Yay! Just gotine this morning. Got delivered to work. The wait now is agonizing!
Question about laptop coolers.... Just how much do they cool by. I've heaps of"it's really good, keeps my laptop cool" but I want some hard facts. So if anyone could specify their exact spec notebook, cooler make and model, with with and without temps thatd be great. Back it up with screen shots and you'll be rewarded with many internets!

Guys I need help. I tried swapping the hdd from primary into secondary but there's this plastic thing with thin foam pads on the bottom, screwed into the hdd. I tried unscrewing it and removing it but one screw is really hard and making me think something's amiss. But with the screws and plastic, the hdd doesn't fit in the caddy that sits under the DVD. And that's there for a reason... What to do?
-
The plastic is there to cushion the primary drive in its bay. Use that plastic with your newer primary drive instead of including it with your secondary bay.
-
What lamp said.
Of note, neither the primary or secondary hard drives themselves get screwed to anything. For the primary, put the plastic sleeve around the drive and attach the drive to the connector. For the secondary, remove the optical and then the metal hard drive sleeve (should be 3 screws). Put the drive in the sleeve, put it in the bay and slide it into the connector, refasten the 3 screws, and then slide the optical back. -
Is it true that the summer promo for Clevo P170HM $100 off is over?
-
How much does a stock AMD Radeon 6990M cost, if i were to buy it from a vendor? for my Clevo P170HM as a sparepart?
-
Idk where you're looking, but Sager still has the $100 sale, and MALIBAL with their $125 sale.
-
This is no topic reply at all, except to say, it is great to have a place to go where people are knowledgeable and experienced with the 8170/170, and when you ask a question, it is generally answered the same day! Notebook Review forums and its members rock.
-
The 6990M is $490 from RJTech.
-
Reflexnotebook emailed me this morning. But gladly other resellers still have theirs

Check with a Reseller for the BEST deal. You just never know...

Thanks Lamp, daboosh, rpg;
I figured as much, it just that one of the sleeve screws were on so tight that it me made me second guess if i was doing it right...
Apparently not:
JMicron JMC25x Gigabit ethernet controller
PXE-E61: Media test failed 1.0.9.0 check cable
PXE-MOF Exiting PXE Rom
The ODD, HDD, SSD are all detected and present in BIOS. ODD is set to primary boot drive. Ethernet is 10th on the list of boot devices. WTH man...
I forgot the check if there are master/slave jumpers....do they still do this (it's been a while since playing with HDD's). Also tried F7 to select boot device, chose TSSTCorp....no dice....
I'm trying to boot from DVD to update SSD firmware, then install Win 7
GRRR! -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
If you aren't able to boot from the optical drive with F7, then it sounds like you don't have a working disk. Can you boot from that disk in another machine? It could be damaged or otherwise not bootable. You can also see if your Windows DVD boots up with F7 as well.
And no, modern SATA drives don't have jumpers to bother with. -
Ah you mean the actual DVD with firmware update. Yeh that's a possibility. I thought you were saying all 3 drives are buggered lol. I tried win7 too but I'm using a back up disk I made. Maybe it too is buggered. I'll make a bootable USB. At work now tho.
And as animatrix was saying. This forum, thread and users are awesome. Thanks guys. Rep points for you all (when I figure out how)! -
Hi guys... Its been awhile...
I tried to install some linux distros on our laptop, but it just can't boot almost any of them.
I've tried Fedora, Mandriva, Mint, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The only one I could install 100% was Ubuntu, but it doesnt appear to be 100% stable.
Any of you have experience on linux? -
Hey guys,
Im getting BSOD's every once in awhile. I have all the latest drivers and tried just about everything i could think of to troubleshoot this.
Here are the Critical errors in my event viewer.
Is anybody else having this problem. I thought maybe my PSU was bad or not putting out enough power

