um yeah, thats cuz the 17" does indeed have the same internal specs as the 15"aside from no 3k/4k display option and no 3G/4G capability the specs are exactly the same (aside from the dimensions, of course)

still, they still use feedbacks, I mean the SE version is proposed with a 180W adapter for many ressellers now. So who knows ? Wait until they officially reveal the commercial version.
It's stated that the 980M chassis will support the 4980HQ so i guess that for a 4710HQ it'll be even cooler than in the SE
! So i guess we will indeed have a larger fan/vent
-
Very nice laptop for what it costs.
Hey HT I know you did a review of the MSI GT72 how do fan profiles/fan noise compare?
Is the MSI not as noisy under load?
Waiting for the full HT review, they are the best.
Your reviews really make or break my buying decisions...lol
What is the 17" version called and what's the release date?
Is a 180W power adapter enough for a 980M if you upgrade?Ningyo likes this. -
Hmm, I see no DVD/CD Drive....what's going on with that?

moar space, moar performance, moar cooling, less old unnecessary tech

You can get some very slim external writers or have other options if you want an optical drive
-
I am glad they took to their senses, those flimsy optical drives is what makes every great laptop feel more cheap imo..
I can't find any external dvd burner for over 50$ and the BD for around 100$ so no loss for me, i only use it maybe once a month if i reinstall OS (from disc)Dabeer likes this. -

2nd the fan noise question. What is it like during normal browsing? Do the fans ramp up random like other Clevo models?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I have it on a corsair survivor 3 32GB and it's silly quick on a 4.3ghz hex core and an SSD ^-^
-
I've seen that, but I really hope the info is not accurate. It wouldn't make much sense to have the same internals, just in a larger case, especially when everyone is craving for longer battery run time.
-
YES! That is what I have been waiting for from Clevo. I'm sold!
-
How long have we been waiting for custom fan profiles on Clevos!
HT I read on TI that these newer Clevos also have a new function in the BIOS which keeps the dGPU link active once you finish using it.
This allows the usage/temperature to be monitored and thus GPU fans to be shut down, the negative being it uses extra battery to keep that link open.
Have you had any experience with this on the P650SE? -
I may still go with the 970m only because it won't get used much outside of work.. Plus that price is too awesome.
$1304.01 shipped? Sign me up! -
It's not too configurable but at least something.
Actually once an Optimus activated program shuts off, the dGPU shuts off. GPU-z shows '--' for speeds and '0C' for temps, in other words it shuts off pretty quickly.
Those spikes are from polling the GPU from hwmonitor for temps.
Yeah, I'm considering the 970m as well. It's 50-60% faster than even a heavily overclocked 860m, and runs a lot cooler too. Only the TN LCD needs to go. After using the quality screen of the W230SS a lot moving to this TN screen is hard to adjust to. 3K and 4k screens may be a good option for that, but I'm still not sold on the scaling. -
I'm planning on buying this from XoticPC. Do you guys think they'll do little discounts on Christmas/New Years? I honestly just want to buy this thing right now.
-
Are the viewing angles really bad or is it color saturation? How does it compare to the basic screens offered with the P150?
I may wait until late December and see if one of the resellers offers at least a higher gamut LCD screen. -
I assume the dGPU fans spin down and stop then?
That's what really annoyed me on my P150EM, I would have to go into the Nvidia control panel a number of times to get the fan to stop.
Also is the Clevo control panel fan adjustment purely for the CPU fan? -
why not? the same was the case with pretty much ALL P150/P170 models
ZOMG! this is like the holy grail of Clevo functionality! PURE AWESOMENESS! now clevo, please please please include that functionality in ALL models from now on. thank you!
PS: I love you

Are they planning on refreshing the Sager NP8268 line anytime soon? I would LOVE to have this fan control on that line of laptops!
-
From what I can tell, it's the temps for both fans. Like after a game, the GPU temps drop below 50 pretty quickly and I can hear the GPU fan stop, but CPU fan keeps running since it's still above 50C. But I'll test it a bit more and see if I can determine for certain.

Looks like the New Clevo specs are up , and preorders are up as well on some sites, not sure if I should start a thread for it or not till we get the Sager name?

i was also already thinking about opening an owner's lounge for the ZM series, since I'm preeeetty much set on cancelling my current order. but yeah, still wanna wait until i get a rough pricing range before i throw my cash in the hat

That i7-4790s may actually make that laptop not that much more power and heat than a high end i7 mobile.

