An update on the display/hardware temp issues I was having:
I'm not sure if anyone was following my posts, and I have dropped the ball on this forum for the past few weeks... but I recently sent my computer in to sager to fix a display issue that I was having. They said they re-secured the lcd cable and shipped it back to me, but it turned out that didn't do anything. over the past week or so I have been on the phone with them and am sending the computer back Monday so hopefully they can do something this time, but im not holding my breath.
First off the tech support has been lousy saying they would call me back and never did... 3 times! But enough about tech supportim sure they really do have alot going on, but then again who knows?
my temp for the gpu has been idling around 63c without the fans in overdrive and 54c with the fans at max.
Anyone know what the hell is going on with my (what I once thought to be epic) machine?
IF they fix it this time and it works it might help my view on their company, but for now I'm disappointed with the support I have gotten.

Hey guys,
I'm happy to own a brand-new NP8170 (shipped to Korea - the sales guy was very helpful). The laptop is excellent, runs every game I've ever played on full resolution with 8x AA fluently, and is about ten times faster than my MBP from last year.
I was just wondering if you guys also had an issue where the indicator lights (on the top right) were slightly misaligned with the signs above - it seems from the pictures on Google that every laptop is slightly different here. Any thoughts? -
I have one from Eurocom, and it's exactly alligned.
-
If you get a chance, upload a picture of it so we can compare
-
I wonder if this is another issue connected with hibernation? (there are several posts discussing that the fans come on full blast when waking from hibernate, and will not shut off without reboot).
I'll say it again, I've only had BAD experience with the hibernate function of windows, both in my alienware using vista ultimate 64, and with my custom windows home prem 64 machine (phenom quad-core), and so I am forced to wonder if it our machines, or really Windows 64 bit hibernation that is the actual culprit.
Anybody else care to speak up on hibernation 'glitches' or weirdness they have noticed on any type of machine? Might help to compare notes and maybe get to the real root. -
That does suck, you experienced some ball-dropping of your own from the services tech, NOTHING more aggravating than waiting for someone to follow through on their word, and to have them not. Then repeating it again twice more?? That will not earn them rep points....
However re the actual display issue: Owning and working in an automotive repair garage, we often have vehicles like that, that will not act up while in the shop despite testing on premises, and then show their issues the day after the owner drives it home.
I don't know if that was the case here, that they did testing before they sent it back to you, or didn't, but I assume they would. If it was the cable, I wonder if shipping shifted it again? If not, I feel your pain of the absent computer - hopefully they will uncover whatever the trouble was. -
I don't have a camera at the moment, but it's about a millimeter to the right in my case. Not really a big deal by any measure, just some 'new stuff OCD' that I'll get over in two days
For comparison though: http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1821/np8170glamourscreentopd.jpg (slightly to the left if you blow it up)
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2977/np8170sphere.jpg (also slightly to the left)
And another question for those of us using 6990M - are you guys able to install the newest driver (11.8) from the AMD site? It seems to say that the driver is incompatible, at least for now, and wouldn't even support manual installation. Strangely, the Catalyst Control Center for 11.8 installs and runs perfectly. -
I just received my Clevo p170hm3 and after a few minute of testing I found that the screen is very very very hot is this normal or not?
-
not for me...
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
No this is NOT normal at all. Please check with your dealer or reseller for your options.
_ -
is what I have to return it to the reseller ?
-
what it did is not related to the 3D screen?
-
Well all that talk about the 120hz panel, is it really possible to somehow take the Clevo P170HM and use it? with some tweaking of cables and stuff!
I dont care about the 3D, i just want the 2 ms and 120 hz
because that is very noticeable in actionpacked 1st person shooters with a lot of movement

