I had the same problem than you but thought it was due to a bad version (32 bit instead of 64) and had to use a restore point ,maybe you'll have some luck with the new intel drivers .
And as soon as you obtain working brightness ,create a restore point then try the amd ones (no critical problem other than switchable graphics)

Hello,
I am trying np880z5e (8870m version) and i have problems with gpu switching. Whenever i set "high performance" in CCC for any game, after starting it laptop freezes with one of the first frames displayed on screen and with no mouse/keyboard/touchpad response. Only power off button helps.
Intel HD gpu works good - completly no problem with games, nothing freezes. Also benchmarked CPU, no problem.
Tried almost different official drivers, but only these from samsung (sw update) worked (some didn't installed proper drivers for gpu so it wasnt recognised etc.). Also checked win 8.1 - still no success.
EDIT: with high performance in CCC but low performance on battery settings -> ati powerplay i get 400/300 clocks and everything works. Don't know whats wrong now, completly. Any ideas? There is even no chance to overheat - it just takes like 0.5s to freeze.
Any suggestions?
I would really appreciate any help, as lap is needed asap for work.
Thanks in advance -
First download the drivers ,create a restore point ,use display driver uninstaller to remove ati driver (don't remove the intel one if you have brightness control) ,reboot and install the 13.12 driver from above this should remove your problems .
If you want to monitor your laptop temps ,just check the software Speccy from piriform -
NP770z5e with the 8870m here. Apart from the frustration at lack of driver updates, this has been an OK machine. Having a strange problem at present though - keyboard backlight has just started to get temperamental, and switches itself off even in near darkness.
Is this a driver, or controlled through firmware? I've tried resetting to default in the Samsung settings (fn+f1) but the behaviour returns. Odd. -
NP780 w/8700m series
Lost ATI graphics since updating to Win8.1
Decided to try and update today as I was having graphics problems in a game.
Turns out that Samsung has nothing for me in the way of ATI drivers!
SW Update doesn't even have one listed!
FYI - Old version was 8. something
Used Windows Update to update to 13.152.0.0
System threw a black screen fit and I had to force a reboot twice before I could get back into Windows
At that point, Device Manager showed a problem with the ATI card/driver and had disabled it.
I then rolled back the driver in Device Manager.
Interestingly, the version remained the same.
After a few screen flickers the card enabled itself and it now works in the games!
Hope this helps someone else! -
Hi,
today, a BIOS update for the Ativ 8 (P04ADH) arrived via SWUpdate. Unfortunately, it did not help considering the graphics switching problems I still experience, in particular in World of Tanks and War Thunder, among others.
Good news, still, might be that I seem to have found a simple workaround: if I start the widely known GPU-Z utility ( TechPowerUp) and select the AMD card for monitoring via the combobox at the bottom (useful for monitoring temps anyway) before starting WoT, the system stays on the AMD even when entering and leaving a battle. Before, it always switched to and fro between cards in a fairly random manner, ending in low fps in either the hangar or in-game (battle), sometimes even and suddenly when invoking a dialog. This issue astonishingly succeeded at driving me to nuts for months now; check this thread for my posts for detailed descriptions of the issue.
More or less accidentally found that out when monitoring temps (max temp is 72 degrees btw), and wondered why WoT suddenly ran smoothlessly (at 40+ fps, medium settings with improved graphics). Don't know if this only works on my system, but it really seems to cure this annoying behavior, so I just post this in the hope that it may help others too. Oddly, GPU-Z may not even be necessary on subsequent game starts, my system behaves right even after a reboot. Odd, YMMV. I run the system on high performance energy settings for gaming.

I have a Samsung ATIV Book 8 (Im assuming it's NP880Z5E) - of course I only found out about the "dont update to 8.1" thing until after I did it. Ive had no major problems - until today. I was in SW Update - saw a new bios update. It flashed the bios - told me i couldnt use my mouse/keyboard - restarted fine. Then when it reboots - windows starts and says SW Update needs to finish doing some work - now its been hanging there - loaded to a certain point for over an hour now. Is this okay - did the bios finish doing what it needed to do? If I cancel it - will it just revert and ill have to redo the bios update? Am I screwed? lol
Heres a screenshot I took and cropped - this is where's hanging at doing nothing...
