Me, too.
Seemed to be the "sweet spot" in price/performance.

I just wanted it because they were all prime numbers and added together were all prime...
-
Nerd Alert!!.....
-
2720qm club is more awesome because it's all prime. we are sad people...
-
Agreed! I'm a member as well.
-
Just sent my check out to Xotic PC! Hopefully that means they can begin processing my order asap(when the parts are in). Very excited!!
-
Congrats! So are you a 2720QM member as well? Or do I have to snub you?
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
It is interesting to note that the vast majority of Sager NP8170/Clevo P170HM's that came our way went for the 2720QM...

Just changed my Malibal order to a new intel 120gb 510 series.. he/she in the chat stated that orders should start shipping in a week! Lets hope thats not a pipe dream.

2630
All i care about is gaming and light youtube video editing.
-
Is the GTX 485m really on par with a desktop gtx 460 1 gb card? Cause i was looking at this gameplay of crysis on a gtx 260 and it looks amazingly smooth.
YouTube - GTX 460 Crysis Gameplay Very High 720p -
I was just kidding. No need to justify your purchase. You get what you think you'll need and/or afford.
-
Yea i sacrificed bluray and the processor to get the gtx 485m, I figured i can mostly watch movie files off the hdd in hd and upgrade the bluray drive later. And if the processor really bugs me after a few years (doubt it) i could always upgrade that as well.
Though more RAM and an SSD drive upgrade will come within a year for sure. (got the standard 4 gb ram)
Oh and i just ordered Crysis Maximum Edition earlier today
-
It's only a 10% difference, for +$160. You aren't missing anything.
-
Hmm, the 6970M is now up for order, in the M17x R3.
It's only a $175 upgrade over the GTX 460M. If that carries over to this machine, that's $320 less than the GTX 485M upgrade.
Wow. -
Wow. If that's the case, I'm overly impressed and could probably sell my 485m and buy the 6970m and still save $150. But I won't bother. I'm happy with mine.
That will make the choice to update to the best screen or a nice fast SSD a no-brainer then if you were budgeting a 485m. -
I think I will probably still just stick w/ the 485m.
-
I have to be honest, though. The M17x is tempting.
If I don't get a chance at the P170HM w/ 90% LCD, I'll definitely consider it. -
When it comes down to it, is the only difference between the 485M and the 9670m a slight performance difference, or is there more? From what I have gathered there may be some other things, but I am very uninformed on them:
Doesn't the 6970 use more power?
Is there any word yet on temperature/overclocking performance of the 6970? It seems the 485m OC's very well.
Is there any word on if the Optimus equivalent in the 6970m will work?
That $320 is pretty tempting...I'm also shocked Alienware wouldn't charge a LOT more for a video card upgrade.
I guess I can throw in a side question - Looking at the R3 has me mildly curious about 3d. The displays that come in the Clevos are 60hz and thus not 3d capable, right? And for that matter, aren't the only factors that determine 3d capability the monitor, the glasses, and the video card's drivers? -
Just changed my mind that quickly, when I saw that Dell charges +$70 for the Intel 6300.
-
I dunno. Spec'd as the same machine I bought from XoticPC, costs about $350 more, and that's with the 6970m not 485m. The M17x is definitely more expensive. 6970m should show up with the Sager / Clevo machines soon then I would hope.
-
Yeah plus it bothers me, that 1080p is non-standard, making it a $150 premium. That's ridiculous.
-
Can you put two drives in the M17?
-
@Kevin Jack, I'm sure you know, but just in case, you can get the wifi card off newegg for around $30. Just an option.
EDIT: Yes, adwil1231, you can. -
I wil definitely be sticking to my 8170 not only for the specs but i hate the alienware design...i always prefer a simplistic black design.
-
Yeah, I also prefer the simplistic design. It just helps when I am at work or in public as no one will truly know what I have.
-
Since i got the 4 gb of ram option on my 8170 will the ram be installed under the keyboard so when i bump it up to 8 gb i can easily install it in the back?
-
Thank you very much for your quick response...
After careful consideration i believe im willing to wait for a while until the 500 series gtx's arrive or the 6970... and going a bit overbudget in order to gurantee a couple of smooth gaming years.
Thanks again -
10% in gaming performance or 10% in general processing power? All i care about is how much the 2630 affects gaming performance.
-
Man...I can't wait for the 6970m to come out in this machine!
-
