Yep, on the highest settings you should do fine at a resolution of 1680 x 1050. With AA stuff and all the jazz us guys go on about![]()

These guys are talking about Desktop cards, but if you check on notebookcheck.net, they will say that the GTX 460M is better than the 4870 discussed in post #6 in the above link. Hope this helps!

As my 3 year old laptop can do it, I am sure this one can. That's not hands-on experience, but I do know the 460M is much more powerful than my 9800GTS.
-
So, I just did something VERY difficult... My 8170 is ready to be shipped out TODAY, but I put a hold on my order to wait for the 6970. One of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make! (Not really, but still, it was tough!)
It's pretty reasonable to assume that if the bigger Clevos are getting the 6970s now, the 8170 should get them pretty soon, no? -

Lol, good for you! I'm tempted to mess with your mind by saying that I would have stuck with the 485M, but that would be too mean
Mr. Mysterious -
Is the 470M that much of an improvement over the 460M?
I dont want to get into Lotro and turn on the highest detail with the highest Resolution but be dissapointed cause i cant.
EDIT: i dont have the blu ray player - didnt think i would use it much. But i want to be able to use true 1080P. Will the 460M get me there? -

The GTX 470M is about....:
15% faster than the 460M
10% faster than the 480M (horrible card, btw)
and about 8% slower than the 485M.
Mr. Mysterious -
I have about the same machine as you on the way save for the Blu Ray. i have 1 BR in my possession and i want to be streaming movies instead.
Do you guys think i would be dissapointed coming from an ATI 3870? If the 470M provides a marked improvement then i would consider it.
I wish i had ya'lls money thats for darn sure!!! -
@Kivnul, have you already tried SpeedFan?
maybe we all should send Clevo a email to ask for a bios update.
@mrmysterious66
The GTX470 is more like, 15-40% slower than the GTX485m.
The GTX 460m is like 30-60% slower than the GTX485m "check 3dmark vantage"
scource: http://www.notebookcheck.nl/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-470M.39309.0.html
this is just my opinion but I think the gtx470m is not worth the money.
either go for the gtx460m and upgrade in the future or buy instantly the gtx 485m! -
Stock vs. stock, the 485M has a comfortable lead of at least 30%, in all games.

Oh I used the results from 3DMark05 instead of 3DMark Vantage. Sorry, lol
Mr. Mysterious -
I'd hold off, for the 6970M. It will be just a few dollars more than the 460M, while totally dominating it.
GTX 485M vs 6970M vs GTX 460M Benchmarks. -
I have decided to to forgo the 470M in favor of the 510 120GB SSD upgrade.
Way i see it, i will get an overall performance upgrade and i can always upgrade the Video Card next year. -

Excellent and sensible choice! Enjoy your new system.
Mr. Mysterious -
I'll try speedfan when I get home. Currently in the Dr lobby waiting for a physical
-
You're making me so anxious to get a 6970m in my system. It's like the budget-perfect card.
-
I should have mine by the end of march or start of April. I didn't order any SSD's, went for 2x 1tb drives instead. Spec in sig
-
I disagree profusely. There is a good chance the SSD will be cheaper in the future, while an mxm video card upgrade will likely be difficult to find and extremely pricey. I would really suggest just getting a 7200 rpm HD now along with the 6970 or 485. Get a SSD when you have the money and put the 7200rpm hd in your other bay.
Now, I take this all back of you're SURE you'll only be playing LOTRO on it. 460m will easily max it out. -
Yea, wont be for a long long time until ssds come down in price. Not only that, prices will probably go up for a little bit just because of japan.
-
oops, i knew that
-
installed speedfan. Under the configure button, fans tab, no fans are listed. On the main page, just checking automatic fan speed doesn't do anything.
-