I have 2 questions ,first how do i install ram,I have 2 4gb sticks i would like to put in?Second I am having a problem installing adobe flash. When i try to install it my spyware doctor pops up and says it is deleting itself?any ideas?thank you.I have a an np8170.
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
How much RAM did your machine come with? If you ordered it with 2x4GB sticks, then the slots on the bottom of the machine should be empty. However, if you ordered 8GB with 4x2GB you won't have any free slots, so you'll have to pull out RAM. Either way, the easiest slots to get to (and that should be empty if you only have two sticks) require you to take out the four screws on the component bay on the bottom of the laptop and remove that large cover. There should be two RAM slots under it to use.
As for your flash problem, I've never heard of spyware doctor, but it sounds like it's a false positive. You may need to disable or remove it to allow adobe to install. -
I was running some benchmarks on the new rig today, and noticed something strange: the CPU multiplier seems to be locked at 8, no matter what I do with my computer. It works properly and throttles if I set the multiplier upper bound manually using ThrottleStop, even after closing the program, but upon reboot it will throttle to 800MHz promptly.
I've emailed Sager about this, but in the meantime, could someone check to see if they have this problem? You can get ThrottleStop here( http://www.techinferno.com/downloads/) and see if the multiplier's stuck. There's the exact same issue in Lenovo W520 laptops - it could be cleared using a CMOS reset, but the CMOS battery for the 8170 is rather difficult to reach.
For reference, I'm using a 2820QM with a 6990M. -
Mine got stuck at 798.2MHz before. It was resolved by turning it off, removing the battery and power, then holding the power button down for 10 or so seconds.
-
I've tried it already, to no avail
- I also tried removing the CPU, powering the laptop on and off, and re-installing it along with installing the latest chipset drivers from Intel.
Apparently (from Google) it likely has to do with the maximum power usage allowed by the BIOS (I have the BIOS from about two weeks ago, so IDK if it would be reproducible). -
Or the CPU is just DOA.
-
ah yes, the hard reset. THat was always the last resort in my phone-tech days, take out the battery, unplug, press and hold the power button to drain the last charge out of the laptop
It was surprising how many times that actually worked to get a computer to boot up again, besides solving a plethora of other issues!
-
It wasn't DOA - I think it started happening when I ran it on battery and plugged the AC adapter back in. I think I'll try the hard reset with the CMOS battery removed, even though this looks rather difficult.
EDIT: I did do this, and even when the BIOS time was reset, the processor continued to operate at a solid 800MHz - I'm guessing that the power management settings in the Catalyst 11.8 beta drivers conflicted with SpeedStep.
RE-EDIT: ....it was a software issue from the power management utility included by Sager (I was stupid enough to put it on Energy Star for battery testing and not put it back on performance). Talk about taking the long way around
-
What sort of utility? Sager didn't give me one.
Would you mind uploading a copy of it? -
He's talking about the Hotkey utility, if you double click on it in the tray you will see different power conservation modes.
-
Huh, I didn't know about that. What's weird is that it's power modes are independent of Windows battery settings.
-
Yea, the hotkey program actually controls the EC profile, so its an odd combination of Clevo software not interfacing with windows in a normal way
-
ok my 8690 decided to give up on me, and im thinking to get 8170 to replace it.
the matter screen option is only for nvidia gpu, if i get ati 6990m, cant this option available for me?? will 2720qm good enough? will be using it for some photo editing and occasionally some gaming
-
Well the reason why they have blocked the 120hz/2ms matte panel when choosing the AMD 6990M card, is because the card doesn't support the "3D" part of the panel.
You might be able to get this panel if you contact Sager, and tell them that you dont want 3D (if thats the case) and you just want the insanely fast responsetimes and sharpness from it.
Because i think the panel works fine with the AMD card, if you aren't gonna use it for 3D stuff anyway!
2720QM is the CPU that i have in mine, and it performs very very fast.... the performance in games and other stuff is just amazing, it will more than fullfill your needs. -
I've contacted them about this before - apparently they don't ship it like that.
On another note, is it normal for the computer to crash when I run games on battery without any power saving features? Seems like the battery couldn't handle the power required. -
Ok, I thought I would ask this since people are having cpu's stuck.
Mine is idling at 798mhz and it bumps to 2.6-2.8mhz when I start processes, is this how it should work ? -
hmmm.. so if i go with amd, there is no way i can get that matte screen eh
o well still deciding whether should i bite my tongue and just go with 580m XD
nevertheless, this laptop do not have the express card slot i believe right?? -
Pretty sure you can get the 120Hz matte screen with the Radeon 6990.
-
Or perhaps you should go and buy from another place than Sager Notebooks, if they arent willing to go a little bit away from their standard configurations to make a customer very happy... cant see why they should make that a problem, if it makes a customer happy and gives them a good order! - strange ppl -
-
hmm.. now im in dilemma, good friend of mine asked me to invest on desktop instead of laptop, since what he said make sense.
with the config im going for 8170, i could get myself a darn good desktop pc, not to mention equipped with gtx 580 or maybe gtx590... arghh why must he said that to me... -
For what are you gonna use it? are you gonna sit a lot of local LANs with friends and play games and such? if you need to move around your computer a lot
then focus on the laptop instead
-
I use mine (specs below) with Adobe CS 5.5 apps and they all run quite well. There is a work around to get Premiere Pro to utilize a "non-supported" GPU, which I have done and that works just fine too. For Photoshop use you will be quite pleased with the rendering speeds. If you are using another photo editing app, I feel thus: if it runs Photoshop (which now is running as a 64 bit app) well, it should run the rest of them OK
-
Personally, I need, er....like, to be able to move around the house and not be tied to the spot where the technology sits. You can spec out a screamer desktop for the price of one of these laptops, but as I consider mine a "desktop replacement" that MOVES, I am happy that I got it, big time!