Im thinking about driving it over to Sager. I just wanted to check with you peeps in the forum first
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
did you try posting in the "windows" thread in NBR?
Mr. Mysterious -
Hey, I have used the latest Linux Mint, Ubuntu and OpenSuSe. OpenSuSe would not see my Intel 6230 wireless, ubuntu would run flawlessly as would Mint. I have run just about everything in VMware Workstation. With VMware there is no acceleration for the video card. What video card do you have? My 8170 is dated about March and I have not updated any hardware. Also have used USB sticks with Linux on it for when I need instant internet.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Sager will probably want to rule out a possible Windows problem first before checking the hardware. Did you buy it direct from Sager?
_ -
I bought it used off a guy
-
Radeon 6970.
Im trying to install it, not to use with VM.
I have tried all versions (USB, LiveCD, LiveDVD, FullDVD...) of OpenSUSE, Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva.
All of them freezes during installatin boot or LiveCD boot, except for Ubuntu.
I'm almost giving up of linux on this laptop :/
Do you have any advise for me? -
I just order from Malibal

Hurray for no TAX!
I been using my work ThinkPad i5 for years.
This new laptop cost me nearly 3G but I can't wait to see the different!
I just don't have time to enjoy my console at home.
I haven't been an advent PC gamer since my AMD 6000+ back in high school.
Although I do keep up with PC from time to time.
-
Very nice system, Bsan - yes, we do not charge tax to California customers and we can deliver laptops there in 1-2 days. Please PM us if you ever need anything.
-
I had my doubts till I saw this forums.
Then seeing how you guys are active in this community
Not to mention some of the comments of your customer.
So I felt compel to buy only from you!
I'am 100% sure to put up video/pix as soon as I get my hand on it!
I will be PM if I have any question! Thanks! -
You need at least 5 posts to PM - so if you can't PM - that's why. Also, we look forward to the review!
-
Oh I see, I was about to PM you
to see if I should switch to 485m or 580m
Since I do a little video editing on Adobe Master CS5. Be nice if I could use those CUDA core?
Does ATI 6990m would help with video-editing as well?
The 6990m is such a great value for it charge and base on notebookcheck
and tomshardware it does very well in games.
I hope to call you during business hour so we can figure something out
Or PM once I have it.
Also for the Laptop screen, is the AUO 90% really that much better than the stock? My friend beg me to get the glossy upgrade. -
So i burnt the disk again and no dice. Wont boot on neither laptop. So i redownloaded the firmware off crucial and tried again. Nothing. So i'm using USB Stick...Crucial Loads, then says Cannot find kernel memdisk. Did it again several times. Nothing.
I friggen bought a Crucial for reliability for crying out loud.
Now i read someone had a similar problem on a HP. Seems like DVD driver was at fault...I may install windows first, then see what happens... -
Looks like burning software issue...I used 'imgburn' and it worked perfectly.
Tried with magicISO, ultraISO and it didnt work. Now for win7...
While im on the topic...balls to CPUID HWMonitor for forcing users to install Ask! toolbar...seriously man -
Is that something new? I installed CPUID 3 weeks ago and it was an option - just unchecked the boxes and no ASK toolbar.
-
This happened to me on Saturday. I too unchecked the boxes but it came up somehow...Hate that.
I'm using my new P170HM!
Turns out the DVD's i burnt just didn't burn right...several times....anyways....
I'm blown away by the machine; its a beast! Boots and loads so fast with SSD. I haven't been able to game yet, but i'm expecting great things. Thanks to everyone that got me to this point. -
Dude, you are going to love that thing. If I may suggest..... consider going to the full 16GB after your credit card recovers from the heat.
ENJOY! -
I video edit on mine, and there is a hack to perform to get Adobe Premiere Pro to "see" your video card. Then all those CUDA cores are @ your disposal. I will dig into my files and post the hack (a simple text edit) asap. I am using CS5.5 and it works beautifully.
-
OK, instead of writing out all the steps from my notes, here is a link to the process of hacking the text file so that your nVidia card will be able to bring all those CUDA cores (I love saying that) online for Premiere Pro:
Hacking Adobe Premiere CS5 to enable more nVidia CUDA cards | KRAMA i.news - blog.krama.tv -
I did a comparison after the "hack". No difference to speak of in time rendered with Adobe Premiere
WakonTonka: did you notice a difference in render times? -
after 4 botched attempts (credit card companies fault-ish) i now have a Malibal on the way... thanks malibal #1 and #2
-
I don't really get the buzz with CUDA... arn't your run of the mill i7's already fast enough to encode everything? I know I just encoded a 50GB AVI into H264 mp4 form in ~10 minutes... and I have absolutely no gfx card acceleration.
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
An i7 may be fast, but it can't compete with the massive parallel processing in graphics cards. This article shows a great comparison of GPU acceleration versus CPU for Bitcoin mining. (It's not the same thing, but the point remains that you can get a huge boost by offloading to the GPU)
HARDOCP - Introduction - Bitcoin Mining GPU Performance Comparison -
I get real time effects. I have not taken the time to run timed tests, so I have nothing to post showing the acceleration. When I did this hack on a previous laptop I ran a canned test that auto-reported the results to a database on a webpage, and my data showed a definite processing boost. That GPU had only 48 CUDA cores, IMS. The proc was an i7, although not Sandy Bridge. So yeah, the new (well not anymore is it?) processor I am using is faster than my last one
It is funny how not into testing for data I am these days. I just drive the thing and it works quickly. Sorry though that I cannot give data, could my seat-of-the-pants impressions be incorrect? Maybe, but..... If I can find that auto reporting app again, I will unhack the text file, and get some results to report. I appreciate all the other posters who constantly report temps and stuff, I guess I could pitch in, eh? -
"Zacktly", I don't do benchies anymore, I just plain use her and abuse her (she likes it that way). The only thing I have running is a widget that shows nVidia temps.
I did do a cool thing tonight tho. I put in a 640GB HD into it and loaded Linux Mint into a 100gb partition and the rest went into a NTFS partition for when I get my ODD adapter. Was going to boot into it. Did not work. When I put the original C drive back in and the put the "Linux" 640GB HD in the D drive spot, it would not boot. Linux did not like to be moved from its original hard drive spot. So, When I put original C and D drives back in, I no longer need to use the finger password input. So COOL! Been trying to get rid of that login for awhile. -
Just wondering if CPUid is showing my RAM right...Says DRAM Frequency 665.2MHz.. Shouldn't this be 1333?
Also, is there a way of checking that my SSD is performing optimally? Its got 7.9 on Windows Experience Index, but i want to be a little more thorough.
P.S. I'm loving my laptop. What a cracker! Was playing SC2 on ultra graphics with 60fps...mind you this is on 1372X752 (or something). My monitor...a Samsung series 4 22" LCD that came bonus with my 48" doesn't like HDMI cables...Puts a green tone over everything when connected to the laptop...was red on my Acer so I know the laptops aren't the problem... -
It's showing the correct value... You have to take the 665.2 and multiply by 2 since it is DDR (double data rate) RAM. 665.2 x 2 = 1330.4 Also, software reports always slightly vary, plus or minus, from the BIOS readings. So don't worry about it not being exactly 1333... =)
-
I thought it might be something like that.
Ran a benchmark on 3dVantage. Got : P9718 3D Marks, Graphics Score 8473, and CPU Score 17371, with 26 and 23 fps on Jane Nash and New Calico. From memory this is pretty much on par with other machines of the same spec yeh? Either way...love it! -
I'd be interested to see this, I'm currently with CS4 but going to CS5 next year with my advanced character animation course.
Also intend to get me that other 8 GBs of ram when I have a few bucks.
Edit - I saw the link for the hack in a later post - thankyou! -
You're welcome! Like you, I sometimes post as I read something, then wouldn't you know it-the very next post contains something that would have changed what you posted.
BTW, try the hack while still using CS4. All it does is put your GPU in the list of cards that Premiere Pro is "allowed" to use for GPU acceleration (the "Mercury Playback Engine") -
Does anybody know where I can get one of these ASAP with the Dead Pixel Warranty? XOTICPC is a no go.
