I wanted some small speakers that I could plug in that sounded pretty good. I was at Walmart and found these. They sound really good and the were only $15

Anyone know how the 6990M and/or 580M compare with the 485M temperature-wise? I'm having continuing overheating issues with my 485M, just wondering if any similar-performance alternatives ran any cooler.
-
Mine runs awesome, about 40-45C idling temp
-
I'm similar when idling, but when playing something like Dota 2 or running furmark I pretty quickly get to around 100C, and have a couple cases where my laptop has powered down that I suspect were due to overheating. This is with Fn+1 fans and the back of my notebook propped up an additional inch or so on a hard surface.
I'm talking to Malibal support about it (they respond quickly even on a Saturday!) and trying to figure out what my options are...I'd rather not RMA and be without a computer for a week+, if at all possible. -
Did it always overheat? Have you cleaned out the fans? Have you tried changing the thermal compound?
-
It's gotten worse, I think. When I originally got it last spring it ran hot but I never paid that much attention to temps and it never powered itself off. The heatsink assembly is clean, and I've reapplied ICD7 a couple times now without it making any difference. I'm kind of out of things to try, but hopefully the good folks at Malibal can figure something out. Worst comes to worst, I RMA it back for repairs and hopefully they can fix it up.
-
Fixed! Not quite enough paste on the GPU, and the fan itself had gotten a bit gunked up with dust. I took no mercy on it with the vacuum, and my temps top out at 88C now after 10 minutes with furmark -- and 74C if I force the fans to high!

Thank you for that! Excellent temps for furmark!
Yes it is a good practice to clean the fans and vents every couple to 3 months.

Here are the temps running Vue 10 from E-on Software. Rendering 1920x1080 picture with all cores maxed out at 100% and using some of the GPU..

Hey guys... I'm "this" close to ordering (today as long as I feel "content" with it) either the Clevo P170HM/Sager NP8170 or the MSI GT783/Whitebook.
How do you all rate the build quality on the scale of 1-10 on the Sager/Clevo? Sturdy? Feel like it will last? -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Build quality can really only be appreciated once in hand. I would say Sager has top of the line build quality at rate it 9/10
-
Wait, what gets 10/10?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Panasonic Toughbooks, they can take a bullet!
-
Ah, gotta concede to that one!
-
I've got to agree with Hutsady, Sager builds a really solid laptop.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
I have been working with the Sager-Clevo models since 1996, they rate high on the quality scale in my book...

