Has anyone been able to unlock the power limit for the gpu in Windows 10? I have a 8770 model and I have been trying for several days to up the power limit. I've followed the regedits and msi afterburner mods to no avail. I've tried a variety of drivers but am limited since amd doesn't seem to support legacy drivers

The specs look correct but Samsung put something in a BIOS update several years ago which created some RAM compatibility problems so you are advised to get RAM which other owners of this notebook have reported works OK.

    Hey guys,

I'm new here but it would be great if you could help me with my problem.
So I have a NP880z5e-X02UK laptop from samsung and had to reinstall windows 10 cause of a bug. But I can't seem to get my brightness to change. I've followed all the guides I could find online and none seem to be working. The keyboard shortcuts work and I can see the brightness bar going up and down but the brightness itself doesn't change and is stuck on minimum graphics making it very hard to use during the day.

Does anyone know a fix for this?

    Thanks,
    Kelvin

Install and run Samsung's SW Update and look at the Windows 10 downloads for your notebook. I can see a Brightness Control Patch in the list. You might also need to install Samsung Settings and the Samsung graphics drivers.

Unfortunately neither of us Samsung moderators have time to keep the OPs of the various Owners Lounge threads continually updated; but send me a PM with a proposed update text, and I will insert it into the Opening Post :)

    i've got a np880z5e for the past 2.5 years
today, i noticed that the laptop bottom cover is separating at the area near the trackpad, and on further inspection, the battery appears swollen
it still holds it charge well and only has a 2.5% wear
any ideas on what I should do?
    thanks

    Hi Winston, welcome to NBR.

I do remember some previous mention of swollen batteries. Searching this thread found this post and one a few posts later. Searching across the Samsung forum found several other cases.

Something is clearly wrong with that battery, and I would definitely replace it, even if it is still working, to prevent possible damage to other components if the swelling continues.

I would also contact Samsung and try to persuade them to provide a replacement battery, even though it's past the warranty period.

Wow, so Samsung suggested you pay them $135 (plus shipping, I presume) to fix a defect battery?

Samsung used to have a BIOS feature called Battery Life Extender which they promoted would keep your battery in good shape for 3 years. My NP700Z3A has that feature, and my battery is indeed still in great shape after 4 years. But I saved a copy of their promo where they stated this claim, in case I would need to haggle with them.

If you can find a similar claim from Samsung about battery longevity in your model, then maybe you can use that to press them for a free or discounted repair. If the battery is supposed to last for 3 years, it shouldn't be swelling after 2.5 years, regardless of warranty.

I have my doubts that you'll be able to persuade them, but I would definitely try again. Ask for a supervisor. Tell them you'll be happy to replace the battery yourself if they'll send one to you.

Otherwise use samsungparts.com to determine the exact part number for your battery, then compare their prices with eBay and Amazon. Getting the bottom cover off your laptop is know to be a pain, but the guides and advice in this thread should help.

    Fingers crossed for you!

Lithium batteries shouldn't swell. Is something worse going to happen next?

Samsung should be keen to replace it in case something nasty happens.

Hi, I recently had the exact same problem as you. The only "solution" I found was to swap the battery for a new one.
I found mine on eBay for a relatively low price, http://www.ebay.fr/itm/New-91WH-Gen...-ATIV-Book-8-Touch-NP880Z5E-X01-/291223652813 .The battery took a month to arrive but it seems to be an "original" one, at least the load seems the same to me.
I can send you pictures of my swollen battery, the new one or other infos in the PM if you want.
    Regards,

    Aztyu

thanks for the suggestions! i'm trying to convince samsung to replace it because it certainly is a potential fire hazard (?and a lawsuit if these things exploded) haha

@Aztyu, if you use HWInfo, does it show who the manufacturer is for that battery you bought off ebay?

The same thing happened to my np880z5e a few months ago. In my case the touchpad also stopped working due to the swollen battery. The battery still worked but the laptop was not sitting on the table properly and the trackpad was unusable.

Luckiely Samung Austria/Germany repaired it under warrenty(23 months after purchase).

I just purchased GTA V and the only time I'd get decent graphics is when its set at 800x600. How does it go with yours?

