No no no, you still made very good suggestions :). For fps monitoring only, fraps is the best in my opinion. And hwinfo is the best to monitor temps and such. I just like using msi afterburner because it also adds overclocking and I am more experienced in using that program. It was another suggestion, not a correction :).

Btw I'm having annoying issues with microsoft visual c++ stuff, anyone else having those? I uninstalled all updates of those to make sure I have the original ones but it didn't help. I was not experiencing these issues a few weeks ago. It makes 3Dmark11 crash and excel returns strange errors upon opening.

    LOL :D

It's OK, I know my limitations. And this is definitely one of them!

I am generally very picky about which drivers I install, precisely because I want to avoid as many as possible of these infernal C++ runtime and .NET updates. After a clean install, I make notes after each driver installation to see if it adds C++ or .NET modules (which can trigger updates). If it DOES, I look for slimmer alternatives.

Some known culprits that have alternatives:

    Intel PROset WiFi
    - use Intel Driver Only or built-in Win8 driver instead

    Intel PROset Bluetooth
    - use built-in Win7/8 driver instead

Intel Management Engine (ME) / Samsung HECI
    - use built-in Win8 driver or Win7 Windows Update driver instead

    Intel Rapid Storage
    - use Win7/8 built-in or Chipset SATA driver instead - though iRST has benefits

Those who remember my old thread on Reducing Latencies will recognize this obsession of mine

Mine gets very jumpy every now and then. I also noticed it happens more when coming out of sleep, or sometimes just after using a two ore more finger gesture. It usually goes away after a while so I'm pretty sure it's just software but it can get annoying some times.

Yeah guys, but I've been playing around with afterburner for a while and couldn't get the GPU Ts to show up: I can't activate them and mmake them show up in the OSD, I only have a few option for the gpu duty %, the fan speed and another one, but no GPU temps.
What I need is an OSD with FPS, GPU T, CPU T, that's it. The rest is optional... And I don't like these tools, they look heavy in my opinion... I really miss ATT and its OSD :(

Wow thanks a lot I'll try that.

HWinfo64 and msi afterburner share the same OSD (rtss) but it's easier to configure in HWinfo64. Run MSI on-screen display server. Open hwinfo64 and click on configure and check show under rivtuner for the values you want to display.

    Yes there is, here:

Btw I have been overclocking a bit lately, the furthest I could push it while remaining stable is 900/1300:

3867 on 3Dmark 11: Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3635QM,SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. NP770Z5E-S01FR score: P3867 3DMarks

I am getting 40-50 fps on a big multiplayer map in BF3 (operation firestorm). Before I was dipping to 26 fps with the same settings (older drivers and stock clocks). This thing rocks with the newer drivers and a bit of OC. Max GPU temp was 78 °C.

My bad, yeah, I misunderstood which "configure" you were referring to.

edit: OK I got the OSD working, the only thing I can't toggle is the GPU temps. Which settings is it on? I'm trying a few but I can't find it. Any clue?

    I don't have that option.

I only see GPU VID, GPU Clock, GPU D3D Usage, GPU D3D Memory Dedicated, GPU D3D Memory Dynamic.

(Tried both the latest stable and latest beta releases)

edit: ok, i found this pic in another thread and I noticed that I don't have the GPU section at all!!

Just wanna comment on the sound system on this laptop......

JBL speakers onboard are the best i've ever heard on any laptop.... the dYnaudio THX system on my old MSI gaming laptop really pales in comparison....

even output through the 3.5mm to earphones sound fantastic..... finally able to do some justice to the price tag of my in-ear headphones....

LOL, I thought I could try that, but it sounded so unlikely to work that I ended up not trying it. But it actually works. Thank you!!

The only thing I need now is to fix it so that it can be displayed in game - the sensor are now showing up on hwinfo, but the OSD refuses to show them..

The dev for HWiNFO64 has been working on that feature -- in recent builds, the GPU needed to be running before HWiNFO is turned on, but in the last version or two it should poll the GPU (even if it's idle) when starting HWiNFO64, and then otherwise leave it alone. But it also depends on whether you're running it in standard (diagnostic?) or just sensor-only mode.

Or hmm, wait a second. I forgot that you guys have an AMD card...and I've got an NVIDIA. Might be slightly different!

As a former Apple/Nvidia devotee I find it slightly retarded by AMD and probably Samsung not releasing proper drivers for 8700M and USB3 (Come on?). I normally don't lurk forums, but that all changed when switching to the Samsung. Constant wishfu but unfruitfull update checks doesn't improve the situation. However, I admire the enthusiasm and helpfulness in this forum, almost makes up for bad service from the providers.

Grrr, seems the odd EUR 7K saving (Apple Macbook Pro Retina) might not have been worthwhile. Love the computer, frustrated as hell by the sucky drivers. USB3 not working. AMD underperforming. Sucks tbh.

