shutting off.

I need guidance on what the issue could be. Finally the 6970M gone bad, maybe?

    1. Does anyone know how I could determine what mobo is in my Sager/Clevo/Xotic NP8170, build date 03-18-11?
My Xotic build sheet lists everything but the mobo info. Do not want to open it up.

    2. Are there any vendors who might still stock the mobo?

    Thx
    Steve

You need to make sure the cards are the same interface. You are asking very specific questions about old hardware so give as much info as you can, do you have pictures?
