Ok, i got a little problem again. This time with touchpad. Installed sensei mouse software (incl with my mlg mouse) after that touchpad's multifunctions did not work anymore, so i uninstalled drivers to install them again. It sure installs the drivers, but i have yellow "!" mark in tray icons, also the mouse options "touchpad" tab is also gray and inactive, since i seem to dont have the driver "addons" or "multifunctions" if u please, installed.
Cant roll back since i did it long time ago, neither is there a sys restore point AND also dont have sensei soft installed anymore. I did download the driver from sw, but that aint working :(
    Any ideas?

edit: it could be that i uninstalled wrong driver under device manager. (np870z5e) Could someone check the device manager's mice.. tab. Should there be more than:
    *Samsung PS/2 Port Input Device

I must ask again because no one noticed my question:

Hi there i have one dilemma about this laptop, since battery is not suitable for removing on daily basis how long is the expected life of this battery?
And when it dies eventually where can i get new one as this laptop is pretty expensive i would like to use it for 4-5 years. Are there some on ebay or some other specific site.

If you check Samsung's advertising about your model then there's probably something along the lines of "battery will have 70% of its capacity for up to to 1500 charge cycles / 3 years" (see here for an example). However, there's still only a one year warranty on the battery so it's prudent to check the battery wear (HWiNFO or Battery Bar) a couple of months before the end of the first year. If the wear is more than about 15% then run the battery calibration in the BIOS. This might bring the wear down or it might go up. If it goes up then re-run the calibration since the calibration process causes some wear and can make an unhealthy battery look sick. If you can get the wear over 20% then it's unlikely that the battery will meet Samsung's claims and you can ask for a replacement under warranty. There have been a few instances of bad batteries in the past year or so (there was definitely a batch a bad batteries for the NP900X3B) but the problems represent only a few percent of the total.

However, it is likely that you could be looking for a new battery after about 3 years and the part does exist. The number is BA43-00359A for the NP780Z5E (and is probably the same for the other models covered by this thread). Officially, the battery is not user-replaceable because it involves removing the base from the computer. However, by that time the warranty, if you are worried about that aspect) being a distant memory.

    Hi,
So I bought the Ativ Book 8 from BesBuy, but I haven't opened it because of exams. I will check it next week.
For now, I want to guarantee the best experience from start: so what should I start with?
I should not upgrade to Win 8.1, right? Should I run the SW update or not?
Should I get the AMD beta or which driver? Or should I first check my games to see how it works since the switching + speed might actually work'?(planning on playing FIFA, BF4 and such, not high with Full HD, though). The original driver is always slow, right?
And I have just bought the SSD: I am not completely sure about the backup/factory image as the steps in the first post don't go in depth at that point. Is an image enough or should I use Samsung's own Recovery system? Do I need an external DVD-reader for any of the steps?
    Thanks

John thanks a lot for your answer. I tried Samsung parts site but i searched with this product code NP870Z5E-X01HS and i didn't get any results.
I am glad that it is possible to order battery replacement.
Thanks a lot one more time.

Samsungparts.com is for US models (last two letters US or UB) but the NP870Z5E hasn't been sold there.

However, I would expect the NP870Z5E to use the same battery ( BA43-00359A) as the NP880Z5E since the difference is the touchscreen. The NP770Z5E uses the BA43-00318A battery. They might be interchangeable.

Click the Spoiler buttons in the first post. There is a detailed procedure for using Recovery to do this. You need a 32GB USB flash drive. If you clone (or make images) with a 3rd tools, you won't have Recovery.

I applied that overclock tweak, and my guess is that it always keeps the 2nd GPU enabled at 300mhz until you play a game, and I use the battery on my ATIV Book 8 pretty often, so I guess I wont be overclocking

Hi I have a question do you think that one dead pixel is enought to demand reclamation ? Today it just appeared on my notebook and I´m seriously pissed off. It is great laptop but now I´m disappointed. The screen is great but now dead pixel ... It is just three months old.

Apparently the Left JBL speaker on my np780z5e stopped working... dont use audio much but today I noticed the sound was very low. thinking levels were off I checked and there on. Left speaker is just dead. I see one of the latest updates was to the audio driver. could this be connected somehow? Any ideas how to replace the speaker?

been really disappointed with this laptop so far.

    Hey Guys,

I'm trying to create a factory bootable image on my 32GB usb, but my bios does not seem to be able to read it. I created the factory image and enabled the option to make it bootable. I then did the following steps:
    Fast Boot/Fast BIOS=disabled
    SecureBoot=disabled
OS Mode Selection=UEFI & CSM OS
To test out my factory image, I pressed f10 on boot with the usb in, but a usb device did not show up in the list of bootable options. It just showed the main HDD, UEFI General and General. Even in the bios, in boot priority i do not see an option for USB device.

