There are ways to clean install from an upgrade version of Windows 7...![]()
I personally use the upgrade version of the student licensing all the time.
-
Yes...I wasn't very clear. You can do workaround clean installs using upgrade media, but you still need a valid, activated copy of a previous version of Windows. The 3-machine product key that comes with the family pack is an upgrade key.
(If he meant a 3-license OEM pack and not "family" pack, the point's irrelevant. That's why I asked.) -
Hey guys, since i went with a single 500 gb 7200 rpm hdd with windows 7 home preloaded, what does this mean when i upgrade to a secondary ssd drive in the future? Will i be able to reinstall windows 7 over to the ssd drive easily?
Also, do you think in about a year the price of both SSDs and Bluray burners will drop significantly? -
I am planning on picking up an SSD eventually but I just dont want to pay out the nose for it. I will probably not pick up a blu ray drive at all unless for some unknown reason games begin to get put on them. In a year though based on the way electronics roll I think they may drop a bit.
-
Best bet is to buy a previous Gen SSD. Right now OCZ and Intel are coming out with their next generation SSD's, and the previous gen ones are still plenty fast, and with sales you can pick one up for $1.50/GB or less. I bought both my 120GB G2 Intel's for ~ $170.
-
Is there a good place in particular to watch for sales like this?
-
I was wondering about that. I just ordered from Larry/LPC yesterday and wasn't sure how the shipping situation compared between each reseller. I know they are in the same factory or something but I wasn't sure if everyone gets put in the same line, or if each reseller as an alloted amount of useable space. Either way, nice to hear you had such a fast turnaround, i'm excited.
-
Should be getting mines friday! Can't wait!
-
Guys / Gals, would appreciate if you could spend a little time reporting your CPU temps for the better good of education here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...s-cpu-temperature-clock-speed-comparison.html
Thanks. -
I heard from xotic and they can't really give me a real estimate yet. Based on all the information and people posting here I have to be getting close. I am running out of time to get it. Hopefully the first week of April...or I am going to be screwed.
-
It was incredibly optimistic of you, to order at the end of February, when the official word at the time said Clevo's shipments wouldn't stabilize until the end of April.
I do hope you get yours sooner, it's just that the writing was on the wall. -
Considering late Jan orders shipped about 2 weeks ago, a conservative estimate for you would be to simply add 4-5 weeks to the week of 6 Mar.
-
He ordered on February 25. It all depends on how quickly production ramps up, per week. I doubt Clevo is anywhere near the top of Intel's list of allotments, though they are pretty big in China, so who knows.
-
I also think it depends on what option set you chose. high demand parts, like the 485m will probably take longer to ship than those with, say, the 470m.
-
I went w/ the 2630, 485, 6gb RAM and the 500GB HD.

Hey owners of NP8170s, need a bit of help.
A member on another forum has just received his NP8170 yesterday, and apparently his ports aren't working, specifically his USB3.0, memory card reader and his LAN port. His USB 2.0 works however. He has tried the Sager drivers from the support website but could not install it because the drivers do not detect them in the laptop.
The controllers do not show up in his device manager...weird. Any suggestions? I had only one for him though; to reinstall Windows so it sets up a generic driver for the missing ports. -
Yeah, my best recommendation there is to do a fresh, clean Windows installation.
-
Phase 2!!!
-
^^^^^^
|||||||||
This. If that doesn't work then return for replacement. -
WOO HOO!!
Just got an email from Xotic telling me to confirm my parts, looks like i'm moving onto phase 2 soon, i ordered Feb. 28th....hopefully i get my laptop in 2 weeks. -
I believe someone else had this problem and it was resolved after reflashing the bios.
-
Yes, this will fix all of those issues, Thisisalamp.
-
I don't get it. People are paying thousands of dollars for this laptop and it comes with non working ports. Thanks god you can solve this problem by reflashing bios, but anyways.... that's quite ridiculous, isn't it?
-
Yes. I will be rather bummed if my rig doesn't work right out of the box.
-
Same here, but in preparation for this does the driver cd come with a bios? If not, where would I get it from.
-
Thanks for the help guys, will report to him about the suggestions.
Hopefully, it will help him solve his problems, and with Malibal backing up the statements gives some assurance.
The BIOS are available in a thread here in the Sager forum, and I think you can get it from the Sager support section too. -
I love how whenever i mention this laptop and gtx 485m gpu on other sites everyone reprimands me about how i should've saved money and bought a desktop instead, as if i didn't know that desktop pc would be a fraction of the price. I hate how people get all judgemental that someone would wanna choose a gaming laptop to have room to room portability to suit their needs rather than being tied down to one room on a desktop.
PC gamers can be real elitists sometimes. -
Some don't realise that not everyone relates value directly to cost. I could spend 50% less for 50% more performance but what good is that going to do me when I want to have the option of gaming in a different room or area. Hell sometimes I play games relaxing on a couch with a wireless controller and then watch a movie. With the SB technology we will have longer battery time so even more flexibility. To me, that is where the true value is.
My G170 (spec in sig) has an ETA of the 1st of April (hope it is not a joke) and a desktop would never allow me such power and flexibility. The first game I will install is GTA IV and this laptop plays it maxed out better than some desktops. -
Duuuude, buy a netbook and a slammin' desktop, is all you'll hear on non-notebook sites.
That's why I only post about them here and in the laptop thread I run on NeoGAF. -
Yeah, lots of the gamers I know say there is no such thing as a gaming laptop yada yada. With a wife and 2 kids I need to be able to watch them or sit in the front room. Plus sometimes going out back to have a beer and maybe a cigar are nice while gaming. Thats just me though...
-
Me too! Headed to Phase 2!!
-
How long does it take to go through the phases? My wife's parents are pretty excited as well. Their desktop died so I am just going to give them my old one.