I have the AMD Radeon HD 8800M Series and according to my Device Manager it's the most updated one...

    Am I missing something?

hi folks been a while :)

I have a NP880Z5E-X01AU which is on Windows 8 and looking to upgrade to Windows 10. Alot of the past discussions on this thread are with fresh Win 10 installs from microsoft or upgrading when Samsung Update didn't have windows 10 drivers listed for the model. But I see now that NP880Z5E-X01AU has windows 10 drivers listed. So how safe or problematic is the update for NP880Z5Es ?

I've upgraded memory to 16GB and using 960GB Crucial M500 with Intel 7260-AC so I guess i need to take those into account too.

Also does Samsung Recovery still work after Win 10 update ?

    much appreciated :)

    George

I used to play GTA V with my 880z5e right after gta v was released. Back than GTA was only able to use the internal intel graphicscard and it was almost unlayable. Most laptops with AMD graphic cards(and also some from nvidia) had mjor problems with running GTA. I have no idea if Rockstar did something about this problems.

Here is a huge thread regarding this problem: https://support.rockstargames.com/h...V-on-Laptop-Issues-Intel-AMD?page=84#comments

How you reach 16GB of ram if there are only 2 slot, and 1 it's soldered with 4GB module ?
Everyone here say that the maximum for this model (NP770 & NP880) was 12GB (4GB soldered + 8GB module) ??!!

    Hi folks,
my laptop's (NP880Z5E) keyboard is defective and my battery is swollen, so I will have to replace them.

I think the battery I can replace by myself fairly easy, but replacing the keyboard is probably much harder.
Do you guys think it is possible to replace it by myself or it is better to take it to an authorized Samsung repair?

I don't have much experience with laptops other than replacing the hard drive.

    Has anyone here done it?

Also, I downloaded HWiNFO and it showed that the battery's voltage is 16.7V, while the battery is rated for 15.1V, so that may explain the bulging. Question is whether it is because the battery is defective, the sensor is defective or the laptop's charging system is defective.
Can anyone with a normal battery check its voltage to shed some light, please?

    thnaks

Look back the last few page in this thread, and you will see some mentions of swollen batteries. I would say a higher proportion of reports on this model than other Samsung models.

Definitely replace it, and quickly. If it's swollen, something is wrong, period.

Replacing the battery should be fairly simply, although getting the bottom cover off can be tricky. Follow the advice in the opening post.

Replacing the keyboard is more involved. See this post earlier in the thread.

    mine = NP880Z5E-X01AU came with 8GB soldered so just adding 8GB SO-DIMM = 16GB :)

BatteryInfoView reports 16.7V on mine too and battery is 15.1V DC but touch wood had my NP880Z5E-X01AU for 3yrs now and battery hasn't showed any signs of swelling.

Same problem, recently noticed that my touchpad stopped working and it is due to the swollen battery. I get around 16.9V. My warranty of 3 years just expired this month :(
It seems I will need to get a new battery myself, anyone knows reputable company I can order the battery from (EU)? The last time I got a new "original" and "OEM" battery for my phone it performed worse than the old one.

    Hi,
same issue here, the cover above the touchpad went bulging and the left side of the space bar even came out a bit recently. Though the notebook (Ativ 8 NP870Z5E-X04DE) still worked, I decided to remove the battery asap (same values, 16.9V, 2.5% wear, 5 cycles) and just keep the thing as kind of a "portable pc" for the time being, as I almost never move it around anyway. For the curious: yes, that works without problems, and it does not even tilt as the case is heavy enough, plus it's a tad lighter now :) My warranty has expired last year, so I don't expect they will exchange the battery for free. Replacement batteries have a hefty price tag, the original Samsung battery (AA-PLVN8NP) costs about 230 EUR here and I'm not sure about the various "OEM" offerings that cost about half, but may show the same symptoms over time. Don't know if that's worth the effort. YMMV.

    HTH,

Did not have this issue, try to do a clean install? I've upgraded with no problems. Had to reinstall intel 153342-4358 driver to use less power and regedit FeatureTestControl F048 to get the brightness control back, but that's about it.