Can someone who currently has the gtx 485m download the new crysis 2 mp demo and try maxing it out at 1080p and let us know how it looks and runs? Screenshots preferably.
Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo -
I did download Crysis 2 Demo, didn't measure framerates, but probably low 30's. I will do one with fraps.
-
Hey does anyone know how the heat of the 6970 is looking? Will it be hotter than the 460? I am considering getting the 6970 if it becomes available before my laptop starts to be built. I ordered end of Jan. If it is under 200 I might end up updating my build. Currently set to get the 460.
-
Justin@XoticPC (or any other XoticPC Rep) can you confirm if NP8170 supports SATA III or not? According to this chat it does not.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...marks-brands-news-advice-906.html#post7216795 -
In the end... Well, I decided not to go with 8170. I've been debating between it and the M17X R3 for some time now, and I decided to go with Alienware instead.
I'd like to thank all the resellers; Justin, Larry, Donald, Malibal, Mythlogic, and anyone else I'm forgetting for the help and coverage during the whole Intel fiasco.
And I'd like to thank Merraki, HT, and Forerunner for graciously providing their input on the models.
Thanks guys. Peace.
-
This says SATA III is available on up to 2 ports..hm...
http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/324645.pdf -
Yes I know it does, and that came through loud and clear during the whole Intel SATA controller fiasco. So wonder what's up with that?
-
Hello all, I am new to the Sager club and the forum. I ordered the NP8170 last week. I just got a promotion so I talked to someone from xoticpc about upgrading my order. They said they will be shipping out their first set of fixed Sandybridge laptops next week. I'm sure I'll still be waiting a while but that is good news for all of us.
-
1) Thank you for your service
2) Welcome to the forums and the sager club
3) You'll enjoy your machine very much. -
I can confirm that the 8170 / P170HM & 8150 / P150HM models do support SATA III.
-
I looked at the alienware it was just a bit expensive for the features I was looking for. The only bonus is the lighting effects and what not but that is not really a huge concern for me. I hope you like the laptop and regardless we shall all be gaming together.
-
Thanks for confirming.
-
I just hope the np8170 will be compatible with my logitech z-5500 speaker system in 5.1 audio, i know it does 7.1 audio but i haven't heard if it can downconvert to 5.1 through a spdif to toslink adapter.
-
I think you should be able to select your speaker set up through the Sounds and Audio Devices manager. Also, if you don't have an a mini-toslink adapter, you can get a toslink to mini-toslink cable.
-
I do have the adapter so hopefully i'm all set! Can't wait to play Crysis on my HDTV with 5.1 audio (hopefully!)
-
Im looking at buying the NP8170 and i was wondering how it handles running Windows Server 2008R2. Anyone out there can give me any info on the subject?
This would be either a dual boot or a 2008R2 Workstation conversion. -
I want the purchase price as low as possible.
Should I go for the i7 2740qm or q2630qm?
SSD or hybrid HD?
Nvidia GTX470m or GTX485m?
What I expect from this notebook is not too mush "annoying" noise, good performance in VM-ware and at least 3 years of gaming fun.
All advice is welcome.. -
1. 2630QM, because $160 more for just a 10% increase in clockspeed is not going to do you any good.
2. Depends on your budget. The hybrids still can't touch a real SSD.
3. The GTX 485M is leaps above what the 470M can reach. Between the two, I'd take the 485M without a second thought. -
I had a very postive experience with mxm-upgrade.com: I had quite a lot of troubles installing drivers, overclocking, downclocking, updating my bios, etc when I recieved my ati hd4670 (upgraded my acer 5920g which had a standard nvidia 8600m gt). The guy who owns the mxm-upgrade company kept answering all of my mails (and I send him a lot of mails, cuz I had a lot of errors), and he even offered to come by and install/fix the gpu himself (we r both from Belgium). Anyway after a week (or maybe two weeks) of searching for a solution together (well he searched, and I tried his solutions xD) I came by and there we tried fixing my problems for 2-3 hours long, and eventually we solved everything by a simple bios update.
So you can see that eventhough I had problems with upgrading my gpu, the guy helped me a lot (he is not someone who ditches you once you've payed, but helps finding the problem because he wants to know the solution) untill we resolved the issue. -
Lol, i got banned from the Toshiba forums for saying they took too long to announce when SB qosmios were coming back so i bought a superior sager. Angry much? LOL!
