I used a plastic tool intended to pry open iphones. You could use a plastic knife and slowly work it around. Start at the front and work around the sides from each side. DON'T start at the hinges. I put a small crack in my case. $105 to replace the lower bezel - fortunately it is only a small crack but it was a Homer Simpson moment for sure. Once you get it off, you will see how easy it is to get the hang of. Also, when you put the screws back in, be careful not to overtighten and strip the threads. Good luck!

This is for the old Chronos and then the 7 Ultra, the new one is not quite the same (but the basics are here). You MUST start at the front. there are no clips at the back on this model, the bottom itself hooks onto the back, at the hinge and once you've unclipped the front and sides using the card/plastic tool technique), it will just lift off the back. If you try to start at the back or attempt to unclip the back, you seriously risk breaking the bottom.

FWIW, I used an iphone lever tool to pry mine open and it only took 10 minutes.

It is a very small Phillips. Can't recall the # size but if you buy one of those sets that have a variety of tiny screw driver heads, you'll findnthemright one.

It's not what I'd class as "tiny", it's not as small as the glasses sets you can buy for example, just the smallest of the normal sizes you buy for general household use. I used a #1 philips (marked as #1 on my set anyway!), which seemed to fit fine and didn't sheer any of the screws.

On ATIV Book 6 right now.... having major issues with getting the 8770m to run properly. Games that I assume should be working well, (SC2, DOTA 2, others) just chug along. SC2 runs at like 5 FPS on high, which doesn't seem normal to me...

I have the drivers updated and have tried reinstalling multiple times. Silent mode is also off... not sure what else to do. All the games I play are listed as high performance in catalyst as well.

    Hi,

My new Samsung Ativ 8 (880z5e-X01AU) arrived, and separately, a Samsung 840 (250Gb) SSD.

I want to install the SSD, however I am a little confused as to one aspect of the Windows cloning process.

There are two ways to clone Windows 8 onto the SSD that I can see.

Method 1 is to use the Samsung Recovery tool, via a USB to SATA cable.
Method 2 is to make a windows boot disk (or USB stick), install the SSD and boot into windows via the boot disk.

Apparently Method 2 is better as it is a clean install. So wanting to follow method 2, I am not sure if I also need a Windows 8 DVD to formally install the software once I have booted up via the boot disk, or if everything I need is on that boot disk, and anything else can just be downloaded? The laptop of course did not come with a Windows 8 disk as it was pre-loaded!

I also read I should update all drivers etc before installing the SSD, but if I go to the Samsung site no drivers are listed for my model (in fact the model does not appear in the list at all). So do I need to search each driver by manufacturer, or do I assume no other drivers are needed (I used Samsung SW Update to update software, but not drivers)?

    Thanks for any help!

When you say old do you mean 770z5e? My Chronos 7 should be arriving today along with an SSD. Wondering whether to start unclipping at the front or back?

    Thanks!

Many users don t do the clean install because of the driver. I think you should try to download all the driver with a software called ”driver genius”. I hope it works. I have a question about an external hard disk 2.5 2tb to use with this notebook. I dont know if buy the Wd portable or the wd portable ultra. What is the faster? Is the ultra convenient or it has only some new funtionality?

my new samsung series 7 chronos NP770Z5E-S01SG with AMD HD 8800M cannot run a game only with High Performance mode ..it says " device driver stopped responding and has recovered" .

    i've tried many ways like:

    -upgrading driver into 13.6 beta2
-using leshcat newest driver and WHQL driver
    -turning off PCI Express
    -Registry TdrDelay.

but those all didnt work at all , i still cant play in high performance , i got 44-60'C temp . and i think its normall .

anybody got solutions for this ?

Hey Lads, does anyone think the laptop will be updated with the 4th Gen Cores still? I am beginning to doubt they will as there was no discussion regarding it at the Galaxy and Ativ keynote :( I need a laptop bad, would you say this is the best we'll get with this generation of Series 7 Chronos?

I spent weeks trying to figure this out, and the fact is no one knows (or is willing to tell). It will happen, but you could be waiting 6 months or more.

I bit the bullet (see my above post) and so far happy I did. While this laptop with Haswell and 802.11ac would have been my perfect pc, I just could not see any information an update of any description was imminent.

Okay I got myself the Ativ Book 8 (w/touchscreen) and I've got to say I'm really happy with it. Also, I don't have any of the problems people have mentioned with drivers etc. it just works. When I received the laptop it was painfully slow though, so I got an SSD (Samsung 840 250GB) put it in (which was quite easy), installed a clean windows 8 on it and ran the Samsung SW update utility for the missing drivers (not all of them, some are useless). I admit, the GPU could do better but I know it's because of the outdated driver and I'll just wait for a non-beta driver before I update as I can play most games at 1080p on high anyway (Tomb raider, BF3, etc.) Overall its lightning fast now and hardware-wise it's just top notch (build quality, screen, etc.).

770z5e is a 2013 model, so start at the front.

This is actually bad advice, If you must go down the clean install route, you're actually best just to install the SW Update software from Samsung and then choose the bits you want to install. Installing this software gives you access to all the Samsung setting software which will allow the Fn keys, etc to work properly too!

WD Passport / Passport ultra = virtually the same, though I don't think the Ultra version is available as a 2TB version, only 1TB. WD Software is basically just backup software, pro or standard doesn't make a lot of difference, just slightly different functionality, most of which you will most likely never use!

I would reiterate the advice already given to use Samsung's SW Update program and select what you want to install.

Regarding the WD drives, just make sure that whatever you get has a USB 3.0 interface (which is backwards compatible with USB 2.0).