Hey guys! I have a quesion/problem here. I have a Samsung Chronos 7 NP780Z5E bought in 2013. I use the computer daily for internet browsing and gaming.

I'm not sure if there's a problem here, but has there been any Samsung Updates for this model? I haven't updated anything through Samsung update in a very long time. Moreover, there is always a "Windows 8.1 Brightness Patch" that NEVER successfully installs. It says I need to do update it manually. But I disregard it since it's not affecting my computer and also my brightness controls work.

I also want to ask about the AMD Catalyst Control Center drivers. How can I update my graphics card? When I check the info on AMD Catalyst Control Center, it says my graphics card is an AMD Radeon R9 M200x.

    Thanks

As I remember all the new drivers (of the official website) work fine with Windows 8.1; maybe these models are not going to have support any longer, but if your computer works fine you don´t need any driver update. Atte. Marco

Follow my previous post #5284 and you 'll fix this issue!

Suggestion: in order to maintan the control over the white balance, if necessary, instead to act on the main contrast, you can reduce and adjust this value for each of three components clikking on the corresponding colors.
As example, for my np880 I have set red: 43, green: 43 and blue: 46.

For the future, remember to repeat this setup after each update of the video driver!

Hey John - I just got a Samsung 4k monitor and am trying to get the 780Z5e (it has the 8870 and intel HD4000) to run at max resolution in Windows 10. It is maxing out at 1080p. Not interested in 4k gaming just 4k desktop environment. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Are you connecting through HDMI? What is the rated limit for that generation of HDMI socket?

The one suggestion I can offer is to lower the refresh rate (to 30Hz) which then allows higher resolution within the same data throughput. You might need to try using a custom display resolution in order to do this.

Hey John - I am connecting through HDMI. I have a 780Z5E but can't find the version of HDMI anywhere. In the meantime I added a 4k custom resolution of 25hz and it worked!

I would really love it if the onboard Radeon 8870 could handle all the graphics tasks.

Since I am not concerned about gaming at this resolution, think the difference betweek 25hz and 30hz would be at all noticeable? Thanks for the feedback!

OK. Problem solved. :) It's probably HDMI 1.4 and the info here suggests that it's only good for 4k at a relatively low refresh rate.

For your purposes this lower refresh rate isn't going to cause visible problems except, perhaps, that rapidly scrolled text might be slightly jerky. It's not like an old CRT display where a low refresh rate resulted in a lot of visible flicker.

Well, up until now i've considered the NP780z5e quite future-proof. This is the first limitation. I found the mouse movement and scrolling of windows to be irritating at 30hz so am at 2560x1440 at 50hz and it is far more tolerable. The screen looks quite decent as well. Thanks again John!

hey, I have a NP780z5e with touch screen and i had a coffee in bag accident. My screen is now stained between the touch and lcd layer, there are bright spots and slighlty brown spots on one side. I have searched for a replacement but cannot find a guide or a shop that sells these screens. Does anyone here know where to buy a new screen for this model and how to remove the old one? i still like this laptop and use it daily so no need to buy a new one, its just that the stained window looks kinda unprofessional

The official Samsung part number appears to be BA96-06473A. That will be the entire display assembly in a new lid (ie an easily swappable service part). However, the gold-plated price tag may cause you to think twice. Instead, read this thread. If that doesn't get you anywhere then it's time to search ebay and other places for someone selling a display taken from a Z5E which has died for other reasons.

Hey all, i havent been in here in a while as my computer has been working just fine. As of this morning, some random windows 10 updates installed and i lost control of screen brightness. I see the brightnesss tool pop up and i can adjust it, however the screen brightness does not change at all. I am stuck on this dark screen! I updated to the latest AMD driver with no luck. Any ideas?

Hi all, Having owned the NP780Z5E (UK) for around three years now I am considering making the move to SSD. In doing so I am thinking of doing a clean install and starting fresh, as the laptop's performance/ temperatures have decreased and increased respectively over time along with many issues with the 8870m graphics card.

Would the best way todo this to be to perform a clean install using the windows 10 restore factory settings option on the current HDD and then cloning this to the SSD via a SATA to USB cable? I have seen many people clean install from a USB however with the recovery option available it seems the easier option? Many Thanks