I really can't lose any information on this computer, every tech person is like (you can always reset to out of the box settings or - sorry but out warranties no maatter how much money you throw at them - dont cover "beta data" well guess what ALL I CARE ABOUT IS MY BETA DATA!!
I wouldnt of spent over 2k on a new laptop for my studio if I knew it was going to be nothing but anxiety with every update that I could lose all my information (who CARES that I can put it back to factory settings, that doesnt give me back the year or so of my life that I could lose worth of hard work in writing, producing, recording, and more...You'd think at this point they'd get it through their thick skulls that a "Fixed" (not in my opinion) laptop doesnt do me any good if Im still losing all my info and would've put in fail safes for this kind of situation. Now Im afraid to cancel it or to even reboot for fear of losing my information, and/or black screen. What should I do - I cant be the only person having this problem. (Oh and I appreciate the link to the bios update, download separate and install separate program - but that link no longer works, and as such does me no good)
Im just keeping my fingers crossed that this is alright. If I lose all my music again, Ill lose my mind, and someone will be getting a verbal skull bashing through tech serrvice (while im sure they'lll just repeat the same old lines like robots over and over, im sorry sir but we dont cover beta data, would you like us to send you a box so we can restore it to factory settings - NO! No I DO NOT - what I want is someone who is willing to innovate to solve these problems instead of sitting on their butts doing nothing - apologizing talking circles around me doesn't solve the problem, nor does 'fixing' hardware issues - I want my DATA back - the only thing that REALLY matters - I can fix a laptop myself, I can install a fresh factory windows myself - I dont need support for that, I need support for what really matters - all the information that makes your computer YOURS and not just another blank slate it!) /endrant
Im a little dissapointed at samsung honestly - I paid a good ammount of money and was told by every salesman that if i needed a reliable computer to recording audio (I use Reaper - a Digital Audio Workstation by Cockos) that this would be one of the best models I could get - Ive never spent this much on a pc before but I wanted one with no issues that I wouldnt have to worry about losing months of work of my music (which has happened more times than I care to think about)...and its been nothing but jumping through hoops (they dont even recognize the ATIV 8 in SW update - it has every other ATIV book but not 8 - why are we being excluded - I called samsung once and asked - nicely - ? and they said they were working on it
(yeah...sure, a year later - it still doesn't recognize the model number or ativ 8 - but atvi 9 and 7 are there...Why are we being ignored?) Im beginning to think that warranties are a big freaking waste of time. If you can't restore my data then the money i spent on a warranty plan was WASTED - like every other warranty Ive ever had on a pc either from a manufactor, geek squad or staples (worst of them all). -
Wait for other advice but if you never saw a cmd windows opened saying samsung bios update whatever ,you have nothing to fear . -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Don't let SW Update do the BIOS Updating. Something else is probably blocking it.
Use the standalone BIOS update program (link in the first post of this thread).
John -
EDIT: you mean log to file checkbox? -
BTW - John - thats what I was saying - I appreciate the advice/link but the link no longer works (or atleast for me) I tried it a few times and just got a blank white site ( no 404 error or 'no data recieved' like a wifi drop, just blank leaving me to think the site does not exist or the link isn't active anymore...or something? lol) Is there another place I can get the separate program? It would be appreciated.
Could Kaspersky be whats blocking it from finishing (although my firewall isnt blocking anything and I made sure it was an allowed program to do whatever it needed)
Also,
Can I just cancel it and be fine - then try and find a working link for the BIOsupdater.exe?
Any help is much appreciated. Im not restarting again until ive got this figured out lol not risking losing all my info (let me put it in perspective Ive had 4 different computers die on me - Ive been a rapper for 5-6 years now almost finishing more than 7 full length albums (not including random tracks) that all were lost because of computer problems and useless warranties. I just got my stuff back together - a really nice laptop with enough memory, great CPU - I love the ATIV 8 other than the fact that windows and samsung can't seem to get their crap together. I mean you've all heard that they're scrapping windows 8 and 8.1 for a windows 9 in 2015 right? They better offer us that bought this clearly defective OS a cut rate on 9 or I think we should get it for free. -
it links me nothing... just a blank white page... (even though when I try to post the full link it does say samsung - I get nothing. Is their site down tonight or something?