Try MSI Afterburner...they could possibly change your fan settings.
Mr. Mysterious -
The GTX 470M is a waste of money, anyway. I say, spend the $200 on an SSD, if you're choosing between the two.
-
Okay I got mine and installed all of my software. My only complaints so far is the screen (Glossy one) has a low viewing angle before the color shifts. The keys on the keyboard feel stiff to the point where every key stroke seems to shake the keyboard and it has an odd feeling to it as you type. The touchpad left and right mouse buttons that I don't use are very hard to press down making them frustrating to use. The touchpad itself has a rough finish which is very odd making it awkward to use since my finger doesn't slide as easily it does on dell laptops. For the 3500 USD I spent I kind of expected it to be a little bit better, but the performance of the machine is really nice. They should check out the Dell Inspiron keyboard and touchpad for how to do it right next time. I find the numpad on the right kind of worthless also for a laptop.
I have a lot of programs and tests to run so we'll see. -
I agree with most of your points, but I have to disagree about the touchpad/touchpad buttons. The touchpad on this laptop IMO is great and the buttons aren't very hard to press down. You also have to remember that the buttons become easier to press during the life of the laptop. I would much rather the buttons be a little stiff at first and then loosen over time. My dell m1530 had the buttons almost have no bounce back what so ever after a year of use, so maybe that is why I enjoy the quality feel of the touchpad buttons....I don't really think the keyboard is all that bad either besides the keys being chick-let or whatever you want to call that
It's just my opinion vs yours though so neither of us are right or wrong, just thought I would throw out some counter points to your complaints. The viewing angles of the screen definitely blow, there is no debating that! -
Odd with the i7-2920XM and 485m on that 3DMark Vantage I get Result which is dead on for the GPU score, but for the CPU score it's way below what it should be. Why? I did notice my laptop runs freezing cold at the moment. I have power options on High Performance.
I did notice this program running in my hidden icons. Not sure which driver installed that. Looks a bit redundant.
Anyway any feedback would be helpful. HTWingNut might know since his benchmark looks right. -
This was on the NP8690- I've looked everywhere regarding what it does haha but still no luck. Maybe someone here will know O_O
-
Anyone who ordered near Feb. 28th get to phase 2 on Xotic PC? My check cleared on Monday and it's still pending parts. Kinda getting frustrated knowing they have my money and it hasn't even begun being built!
-
PM or send an email to JP at Xotic with your order number and he will give you a rough estimate when Sager should be building your laptop.
-
Hey, I totally understand about the touchpad being rough at first. It actually feels a lot smoother if you have natural oils on your hands, the oils on your hands make the touchpad feel like it was meant to be...smooth and easy to glide upon. When I use something like hand sanitizer before using the touchpad, I find it difficult to use.
-
so it works ok if you dont clean it or your hands..? idk how i feel about that
-
It won't go into production for awhile buddy. I ordered Feb 8th and I haven't received my tracking number yet. -
Dammit, and I was getting lulled into a sense of security on the default screen. It really seems split 50/50, good and bad opinions on the screen. Are you just possibly being picky? Or is it really THAT bad?
-
I ordered mine on 2/25 and my checked cleared a couple weeks ago and I am still in phase 1.
-
Yeah, me either...but the surface of the touchpad is that plastic/aluminum finish that feels rough when moving your finger vertically.
-
HOpefully it works out better for me. The screen will have to be better than this 6 year old matte screen dell I have. I know it wont match up to my wife's 17" macbook screen but I am hoping it is close.
-
Anyone know how the screens match up with those of the 870cu? If it's considerably worse I my have to do a screen transplant when mine arrives.
-
I like the matte so much, I went and ordered one of those matte film and put onto my G73JH glossy screen. I love it!!
-
I ordered on 3/11 and my wire transfer just cleared. Brett at Xotic said I am in for the long wait. Maybe 3rd week of April. I freikin can't wait. I have an external drive all ready with my software to load. I made this huge PDF with all the specs for the GTX485, i7-2820 and all the reviews I could find, 163 pages. I finger through it every nite. How bad do you have it??
-
I went with the i7 2820 and the GTX485 and 16gb, I am 56 and this is pretty much my last physical laptop. My next one will be plugged into my brain so I can just think at it
-
I ordered on Feb. 25 and I am not in phase 2. It will say pending parts until they get the parts and that has nothing to do with when your check clears. They do not require payment until your parts get there. It will not be build until payment clears. I just talked to some at Xotic PC. They said they might have parts for us within a week but it has been taking about 15 days to assemble the laptops. Then it will go to phase 4, shipment. Phase 3 is only for people who orders skins.
-
I wanted the 8meg cache in the 2820, and am not planning never to upgrade. Wife said get it now cuz we have other plans, like getting ready for retirement. Now I'll have my dream machine when I sit and watch the grass grow and game on the patio. (dreamer! nothin but a dreamer .. )
-
If I was on an extreme budget, I would order the 8170 with only a single hard drive upgrade and 4 meg memory upgrade and still love it. It would still be pretty much faster than my 2 year old G73
-
I still have a Toshiba that has lasted me 6YEARS, I run XP on it and will have it until it blows.
-
I went with 16gb for my rendering programs and I wanted Xotic to put them in because I never want to open it up. (maybe out of curiosity tho)
-
I will never ever go with an ATI card again. I have always been nVidia. Absolutely no gaming problems ever. My G73 still has some problems with some games. Especially the ones that have been optimized for nVidia.
-
Also the size!! Alienware will not fit in my nice leather roller but the NP8170 will fit just nice as ever.
-
you guys are about 2 months ahead of me boohoo!! I might see it in april ?!?!?
-
how was the fan sound coming out of it??
-
How do you like your 8130, I almost ordered one.
-

rsdunphy, you have to be careful not to double-post (or quadruple-post in this case o.o), it's against the rules. There's an edit button you can use, you know?
Well....I ordered my machine on the 16th, so I'm probably going to have to get it in the first week of April, sometime then. I hhhhate waiting.