What model is your USB 3.0 controller? I thought there is nothing new that will need a new driver. Make sure you have turned off the controller hub's power management in Device Manager. If that is enabled then it sometimes struggles to detect when a device is plugged in.

Don't worry about a Samsung part number. RAM is interchangeable. I would just look for the cheapest 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SODIMM.

Hello! Long time lurker first time poster. So decided to go for it and today got the NP780Z5E-S02CA from FutureShop, the only issue I'm having or think i'm having is the screen brightness seems a bit dim even at max, also I swear it's dimming and going brighter randomly when plugged in.

Edit: I'm an idiot I figured it out!

    Welcome :).

Auto brightness can make the max brightness less bright than its actual max. Check post #1 on this thread for instructions to disable it.

I do.. It looks like if the dedicated card is not active, the OSD doesn't display its info (and that's ok) but once is toggled it doesn't start showing it.. Or maybe I'm wrong and It wasn't active at all lol.. Will have a look when possible

I have the 780Z with the 8770M. I installed the catalyst 13.5 drivers but I left installed the Intel HD4000 drivers (actually I was scared to do it wrong and break my screen or something like that). My brightness controll is working fine (I mean fn + f2 and f3 and the touch controls) also I can put my laptop to sleep and recover with no issues so far. The only strange thing I found was that when I uninstalled the previous catalyst drivers google chrome log me out of my session. I have only tried Dead Space and Fez I saw some improvement and smoother frame rate. Nonetheless in Dead Space frame rate is kind of strange with a lot of spikes but always above 60 FPS (used afterburner to measure it) in high detail, though its an old game. Looking forward to install starcraft WoL and measure performance and stability and maybe BF3 this weekend. Cheers

Was looking around the forums and noticed a few post on this but. Was doing some light gaming (CS GO) and about 20 or so minutes into it the laptop started getting really really hot, I had it slightly elevated screen was at about 65% give or take. So yeah dunno what that's about.

I don't know how or why but I'm pretty sure my keyboard backlight is working as it should right now... I didn't do anything special, left the computer alone while it downloaded something and when I came back the screen was off (as it should have been) but they keyboard light was still on. Since then whatever level I set for the backlight stays... I don't even want to turn off the computer any more xD. Or maybe it has something to do with some windows updates I installed a couple of days ago? I didn't really pay attention.

It makes quite a big difference for usability. When the backlight stays at maximum brightness almost everything seems visible enough, just the blueish icons of the function keys remain hard to see, and just some of them. I'll see if this behavior sticks after rebooting, if it doesn't I'll try to see if I can get it to "glitch" like this again.

Hello, this is my first post, but I've been lurking about here (well, the big thread) since February, but as of today I'm officially a NP780Z5E-S01UK owner.

I'm very pleased with the machine, but coming from a Macbook (plastic unibody Mid-2010) as my last laptop, I've got a bit of a problem with the trackpad. The thing is, I've got used to single click of the trackpad for left, click with two fingers for right, both in Windows and OSX. Now, I can set up the double-finger-right-click function alright, but whenever I single click in the region of the lower-right corner, I get a right click. This is getting tremendously annoying. There seems to be no option in the samsung-installed Elan drivers to turn that right-click functionality off. Does anybody have any suggestions of what I can do about it?

Most of our wisdom about the trackpad configuration is in this thread.

However, on this occasion I don't think you need to do a registry hack. Instead, find and look inside your Samsung touchpad installation package (if need be, export it to somewhere you can find). In the X64 folder there is a program called ETDAniConf.exe which is a different touchpad control panel. Run that program, select buttons and change Right to Click/Select then Apply. You might need to do a reboot.

If that doesn't work then visit the registry and look in places such as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPad and change Button_Right to 0 (I think - that's the same value as for left button). Your registry location may be different - I seem to have got Elantech config data in about five places.

Let us know if it works.

    Hey everybody,

I've got a new question concerning this Notebook. Every time I switch it on out of the sleeping mode it takes a pretty long time (approx. 2 minutes) before it is fully ready for work. The lock screen disappears after some seconds, yet I cannot properly work because some things seem to be loading in the background. During this time the HDD usage displayed in the task-manager is at 100% und doesn't go down for an even longer time than the laptop takes to be fully started. RAM-usage during this time is constant at 33% and neither does the CPU-usage go up.
I haven't uninstalled intellimemory if that is of importance nor changed anything about the notebook's specifications e.g. by installing an SSD. Programms which I don't close before swichting into sleeping mode and which are therefore loaded at the beginning are usually Chrome and 2-3 other prgoramms like iTunes or Outlook.
Is this normal since I still have a HDD and no SSD or is there something I can do about this issue? Or should I just close all programms before switching the Chronos to sleeping mode so that it doesn't take so long starting again? I'm just curious as the Chronos should actually be a beast when it comes to booting and everything...