Samsung US | TVs - Tablets - Smartphones - Cameras - Laptops - Refrigerators
Infact - even the main site minus the endless string of random letters numbers and symbols - "http://cj.dotomi.com/" doesnt work - just loads a white page.
I cant see anything that could be blocking it (other than Kaspersky - but I made sure its an allowed program (SW Update that is) and I can even exit it totally or have it pause protection for a half and hour. It stilll goes no where.
Any link to that standalone BIOS Updater would be much appreciated. Cause that one just isnt working (Is it just on samsungs official site? I could go looking for it myself if so) -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
However, the US page here still uses the old format so click on that page, then downloads and find the firmware tab. I'll amend the page in the other thread.
John
Update: I've figured out the direct link to the BIOS update program. -
Can anyone tell me the best performance driver for the 8770M
Sent from my SM-N900 using Tapatalk -
@AMKR: I understand your frustration. But in addition to the advice already given, I would add that your first priority, BEFORE you do anything else, should be to backup your data now, while you have a working computer. If you don't have an external HDD then go and buy one right away.
Any computer, no matter how expensive, can fail -- either triggered by software issues (as in the case of the Win8.1 update or BIOS updates) or caused by hardware defects. Hard disks fail, it happens every day. It is up to us as users to safeguard our data by always keeping a second copy of anything important.
I know this sounds preachy, and I apologize for that. But it really is important to practice backup before making significant changes or updates.
As for running the BIOS Updater utility, you can always save (export) it from SW Update, then run it separately as recommended. Or use the updated link that John gave you. -
Is the new 14.3 beta driver working? ( is it better than the unofficial 14.1 driver?)
-
New bios updated fine using the bios utility - i'd love to see a changelog, but at least nothing appears to be broken.

Dear friends!
I just got a serious BIOS updating issue, now my laptop ativ book NP880Z5E-X01HK doesnt work at all
2 days ago I just run the SW Update which suggested me to do the bios update. After i run the update my pc was hanged and didn't response at all for more than 15 minutes so i decided to do restart (even power button didn't work so i used the way with a little reset hole).
After all, when I press power button the LED power indicator lights but nothing all is happening
Could you give me any advices to fix it? I tried to search for the bios drivers in internet to flash my bios manually like people do it with crises disks, but unable to find and at all. There are always SW Update recommended to use but no any drivers available.
As I can see now, my ssd ( I did replacement with HDD after I bought this mashine) works well and its definitely problem with bios.
Do you think I can solve it without visiting a service center?
Thanks for your replies! -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Search those for possible fixes. We thought the UEFI-related issues had been fixed.
John -
Your frequent advice to always flash BIOS updates outside SW Update is important. So is making backups before performing any significant system changes or updates.
One possible cause is if Windows was reinstalled with UEFI disabled, and the update reverts BIOS settings to UEFI enabled -- that could cause a non-bootable situation.
The solution in that case would be to reset BIOS settings to default (always advisable after BIOS updates) then change settings to match one's setup (disable UEFI if Windows was installed that way). -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
John -
My point was merely that it may not have been triggered by UEFI bugs (like the original bricking cases in that thread). It could have been just a bad BIOS flash. From what I understand, power does seem to come on, there is just no booting.
Once again, having previously disabled UEFI and re-installed Windows (say on the new SSD) can in itself cause a non-bootable situation after a BIOS update. We had a few such reports already, where the solution was resetting BIOS defaults after an update, and changing UEFI to match the Windows installation. But of course that assumes F2 works to enter BIOS. If that is not the case, the BIOS/CMOS reset described in the UEFI bricking thread is definitely worth a try.
If that fails too, I would say temporarily swapping the original HDD back is worth a try. We have had cases where users were unable to enter BIOS because it couldn't locate an EFI boot partition (which only exists on UEFI installations). Again, this can happen if Windows was re-installed as non-UEFI and the BIOS update re-enabled UEFI behind the user's back.
Or it could be something else entirely. But these things are definitely worth trying before sending it in for service. -
Hey guys! i know this has been discussed many times, and ive check through the thread but i cant find the answer im looking for.
It about the graphics driver, im playing Diablo 3 expansion atm and even not on high ive got like 20 fps. And im thinking this high end graphics card should run this game at max in his sleep from what ive read.