Heck, let me chime in as well. That really IS bad advice, for the reasons outlined by both damouk and John. But there is yet another reason: Samsung no longer provides drivers and updates on its website, but ONLY through SW Update which pulls them from a Samsung database. That means 3rd party tools such as driver genius (of which I am skeptical to begin with) will not be able to download the latest driver -- or even the correct ones -- because it doesn't have access to that database.

SW Update (and Easy Software Manager before it) really makes clean install a snap on these Sammies. By far the biggest hurdles are related to getting Win8 install media, what to do with partitions and whether to use UEFI or BIOS mode.

Please don't feel we're attacking you, Kira. It's all about getting the right information out to members, that's all :)

Ok sorry but ive read that if you do a clean install you will not find all the drivers with samsung update. So if i do a clean install and i use samsung update i will not have any sort of problem? Is it better to do a clean install despite a copy with f4?

It depends on why you want to do a clean install. As described in this post, many people are much better off just using the Win8 Refresh feature, which gives you pretty much the equivalent of a clean install. But in some cases a clean install makes sense. The steps for that are ALSO in that post.

If you have cloned your HDD to an SSD with F4 (either using Disk Copy or using a bootable USB Recovery backup) I would recommend you just use Refresh to get rid of the bloat.

In any case do you end up with a clean Windows. This post lists which drivers you then want to install using SW Update, which you want to install manually, and which to avoid altogether.

OK - so if I use the F4 Recovery procedure, do I need to obtain a copy of the windows media (Samsung did not provide this)? If I can't get install media, then am I right that I need to use the Samsung (or other third party) cloning software?

Sorry for the probably obvious questions, I am trying to get my ducks in a row before I start.

It's good that you ask before. Much less work for everybody than afterwards ;)

If you DON'T have install media, you have to use some kind of cloning or recovery backup to get Windows onto a new SSD (I presume that's what you're asking).

    1) You can use a 3rd party tool to clone the HDD to the SSD (Acronis or similar). Just know that Recovery will NOT work on the cloned SSD. The Recovery partitions will be there, but F4 won't work. So make sure you keep the original HDD safe. If you want to use the original HDD as external drive, make sure you don't touch those Recovery partitions. In that case you can delete the Recovery partitions on the SSD to reclaim the space.

    2) You can use the Disk Copy feature in Recovery (F4) to clone your HDD onto an SSD connected as an external USB drive. This WILL preserve a working Recovery on the new SSD. If you have limited SSD space, you may delete those Recovery partitions on the SSD once you have Windows running smoothly (and backed up). Again, if you do delete them, make sure you keep the original HDD safe.

    3) You can use Recovery (F4) to create a Bootable Factory Image backup on a 32GB USB stick. It is a self-contained backup of your Recovery software as well as the Factory Windows 8 installation image. It is the closest you will get to proper install media from a Samsung Win8 PC. After swapping in the SSD, you can boot this USB stick and use it to partition and install Win8.

All of these approaches will be cloning your factory installation with full bloat. So use Refresh followed by the driver installation steps as previously described in order to get a lean Windows installation.

This subject is covered extensively and repeatedly in this thread (including in the opening post). I advice some searching and reading to understand the details. Follow the links -- NOT the White Rabbit

Two days ago a friend of mine poured his beer right into my keyboard while it was still powered on. I turned it off immediately and held it upside down to let everything drip out of it (Oh the horror). Needless to say I nearly had a heart attack and found it really hard to stay nice to him :p.

A few hours later I had the courage to power it on again and everything worked! It only emitted a beer smell :D. Now, 2 days later, everything still works perfectly. I'm really happy with this laptop, definitely after it survived something like that. I still don't recommend anyone to pour anything on his chronos/ativ though :D.

Difficult to stay calm in a situation like that. Even more difficult to pad your friend on the back and tell him not to worry, it will be fine.

I'm glad it worked out well in the end -- though that beer smell may stay with you for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if John has some suggestions for how to wash and dry it. He's a wizard with things like that.

I'm glad it still works pranktank, that must of been really unnerving to go through!
Anyway, I'm wondering if the only way to go back to Windows 8 from windows 7 since I downgraded, is to recover from Samsung's backup software? Because I didn't use Samsung's software

If you have intact Recovery partitions (and are able to F4 boot it) you can use that to restore to factory Win8. But if you changed from UEFI/GPT to BIOS/MBR when you downgraded to Win7 (as is common) chances are you wiped the disk and your Recovery partitions are gone. If you made a USB stick backup you are still in good shape, just boot that, re-partition and restore. But change your BIOS back to UEFI & CSM OS first.

Alternatively, if you have Win8 install media, you can use that to make a clean install. UEFI/GPT or BIOS/MBR should both work fine (with slightly different feature sets).

I think that the best solution is a fresh install, because with copy or cloning windows doesn't know there's a ssd so the system won't be optimized for it. Instead if you make a fresh install windows should auto detect the ssd making right changes and optimizations while installing. Otherwise after a cloning you should use Samsung magician tool to optimize the whole system for new ssd, but I still think it's always better a fresh install.
The only thing I'm not sure about, is the downside of this procedure beside the boring longer process to set the whole system up.

I'm not 100% confident that there will be a satisfactory outcome in the longer term because any deposits might gradually upset the electronics or gum up the movement. However, beer is less hazardous than soft drinks such as Coke which is rich in sugar and acid.

A side-effect of the separated keyboard design is that it is no long easy to remove the keyboard for cleaning (ideally a good soak and then thorough drying): The keyboard on this model is integrated into the keyboard surround / palm rest and complete disassembly is required to get this unit out.

If the beer didn't penetrate properly into the key mechanisms then it may be possible to wash off more of the remaining dregs by holding the computer upside down and wiping the keyboard with a wet sponge with a little liquid detergent - the objective being to wash the keys without the water penetrating to the electronics. However, it's not something that I have tried. My first rule of computer usage is to keep drinks away.