Could it just be that my USB key is not working correctly? Or am i missing something. Just want to make sure before I go out and buy another USB.

    Thanks

Good thing you test it before swapping out the disk or do anything else drastic. Is this a SanDisk flash drive by any chance? They are known to be problematic because they don't act as removable drives, but as fixed drives. If it IS a SanDisk, I would definitely get a different one. Otherwise I would try a few things before spending more money -- including creating the USB backup again.

Different users report different findings when it comes to booting that USB. Some were able to boot it with default BIOS settings of OS Mode Selection=UEFI OS and SecureBoot=On (which is puzzling to me); others had to change settings the way you did. So do try with the default settings as well.

It would be great if some who have this model (which I don't have myself) and used the USB backup successfully could report the exact settings required to boot their USB backup.

One thing you can try, is to temporarily set OS Mode Selection=CSM OS (ie disabling UEFI), just to verify the bootability of the USB. Don't run a Restore this way, though, it probably will not work correctly. If it DOES let you boot the USB this way, try and set it in BIOS Boot Priority, then switch back to OS Mode Selection=UEFI & CSM OS (or even just UEFI OS) and see if it sticks.

Note: Disabling UEFI ( OS Mode selection=CSM OS) will prevent Windows from loading, so change it back as soon as you are done testing. And only try this if you are able to use F2 to enter BIOS, NOT if you depend on Windows Advanced Startup to get there.

Thanks dannemand. I forgot to mention that I tried reformatting the USB drive (fat32) and again did a factory image and it still did not show up. The USB is a silicon power one. Told my brother to grab one for me and he ended up with this one. Probably not the best quality. I tried various settings in the bios but none work. I will give your suggestions another try today and if not I will buy another USB stick this weekend.
Any suggestions on a USB that is confirmed to work? I'd rather have a good quality one since it will be stored if I need it again.

There is some discussion in the thread (probably about 6 months back) of different flash drive brands. I'm not at my pc now, or I'd try to find it for you. It was before we learned why SanDisk drives don't work. Beyond that, I'm not sure more expensive ones are necessarily any better for this.

Once again, I'd be great if those who used the USB backup successfully on this model could post details, including brand of flash drive and which BIOS settings work to boot it.

Edit: Just a thought: If you create a bootable backup in Recovery (instead of a factory image) does that boot for you?

Switchable grpahics works just fine after the tweak so battery life should be the same.

I'm pretty sure this is covered by warranty. Samsung should fix it for you.

Check post #1 for instructions how to install non-samsung drivers, as well as recommdations for which ones too choose.

Did switchable graphics work on this driver?

Just installed the SSD, Holy moly this thing is a monster now.
I have a 4gb stick of ram DDR3 from my last Asus k53e that failed. I was going to instal it because I have it laying around but it's only 1066mhz.
Will this slow things down, or is it even compatible with the Ativ 8?

I believe I have a problem with my Chronos 7...It overheats so much under high preformance, that it almost burns me. It is hot under laptop, as well around keyboard.
Measuring with HWMonitor all 4 cores reach almost 100°C while playing games ! :( I am not expert, but I think CPU temp should never come over 80°C ??
I believe this is also the cause games have lag?! Now only question is, is there a problem with fan, or is just dust, or...? I will probably get it repaired under warranty, I am just affraid they will say everything is fine.

I don't get you guys. The SWUpdate drivers are working fine, albeit the switching issue which can be resolved via Fn+F11, which in my case is working on all 3 Chronos 7 in my store.

Why are you guys giving yourselves so much trouble over using the other drivers? Does the performance increase justifies for all the troubles you guys are having?

Just stick with the drivers and software that is on SWUpdate, and if the graphics switching isn't working, double tap Fn+F11. Isn't that easier than all the problems you guys are having with all the beta drivers and modified drivers etc?

ATTENTION!! Do not install LeekM Drivers!!! If you install them it Can/May break future AMD driver installations. I had to do a system restore in order to get back my 13.11 Beta 1 drivers. Once you install those drivers, they wont fully uninstall. BEWARE!!

    I had the same experience.

On what surface are you using the laptop?

Yes, but they are really slow and don't let the 8870m reach its full potential, at all. 13.10 beta installs like a charm and works perfectly. Just uninstall previous AMD drivers, reboot, install 13.10 beta, reboot and you're good to go with a huge performance increase. It's a very simple procedure.

