but the x3b only has 2 usb's and from the pics of the x3c on the .pdf file it seems to show 3 usbs and a different port configuration to the x4b or x4c??
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
The 15" machines have two USB 3.0 ports, and a USB 2.0 port. The 13.3" machines have one each.
-

I expect 3C to be the same as 3B (ie 2 x USB ports) while 4C should be the same as the 4B (ie 3 x USB ports).
I attach the relevant pages from the "C" User Guide.

For anyone who has still not decided which UB to buy: Notebookcheck.com just published news and pictures of the upcoming Asus Zenbook refresh. The pics show backlit keyboards and prices are expected to start at $1,100 for the 13" model, release date is June.
-
That's good news. Nice find, hope they have an i7 too.
-
holy crap 1080p on a 11.6"
that's too high IMO!
I had the original zenbook - i really wanted to love it, but the keyboard was utterly horrendous. it doesn't look like it's been 'refreshed' in the new model. -
here's another - looks like it's coming in juin!

Do you have a link? I am not seeing it at Notebook / Laptop Reviews and News - Notebookcheck.net -
-
Oooh, black keys on a silver body. I like that. But I could never handle that PPI (high resolution).
-
you need to give it a try. it's not that hard. with 11,6 ok, but 13.3 it's a piece of cake. or get new glasses
-
any idea why they would stick a GT620M into a machine with ivy bridge? Even a GT630 barely beats it.
-
With this resolution on either size screen -- forget the glasses, I'd need a microscope.
-
Why just a single DDR chip? The GPU will be totally gimped unless running in dual channel mode.
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The on-board 4GB RAM in my X3B runs as dual channel. I would assume that the arrangement in the X3C will be the same.
John -
Based on this: NP900X3C - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG
it states:
4GB DDR3 System Memory at 1,600MHz ( 4GB x 1, DDP Type)
What is DDP? Is that a typo supposed to be DDR? -
it may say its 1x4gb which technically it kind of is as its all soldered to a single board, in this case the motherboard itself, but its detected as dual channel and must be setup so from using cpuz etc to detect the RAM config within windows
this is from what i've seen in the X3B thread -
Gotcha, good to know. Thanks.
-
In France, cheap I must say!

8GB RAM configurations. Yum. And we know the 128GB mSATA drive is changeable. -
I thought the dual core Ivys weren't out yet?
-
Wow, just noticed 13.3" screen in a 12" chassis. Now THAT's what I like. I always thought there's way too much bezel in most machines.
And I'll order if I can talk to her

Physically the NP900X3C is identical to the NP900X3B which is already in circulation. See my review here. to say that it uses a 12" chassis Samsung must have found a 12" machine with extremely wide bezels. My NP900X3B is only fractionally narrower than the Toshiba R700 and is about 1.25" wider than the old 12.1" Toshiba R500.
Samsung's marketing claim that the 15" NP900X4* is in a 14" chassis is nearer the truth. However, in addition to avoiding wide bezels, Samsung are using a 15.0" panel instead of the standard 15.6".
John -
typical marketing smoke and mirrors
it matters not anyway, the things thin, light and sexy no matter how you look at it! anyway its not size that matters..........its what you do with it. ;-) -
Why would you need 8GB ram? AutoCAD or Photoshop? on 13" screen??
-
virtualisation primarily, i run xp mode and W8 CP for testing and my ultrabook is currently my main machine. 4gb isnt enough, if they get the S9 to 8Gb in 13" flavour i'd consider trading up for my Z830
-
Oh man, I might have to get this one. An 8GB with an i7 would be perfect (I'll upgrade the ssd later). It's gonna be a real blow to my wallet though. I'll hold off as long as I can...