The latest Hotkey for P150SM-A (2.34.55) is also offering fan speed control.tlprtr19 likes this.
-
I'm assuming it will need a new EC and/or BIOS?
-
Yes. The changelog for hotkey from clevo P15xSM-A/P17xSM-A driver page states; Hotkey AP (2.34.55) for Windows 8.1 64-bit version. (need to update BIOS to 1.03.03 or later, EC 1.03.03 (P15xSM-A)/1.03.04 (P17xSM-A) or later.
The new EC and BIOS can be found on Prema's site. -
That P751ZM is going to be well out of my price range, it seems. Starting price of $1700 is doable, but I don't like that base CPU.
-
This machine is so sexy that I'm considering the 980M version with 32GB RAM to mod as shared vRAM. *sigh*
-
Mod as shared vram?
-
prema said that if you buy a certain type of ram you can use it as shared vram
-
Lmao I searched the threads and finally found permas post by the time I got back to post it you guys already had it linked *facepalm*
-
I'll ask Prema how this will work. Will be curious to see how much control Prema has over this sort of thing in the BIOS.

I'm trying to wrap my head around this "UMA augmentation" v. "nominal DIME" configuration.
I.e., how does ...
- Discrete VRAM + UMA VRAM
Works "better" than ...
- DIscrete VRAM + DiME
UMA = Unified Memory Architecture, nominally for GPUs without Discrete VRAM, accessing like a CPU
DiME = Direct, in-Memory Execute, nominally for GPUs with Discrete VRAM to utilize RAM for textures and other, non-framebuffer store
DiME differs from DMA, Direct Memory Access (DMA), in that the GPU in this case can directly use system RAM via DiME. Normally, using DMA, the I/O processor (IOP) cannot directly use system RAM, only STO/LOAD its local DRAM, SRAM cache and/or registers (whatever is on-IC/on-card) to/from system RAM.
Hence why I wonder how UMA VRAM "augmentation," which I assume people are talking about here, benefits a GPU with Discrete VRAM that can already use system RAM via DiME for things like textures, which already provides an existing benefit over DMA.
Or when people say "shared VRAM" they actually mean DiME? -
Curious to see how it all shakes out.

HT any news on getting more than 60Hz out of those mDPs and whether either port is connected directly to the dGPU?
I'm dead set on this machine but it needs to be future proof for the Oculus Rift CV1.
Nothing above 60Hz and I will have to settle for the P750ZM. -
I like how you say "settle" for the P750ZM since it's a monster, stronger and probably more expensive than the P650SG ^^ !iaTa said: ↑HT any news on getting more than 60Hz out of those mDPs and whether either port is connected directly to the dGPU?

If they keep this up we might revive the d900 series

@iata: schenker website states that its compatible with the oculus rift, if that helps u any.
is that based on the bluemobility preorder or is there any other vendor yet?ericc191 said: ↑That P751ZM is going to be well out of my price range, it seems. Starting price of $1700 is doable, but I don't like that base CPU.Click to expand...
@lunap: isnt the ZM series a kind of revival of the d900? desktop cpu + single mxm?

So it does on the German site, thanks jaybee:
So looks like it's good to go, although the P750ZM would be the better option to remove that Optimus latency. Every little bit helps. Is the XMG P505 already compatible with the final / future version of the Oculus Rift?
Yes, the XMG P505 is fully compatible Oculus Rift. This is made possible primarily the DisplayPort connectors, which allow a resolution of 3840 * 2160 @ 60Hz. At lower resolutions, refresh rates even beyond 60Hz are possible. The technical data of the final Oculus Rift were not yet published, but currently is not expected that the product get a 4K panel. Often we are asked whether an additional latency caused by use of NVIDIA Optimus materialize. To do this we can provide the following data: At a resolution of Full-HD caused by Optimus additional latency is only 0,7ms. At a resolution of 4K, the additional latency is only 3ms. Since the Oculus Rift most likely a resolution less than 4K (3840 * 2160) is obtained, caused by Optimus additional latency will be under 3ms so and thus outside the audible range.Click to expand... -
Hello together,
I've seen a lot of reviews concerning the P650 SE (same as XMG P505 with GTX970M), however I couldn't find anywhere some pictures of the P650 SG (GTX980M). The chassis should be a little bit bigger and I'm quite interested if the cooling works as well with the GTX980M. Does anybody have seen a hands on / (p)review or anything like this with the 980 model? -

I do not now and have no hardware to test it. You might want to send the question to Sager and Clevo both or even Mythlogic and see what response you get.iaTa said: ↑HT any news on getting more than 60Hz out of those mDPs and whether either port is connected directly to the dGPU?

Lol that's what I said in my comment above xD to me it feels like they're attempting at the d900 revival which honestly was my FAVORITE series, had great legs to allow great airflow, proper venting, and everything else, I never had an issue w/ it, I"m planning on sending in my D900 in to sager eventually to get it fixed, course the huge form factor will never return since people won't need dual ODD's (which I thought was super cool back then for copying media and or loading multiple games ) however they could still make them to hold arrays etc lol. Either way I think they should honestly consider splitting up between thick and thin ( no pun intended ) since the possibility of getting WC in a laptop is becoming more and more possible these days.jaybee83 said: ↑@iata: schenker website states that its compatible with the oculus rift, if that helps u any.