My driver atm is the one from SW update: AMD Graphics Driver_9.003.5.0000
Its the only one i could get to run. Ive tried:
1) the 13.10 beta which wouldnt even install
2), the new 14.3 from the amd website, which would not switch graphics card
3) LeekMs 14.1 beta fix which would leave feint shadows of other windows and burn the into the screen, also i wasnt sure if it switched correctly.
I really need help on which driver to install and how exactly.
I really doubt its the cpu that slows the comp down, its also getting very hot when playing.
I Hope someone can help, thankyou
EDIT: im still using windows 8 -
If you prefer to make a clean Win8 install from a USB stick, I recommend you keep UEFI enabled, but make sure the USB stick from which you install is formatted as FAT32 (not NTFS). -
Thanks for the info Dannemand!

and yes I totally understand it is our responsibility as computer owners to back up our data, I take responsibility when I spill water on my laptop or something - but if its something that is honestly due to shoddy architecture of machinery (like my Toshiba before this - which screen cracked because I grabbed the computer and didnt know how weak they made their plastic LCD screen, I was by no means man handling it or squeezing it but it cracked and was unreadable) - then I feel I shouldn't have to bear that blame - they just made/sold a subpar product (not naming anyone in particular, just a generality) and its a little unrealistic to expect them to work miracles (although I know IT IS possible to get data from a fried hard drive - you just need to find a specialist - pay like 300 dollar just to have it looked at and then even more if you want it to be done - as its a highly specalized skill set - to literally go in find broken sectors and fix them and needs to be done in a completely controlled environment. Im just saying the best companies - should start offering such services in their top-of the top warranty programs. You know - they sell them to you under pretexts that - no matter what we can fix and restore you data (I even had an hour long conversation about this with a staples tech employee once - and he assured me that the warranty I was buying covered everything - only to find out he lied straight to my face after reading the fine print) So I've learned the hard way.
The real issue is nowadays - the back up drives are so flimsy (especially the cheaper passport drives) I had one from seagate that I literally just pinched a little to hard picking it up and heard awful noises coming form inside - after that it was broken - which is a bit ridiculous given its price point was over 100 dollars, and I took it to staples - where I had gotten a warranty - they plugged it in and said there was nothing they could do. They wouldn't even replace it or give me store credit because "it wasn't accidental" - I just PICKED IT UP!
I still have a 80GB Western Digital "Portable-External" drive from like 1995 - that HUGE bulky - brick like thing. Ipods carry more nowadays, and the drive im talking about needs its own external power supply from a wall outlet. Its the only external drive (or any computer device) that Ive had for that long that still works just as well as the day I got it. Ive dropped that thing more times thang I can remember - it was sitting in a dusty corner for years. Recently booted it up, and it worked like a charm. Now-a-days they just don't make external drives nearly a well as they did back then. Id rather still have huge brick looking drives (imagine what technology they could fit in all that space nowadays and how much space it could hold) than these passport drives that break with a slightest touch - or I had an even cheaper passport drive - that died literally because it wasnt on a flat surface - I heard spinning/grinding noises - when I was watching a movie that was stored on it. Next thing I know the movie stops - drive disconnects and is dead forever. Its not like I havent been backing up my information - I have (and even more so now days) but the external drives can suffer the same fate as any PC. Cloud technology is promising (mediafire especially gives you quite alot of space for free - amazing company) but say the SkyDrive Cloud that came with Windows 8/My ATIV 8 - it NEVER uploads my stuff - its always trying to connect - despite storing things the correct way, it just doesn't work. I miss when I used to work on a underground music website and had access to an extensive FTP server haha.