On the 13.3" I don't really need it, but if there is no price difference from the Sandy Bridge to the Ivy Bridge model and I get 8GB instead of 4GB, I am not going to complain about it. -
wow. i can't imagine how all of you folks are getting around with just 4gB. i'm constantly maxed out!
i'm used to my old 16gb RAM dell 15z where i never had to worry about ram - so i constantly have 50-100 tabs open + spotify + photoshop + sketchup and maybe a few terminals
ps if anyone wants to buy it it's for sale again (first buyer couldn't pay)

Cannot wait for Ivy Bridge, its going to be even thinner compared to NP900X3B, 16.3mm vs 12.9mm
-
WhiteFireDragon Notebook Evangelist
Where did you get this info? Dimensions are exactly the same AFAIK. Only difference is a refresh in the CPU. -
Different.
Sandy:

Ivy:

I got excited initially when looking at those two links and thought that the refresh will get even thinner, but I realized the dimensions on the UK's website is wrong on the NP900X3B. When you compare it to the US site, you'll see that the NP900X3C on UK will have the same dimensions to the NP900X3B on the US.

hmm no news for Europe for this thing? even the sandy version isn't available in Germany.
-
It is available and in stock in Hungary.
-
I will monitor this thread until it's available with 8GB and 256GB SSD. Hopefully Lenovo will come out with an X2 to consider soon enough to compare before buying a new machine.
There's no way I'm spending $1500 on 4GB of ram when Firefox uses 2GB and gets the computer to where it is unusable. -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Time to do some housekeeping? I've got around 50 tabs open in Firefox and it's using about 1GB RAM. I use both the FlashBlock and AdBlock Plus add-ins to minimise unwanted CPU usage and display clutter but perhaps they also reduce wasteful usage of RAM.

Went on sale today in Australia:
Samsung NP900X Core i5 13.3IN Ultrabook - The Good Guys, BuyOnline, Australia -
WhiteFireDragon Notebook Evangelist
^ that's not a stock mistake is it? If anyone is able to completely go through checkout and get shipping confirmation, please post. I thought it was mentioned earlier than IB quad cores will be available first, then the ULV dual cores for ultrabooks will launch in a few months.
-
Yeah I usually have around 50 open, currently have 67 open at 1.2GB with plug in container. The problem seems to be flash videos, the longer you keep the tabs open the more memory they use. Once it hits 1.6-1.8GB I have to very slowly read some tabs and close them, bookmark the flash videos and then reset Firefox to get it down to 600-900MB.
Can't seem to kick the tab habit, even have lists of old bookmarked tabs weighing me down. Over Thanksgiving I knocked out about 130 tabs/bookmarks, some news stories about a year old. -
Where do you see quad core mentioned there? Its i5 3317U dual core.
-
WhiteFireDragon Notebook Evangelist
No, I didn't mean there will be quad core in this notebook. I meant that I'm surprised a dual core IB ULV is already available to buy in these ultrabooks because earlier in this thread, there was mentions of quad core IB being available first in desktops or full notebooks before they announce or launch ULV dual cores for ultrabooks.

I see what you mean. Whatever, happy days, IB is here
-
is this released in the US as of yet? 8g? i7? PLS screen?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Patience! I would be surprised if it shows up before June. Intel's indicated roll-out of IB chips indicated that the lower power CPUs are more likely to be towards the end of Q2 12.
The available specs for the NP900X3C all show the i5 3317M CPU and 4GB RAM. Samsung could easily provide a model with more RAM or a bigger SSD but I suspect that the i7 CPUs (faster within the same design power) may be a few more months showing up in good quantities unless the Intel foundries get up to full productivity very quickly.
John -
Easier said than done
I bought SB model, but still haven`t opened box and used it. I`m waiting for IB - if it doesn`t turn up within 2 weeks, I`ll kepp SB. If IB goes on sale, will sell SB.
-
argh! always so many problems with finding the right laptop. Thanks for the info.
Do we know if the memory is soldered to the mobo in previous models? is the ssd user replaceable? it's all mSTATA correct? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
If you are in UK (as your forum name suggests) then I think the 15" X4C will show up first. The stock of the X3B will need to be cleared before the X3C arrives. UK etailers have been listing the X4C since March but no one I can find is listing the X3C.
The externals are the same as for the X3B but we do not know until the X3C arrives if Samsung have taken out one of the fans and put in SODIMM slots (as on the X4B). All the specs I have seen for different country models show 4GB. If 8GB was an easy upgrade then I'm sure that some would have adopted it (a French datasheet does say expandable to 8GB).
I am confident that the SSD will be mSATA so there's scope for someone skilled with a screwdriver to put in a higher capacity one (if they can find it).
John -
for the current SB model, are there any stats for the 13 vs 15 in terms of battery? Can't seem to find that anywhere.

4-5 hours on the 13". You get about 30% more on the 15".