Many thanks already for your help :)

Intellimemory is using the RAM so it's more RAM content that has to be restored. I suggest you try ininstalling it and see if the total wake-up time is reduced. if there's no change then you can reinstall Intellimemory using SW Update.

This is extremely good news. AMD is providing us fully working drivers, no need to wait for samsung's lousy updates. We'll have drivers as soon as they're released.

    pranktank,

can you please provide instructions on what you did? I tried doing express uninstall of everything AMD related through control panel. It required a restart (brightness dimmed here). Then after restart I installed Catalyst 13.5 beta 3. That required a restart but I still dont have access to brightness controls and the brightness is still dimmed. What did I do wrong?

    Thanks for the help!

I bought it almost four weeks ago when it was last, briefly, in stock at PC World, I'm afraid. It took a week to be delivered, then I've had to wait until my birthday to get my hands on it properly.

I uninstalled AMD stuff like you did. After a reboot I installed latest Intel display drivers through SW update (those drivers being absent causes the problem). After those were installled I installed 13.5. :)

Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately for me when I uninstall AMD graphics it ONLY uninstalls AMD graphics drivers. It does not uninstall intel display drivers. So when I boot up SW update, I dont get an option to reinstall the intel display drivers. Hmmm I wonder what to do from here. I have the toggle to adjust the brightness but its only 1 setting which is weird.

    kia0001

EDIT: Tried extracting the install package and running it manually but it says the drivers installed are newer than the package. What intel display driver do you have installed? I wonder if that could have something to do with it. SW update reports 9.17.10.2963 which is what I have installed but the setup package extracted is 9.17.10.2875.

    That did it! Thanks pranktank!

So for anyone else who wants to use the newest Catalyst 13.5 beta 3 drivers do the following steps:

1). Express uninstall All Catalyst Software through Control Panel
    2). Reboot
3). Verify if the brightness toggle does cycle through all the different brightnesses. If so, skip to step 9.
4). Go to Device Manager and uninstall the intel HD Graphics 4000 driver. Do not check the box to delete the software.
    5). Reboot if necessary
6). Go to SW Update and install the latest graphics driver for the intel HD Graphics 4000.
    7). Reboot
8). At this step make sure all the brightness toggles works properly. If so continue to step 9.
9). Install the latest Catalyst 13.5 beta 3 drivers
    10). Reboot.
11). You should now have the latest drivers with all brightness controls and sleep mode working properly.

The key factor here is to make sure the brightness toggles work properly BEFORE installing the latest catalyst drivers. Otherwise installing it won't help.

Thanks a lot, that got me onto the right track. I don't have ETDAniConf.exe, but in that registry entry, I had to change ClickPad_RightCorner_Click_Func from 1 to 0, and that has done the trick.

Even if ETDAniConf.exe isn't installed, try and save the installation package in SW Update and look inside. ETDAniConf.exe is very likely there in the X64 folder. Copy it to wherever you like and create a shortcut to it.

Thanks - gave this a try but still no luck - brightness toggle moves but never changes brightness no matter what I try.

Try all the steps 1-11 in that order again without skipping any steps. I ran into the same thing as you earlier this morning. Express uninstall all amd/catalyst. Reboot. Uninstall hd 4000 graphics. Install hd 4000 graphics through SW update. Reboot. Try the toggle here. It should work. Then catalyst 13.5 beta 3 again.

Also during the whole process, try using the Samsung optimized power plan. I wonder if the system needs to be using the hd 4000 graphic the whole time.

    See if that helps.

Did you do the brightness fix? If so, you need to put it to its original values through the brightness fix menu.

Great list. But the steps in red are important too, at least I think.

So i think it should be something like this:
    A. First time upgrading to 13.5 beta 3
    1. Go to programs and features and run AMD Catalyst install manager. Check "Express Uninstall all AMD software" and run it.

    2. Update your intel HD4000 drivers through SW update if they are not up-to-date.

    3. Download the AMD drivers from here: Download AMD Mobility Catalyst Graphics Driver 13.5 Beta 3 Driver for Windows Vista / Windows Vista64 / Windows 7 / Windows 7 x64 / Windows 8 / Windows 8 x64 - Softpedia

    4. Install them.

    5. Reboot.

    B. Trying to fix the issues with a previous install 13.5 beta 3

    1. If you did the brightness fix: recover the backup of your registry through the brightness resolver. (If not, skip to step 3).

    2. Reboot.

    3. Go to programs and features and run AMD Catalyst install manager. Check "Express Uninstall all AMD software" and run it.

    4. Go to Device Manager and uninstall the intel HD Graphics 4000 driver.

    5. Download and install the latest HD4000 driver through SW update.

    6. Reboot.

    7. Download the AMD drivers from here: Download AMD Mobility Catalyst Graphics Driver 13.5 Beta 3 Driver for Windows Vista / Windows Vista64 / Windows 7 / Windows 7 x64 / Windows 8 / Windows 8 x64 - Softpedia

    8. Install them.

    9. Reboot