Well everything had been backordered for a long while for the resellers because of the SB recall. Now, at this time of writing, it will take you a little over 2 weeks to do everything. When under normal operation, some resellers can get the machine to you in under 10 business days from the time you click the "buy" button.
Mr. Mysterious -
I've been on phase 2 for about 10 days so far and no word back regarding tracking numbers

Considering the popularity of the new Sager laptops and XoticPC's small operation size, I'm sure they're pretty full up on orders right now, but are working on yours. Send them an email (or just PM Justin here) asking them what's going on.
Mr. Mysterious -
Oh yeah, I know that. I'm just giving the above posters a feel for how long they might be on phase 2. I ordered my laptop Jan 7th (or 17th, I forget haha).
-
How snugly does the power cord fit? Coming from the M860TU, a plug that doesn't come out of the machine easily is a priority, for me.
-
There, I just ordered my NP8170 with XoticPC
i7-2820QM, 2.3-3.4GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache)
Display: 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" w/ 90% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)
Singel nVidia GeForce GTX 485M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
16384MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (4 SODIMMS)
1x 120GB Intel 510 Series Solid State Drive (SSD2 Serial-ATA III)
2x 750GB 7200rpm (no internal DVD/CDrom, but a USB one)
Intel 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
And a Spare AC Adapter: Sager NP8170 Spare 220Watt AC Adapter
I will be running mostly virtual machines on this laptop and have the odd game of Civilization V.
Happy Happy Joy Joy -
good point. having a mobile gaming rig almost allows a user to be sociable while gaming lol
i have to have a laptop for collge. while i suppose i could have a desktop rig in my dorm room, there's already not enough room as it is. plus, i'd like to be able to pop up crysis or sc2 on max settings during a boring lecture
-
I wish i could find you guys the topic, this guy was going off on me calling me a f'n idiot for buying garbage and that i wasn't a REAL PC gamer cause i wouldn't be running crysis at 1080p with 32x AA and 100+ fps.
I'm like, dude chill out i'm perfectly find playing crysis at 900p above 30 fps it wont affect my enjoyment, and i knew what i was purchasing and why i'm purchasing it....for room to room portability. After awhile i had to just ignore the guy he was so ignorant...ahhh elitists. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
...........yeah I'd give it 2 years (which is a long time in the PC world) before the manufacturers come out with a laptop card that will be able to run crysis at those settings...
How unrealistic are some desktop guys?
Mr. Mysterious -
They are like some of the meatheads in high school who now serve us food...
-
It is their loss. I still use an old Dual Core desktop for general tasks and the amount of space it takes up with the wires, big box, screen, keyboard, speakers and everything else is quite a lot but I am too lazy to do anything about it. It also accumulates more dust too.
I think you will be able to play Crysis at 1080p by the way
-
Notebookcheck says the 485m runs it at 1080p on very high at 22 fps so prolly not if i want very high settings. Though i will be tweaking it a lot. I can't even see the difference between high and very high textures, or medium to very high shadows. So i would prolly enjoy it at a mix of medium to very high at 1080p
-
I ordered mine in January. I got an email about a week and half ago that the laptop shipped from Sager. XoticPC got my laptop last monday. I know have my new laptop
My guess though would be anywhere from 2-3 weeks right now. Sager just started shipping these laptops out again and come April time, they should be at the point where they can get them out pretty fast.
Just remember, all resellers go through Sager, so that's why it may take a little bit. -
I agree, like buying a car, its old when you buy it. I am excited for what I ordered. With rendering, I went with the 2820 with the big cache, the GTX485 because I MUST have nVidia because I have never had a problem with any game. Also, for rendering, nVidia is better because of the CUDA cores. ATI sort of fakes the CUDA cores (shaders) and it does not work as well. I have the G73 now and do not like the ATI card, just not my cup o tea. It just seems more prone to lockups in certain games and I look forward to being back in the nVidia family.
-
I was told today by XoticPC maybe 2-3 weeks. I ordered 3/11. I wanted the matte but there is no ETA for that screen. So I switched to the 90% gamut screen for photography and CGI
-
They told me 2-3 weeks twice in a row for 2 weeks...i think they are telling everyone that.
-
Ive been on phase 3 for over a week now.
-
I think you'll appreciate the larger gamut; I don't know what you render, but if you are modeling real world stuff, the larger gamut should help in "eyeballing" material matching. I know that's a big part of why I went with the 90% screen.