At the moment I'm using AMD's 13.152.0.0 and Intel's 10.18.10.3304 drivers for 8.1 and everything seems to be working very well. There's an optional update in Windows Update named Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - AMD Radeon HD 8800M Series, do you recommend to upgrade it? I'm worried that this new version is going to remove AMD's Configure Switchable Graphics.

Check my response to dcolaco a few posts before yours. I wish I could give you exact guidance. I am hoping that other members who used their USB successfully will share details.

Check member zirdaj's post here and the discussion around that.

I don't think a USB3 is necessarily better for this (though of course it is faster). In fact, on my older NP700Z3A, it is better to use the USB2 port with Recovery than the USB3 port. I would expect Samsung to have fixed that in newer models, but I cannot say for sure.

IN the windows device manager at the "monitors" section it says "generic pnp monitor".

    is that ok??????

BTW with the SW drivers for windows 8.1 I get 3450P in 3dmark 11. I think that's very good.... no need for the beta drivers..

    Hi everybody,
yesterday my kids stumbled over the charge cable of my NP770Z5E-S02DE... Unfortunately the laptop crashed with the closed screen on the edge of a shelf (Why does only Apple has this magnetic connections for the charge plugs... :-( ).
The laptop starts but I only see a destroyed screen.
The Samsung hotline sent me to a company called "let me repair". "Let me repair" gave me a price of 200€ for the screen + 50€ work + 10€ shipment. I googled "let me repair" and found some bad comments about them.
Now I'm thinking of repairing the screen on my own.
Does someone can recommend a seller of screens and does someone have a procedure how to do it?

    Thanks a lot!

still, smth is wrong here in what I am doing. First of all, I have ativ book 8 running windows 8. I uninstalled original AMD driver (but had to do it from Device Manager as in Control Panel I did not have any AMD drivers, just the manager, which is only 20+ MB big), rebooted and installed the recommended 13.10 beta, rebooted - same problems as Shloosh recently reported - when trying to open either Catalyst control center or switchable graphics - I see an error message - smth like "There are no graphic settings..." and it fails to open.
What are we doing differently with you, Pranktank? It just does not make sense how two similar machines behave differently with the same drivers!

I will never understand why u guys are making ur life hard with those beta and unsupported drivers... when there is no significant gain by installing them

Hello! I've had my AtivBook 8 since the 26th of July and I have been using it pretty much every single day since. What my concern now is the battery wear level. At the beginning the wear level was 0.8%, which then went up to 2.5% after 50 cycles (charges) and now, the wear level is at 7.4% after 136 cycles. Is this normal and acceptable? If not, what should I do? Possibly something faulty within the battery?

Your responses are appreciated, so just come with them :D

I believe this is normal since wear level of my laptop is 2,5% after ''only'' 30 cycles. I would advise you to use it as much as you can plugged in

I've been using 13.9 WHQL mobility for my Samsung and its my personal favorite so far. Implied stability (since its WHQL) and no problems with graphics switching. It seems AMD has blocked access to it (and most mobility drivers) due to fears of incompatibility of vanilla drivers with OEM laptops. I uploaded it here:

The drivers that comes with SWUpdate is 13.9 WHQL, and from the changelogs between 13.9 WHQL and 13.10 beta, there isn't any performance boost, specifically more of fixing the frame pacing staggering which does not apply to our laptops. Also from other forum threads, performance increase from 13.9 WHQL to 13.10 beta even on non mobile GPU, the performance increase is nearly none existence.

Also, 13.10 beta couldn't install on all 3 of my Chronos 7 without ending up with an exclamation mark in the device manager saying Windows has stopped this device as it caused an error with a error code of 43 if I remember correctly, all 3 with freshly installed Windows 8.1 non upgrade versions.

Yup, I'm happily raiding 4-6 hours on the SWUpdate drivers with over 120 FPS in World of Warcraft... Don't see why that kind of performance couldn't satisfy others...

When I update the AMD driver using SW update I just get a black screen with the pointer visible....which I could only get rid of by forcing the machine to go into safe mode. (same thing happens if I get windows to update the driver)

I've uninstalled both the Intel and AMD drivers, updated to the latest HD4000 drivers and then installed the AMD 13.10 beta software (from the link on the first post)... as suggested in the first post

I now longer get the black screen! but get "AMD Catalyst Control Center cannot be started message" when I try to configure the graphics options

I not bothered about being on the latest driver... It would just be nice to have the ability to use the graphics card in the machine with Windows 8.1

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Cheers