I now have my Satori (arrived via UPS around 10:30am) and am loving it so far. Loaded up Win7 here at work and and doing the updates and whatnot (work network is sloooow).
2 questions:
-How do I get the model number of my screen? Device manager just reports Generic PnP Monitor.
-As reported by others, the sound is kind of tinny coming out of the speakers. I have the latest Realtek drives and actived THX. Any ideas on fixing this? -
1. device manager / hardware ID or run everest home edition (freeware)
2. Try to push F5 + 5 -
Cool thanks! It is indeed the Hannstar HSD06A5 (HSD173PUW1) and it looks great. Perhaps ignorance truly is bliss; not knowing what those 72% and 92% gamut screens look like, this Hannstar looks fine.
-
Ya, I love my Satori too. You can get the model number of your display and a whole lot of other data using: HWInfo
HWiNFO64 Download -
Quick question, which driver do i choose for wireless?
Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN Driver version 1005.24.0712.2011 | 7/12/11
or
Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N Wireless LAN Driver version 6.1.0.183| 7/15/11 -
The wireless driver would depend on what you went with when you ordered your laptop.
Speaking of monitors, does anyone know if it's possible to force the LCD to refresh at 70Hz? According to AIDA64 the panel supports 70Hz at 1920x1080, but I can't choose it. -
I didn't know the Fn + 5 thing - it sounds MUCH better than switching to 5.1 channels on Realtek
(but it seems to kill the center channel and the subwoofer - compared to 5.1 channels on Realtek with the center disabled + THX on surround, Fn + 5 sounds like it's stereo on four speakers, without the 1.1 channels.) -
Has the data sheet on the 120Hz screen surfaced yet?
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Yes, many are liking this screen! It is great for a stock display...

Hey everybody
I'm new to this forum and wanted to greet all fellow P170HM Owners
I'm also very pleased with the Hannstar Display, only downside is a slightly bright line on the top of the screen, but I guess its normal with LCD Screens
Some thoughts about the Graphics Card:
I got a new P170HM with a GTX 580m.
Idle at around 38°C - 39°C
F.E.A.R. 3 -- 1980x1080 everything on max settings
Load 75°C everything without Fn + 1
I guess so far so good.

hi guys, how many of you guys actually go with 580m instead of 6990m? differences is like 8%-10% improvement but paid almost twice the price for the gpu.
and if you do go with 580m, do you get the the matte 3d screen too?? -
You have to still pay for the upgraded matte 3d screen.

Well looks like my colleagues in my company are really enjoying the specs of the Sager NP8150/NP8170. They made a purchase order for 8 laptops with XoticPC in the past two week.