Before buying, I'd at least check into the complaints about the MSI's keyboards.
But for me, the 'Warranty Void If Broken' sticker that's stuck to the bottom of their machines is an absolute deal breaker. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
@Kevin,
You should ask in the MSI forum whether that sticker is ever enforced in the US. -
Hey does anyone from xotic have any pictures of the notebook with the carbon or matte black finish
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
We do have pics up of the carbon fiber mod but not on that particular model. You can find the link on our site or you can PM me for a direct link -
Do you do mods for different machines as well on request, or do you only mod the machines you actually sell?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Because of liability reasons we are only able to do the mods on computers originally purchased for us. -
Where can I buy a motherboard to P170HM?
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
First I would try your dealer or reseller. If no success then call Sager at (800) 741-2219. They most likely have them in stock for sale.
_ -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Actually, Sager will not sell a motherboard unless you send them your unit and have them install it for you. They won't even sell them to 3rd party extended warranty companies.
-
Thx, There is no person on the forum (as previously pkhetan) that has access to spare parts?
-
Hey guys, any thoughts/opinions on the v4 90% Gamut Glossy Screen? I opted for it on my Satori, haven't seen too much info floating about. I know AUO makes some great screens, so hopefully I'll be in for a treat.
Still wish I would have opted for the 580M over 6990M for some reason. I don't know if it's nVidia personal preference, or what. -
Beautiful. Radiant. Marvelous. Worth every penny.
Oh and one can't forget that it's BRIGHT. Watch out for eye strain at full brightness. -
PM BabyHemi and maybe he can help you
-
Agreed! Its the display of choice for me. I do photography and 3D landscaping. I use the Viewguard Matte Screen Protector and it seems to enhance the colors. There is also minimal reflection.
-
x2, Its the first time I a monitor I cant have the brightness at max, and the Colors are amazing.
-
I have to say, even though I swapped my original stock screen out, I'm really, really glad that the Clevo resellers are offering these high-quality screens. Makes me confident about upgrading when Haswell comes out next year.
-
Hey, just got a Sager 8170 with the 3d screen. Was wondering if anyone knew why when I turn my computer on sometimes that the lights will come on and then the screen stays blank? I thought it wasn't even booting up, until I pressed enter and heard the audio from logging into windows, meaning the display just wasnt activated.
What's even weirder, after pressing FN+F2 (figuring something with the LCD was wrong) -- my computer screen went blank, and then it hard restarted -- asking me if I wanted to run in safe mode because of the crash. -
Ouch, that doesn't sound right.
Have you contacted your reseller about this? -
No, I haven't contacted them yet. I'll do that now. Figured I'd ask here first though
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
Have you tried hooking up an external display at all? If you try that and it works normally, your internal display ribbon cable to the screen may have come loose. If that doesn't help it, then it's possibly a GPU problem. -
I've contacted support but they haven't got back to me yet. I did not try hooking it up to an external display, because this problem happens too randomly. It doesn't happen every time, but I have noticed it happen at least 3 times since I got it.
-
Who is Haswell ... is that the place next to Roswell !?!?!
-
Hahaha, no, it's next year's Intel chipset.
-
I recently repasted my GPU and CPU with artic MX-4.
Woww what a great difference!!
Artic silver 5:
GPU: temps during BF3 = max 95°c
CPU: Prime95 = max 74°c
Artic MX-4
GPU: Temps druing BF3 = max 77-79° "1080p high-ultra settings'
CPU: Prime95 max= 64°
I thing its time to overclock my good old GTX 485
-
Are you kidding !?!?!? Wow, I am worried about the high temps in the summer time hear in eastern southern California. How hard is it to re-paste. I have never done that. I have applied paste to an old desktop AMD chip a long time ago. Anybody have a video of re-pasting. With a room temp right now at 22C, my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is at 95C. My room temp can hit 35C in the summer time. I am thinking of getting some kind of room cooler this summer.
-
it went fairly easy,
First you remove the cooling fans.
with the CPU, you must unscrew 4 screws - then remove the heatsink.
Repeat for the GPU, the heatsink for the video memory should not be removed!
Make the CPU and GPU with a clean cloth do the same with the heatsink.
Applying the MX 4pasta was very easy! easier than removing the AS5 paste.
The first months I had the AS5paste pretty good temperatures, but after heavy use these values were getting worse.
By the way I'm looking for a better screen for my Clevo p170hm, I currently have the stock screen!!! isy not that bad but far from good! -
By stock screen, I believe you are referring to the Glossy LCD display? What seems to be the issue with it? Sager or your reseller might be able to assist you in purchasing an upgraded display. Being that the NP8170/p170hm is still being sold currently I don't believe there would be an issue obtaining one.

I have a question:
Is the air flow weaker on the left back vent of your laptops (CPU side?) when compared to the right vent (GPU side)?
After hitting Fn + 1 (the command to kick up fans to their maximum speed), I noticed that the air flow out of the left hand side (CPU side) was very low, no where near as high as the right hand side (GPU side). Is that normal?
After running Prime95 for 15 minutes with Fn + 1, there was still a major difference in air output between the left and right sides (left still with much lower output, but much hotter air/ Max CPU temp was around 83 degrees celcius). -
You can't beat the 90% screen. I am not sure of the V number, maybe the v4, ah here it is, AUO B173HW01 V4.
-
Had my laptop for 8 months now, thought I would get around to repasting.
Is there a guide somewhere on repasting for our machines ?
I'm guessing you repaste gpu and cpu at the same time , any preference to certain products over the other ? -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
It depends on what you want to use to repaste. Here's a link to the service manual for the laptop with instructions on how to open it up and get to the CPU/GPU: (thanks to Theriko)
P17xHM_ESM.zip
Depending on the paste you use, they have different instructions:
Arctic Silver: Arctic Silver, Inc. - Instructions
IC Diamond: Application -
Thank you, the link helps a lot.
Just wanna double check, as I did cpu's repaste many times, but never on gpu, in the picture before I repaste the cpu and gpu, and gpu being under the heatsink on the left ?
And I apply paste right here ? Because in this picture it does not show the messy paste like on cpu when you take heatsink off.

Yes in the center of the die as seen in the picture below...