What is the best cloud service (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg - with unlimited space) out there right now? I have 3 'passport' style back up drives, and more thumb/zip drives than I can count. But they all have easy to spot flaws. The best one I have, a western digital (new) - they aparently are the only people making external drives that care, as far as I can see (evidenced by the almost 10 year old 80GB external drive I have that still works like new)
I am going to back up everything in triplicate. But when you have huge reaper sessons (taking up GBs off space per session) among many other files to back up - it takes a good while to do. Im not saying that as an excuse by any means but - theres gotta be a point where manufactors and consumers meet and say alright its time to innovate instead of releasing a slightly better model (or making a high tech model, using the cheapest materials possible so that like lightbulbs - they'll always burn out eventually - just like a perpetual motion machine or a never dying battery - they wont EVER make one because they wouldn't make repeat profit - its the name of the game sadly. They could if they wanted to but they wont...not until something like Zeitgeists 2nd or 3rd movie's idea's of everyone - having access to everything for free - becomes a reality - like a library for any and everything. Its sad that we live in a world obsessed with greed, and ruled by corporations, really it is - R. Buckminister Fuller came up with ideas we could end world hunger and raise the world populace up to middle class, then to high class - in the 60s-70s, within a decade and proved his theories worked and were sound. But did anyone listen? No - of course not because tahst not what the elite richest people want. They don't want equality amongst classes, and abolishment of a class system, eschelon or heirarchy. But I wont go on a rant about psycho-socio-political philosophy here haha.
We're getting to the point we're the increase in knowledge is exponential (called the "jumping jesus phenomena" by 21st centuries most important but least heard of philosopher-thinker and IMHO genius - Robert Anton Wilson with "1 Jesus" being a unit of measurement of the ammount of knowledge amassed by humanity up to the time of the birth of 'jesus' - using the nomenclature of most units of measurement - like the watt or joule - after their inspiration or creator) - almost by the hour (Im guessing - I havent done the mathematical equation yet but im sure we're real close to increasing our knowledge by double every few hours, it will get to the point where it will be by the second, then milli-second - and we're already at a point in history where no one single person, in one feild can know absolutely everything there is to know about it because its physically impossible given the ammount of sheer datat! We'll reach an omega point someday.
Oh and I still have to ask - can I cancel the SW update? Its still at the same place hasn't moved an inch. Im going to back everything up atleast to a cloud and external first but I just wanna know to be safe before I cancel it and try the BIOSupdater.exe.

2. Yes. Kill that hanging SW Update. Someone commented that if it hadn't got a a DOS command window then it hadn't properly started (possibly blocked by an AV program).

So there is nothing i can do atm to fix this, no driver will fix this? so many problems with this laptop afterall if it comes to gaming. Also this link doesnt work, who is trying to solve this? -

My question would be if people have gotten switchable graphics to work on win 8.1 and if yes with which driver. I know people cant hear this anymore, but im kinda helpless. Thanks very much -

I've just updated to the latest bios and I think I know what's changed. Before I had to unplug and replug the power cord to get decent performance in any game, every single time. Since the update this hasn't happened to me anymore and I get good framerates every time. Also, the fans seem to keep running a minute or so after closing a game now, it used to stop almost immediately. 3Dmark scores seem to be down slightly (3dmark11: 3350, used to get about 3450) but that could be just a coincidence. Anyway, I'm pretty sure they did some tweaking to power management.
Dannemand likes this. -
As John has been pointing out several times, make sure to run the standalone BIOS updater outside of SW Update, as described in this thread. Also make sure to close any programs (including Antivirus) which might interfere with the process. That will reduce the risk of problems during the update. -
-
so checked these are written on the manual.
1. Right-click on the Desktop and select Configure Switchable Graphics from the popup menu.
2. click the Browse button and register the software and click the Apply button.
3. some of the functions of the registered program that require a high graphics performance will
run with the external graphics chipset without additional configuration.
hope it would be helpful -
Should I be worried about restarting now?
It says my current BIOS is04ADH (and the update is for P04ADH).
I have shut the lid a few times (but not restarted) and once it did leave me with a "Please Wait" for a while (before I pressed ctrl+alt+delete - and it brought up my the log in page to enter my PIN.
Its good to know that Samsung has decent external drive. Id stay away from Seagate though - especially the passport (its basically the thinnest plastic in the world between you and the drives/chips inside - pick it up to hard and it will break or atleast mine did).
Should I try re-starting? Or should I not risk it until I find a way to update my hundreds of gigabytes of data somewhere (I think I have a terabyte external somewhere, I just dread the ammount of time this will take lol - plus with Digital Audio Workstations you need to have everything just right, in the right place with the .peak files, .wav takes, and reaper session file otherwise it wont recognize everything (or anything I should say, it'll open saying it cannot locate any of the missing files) - so even if I did have all the files, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the takes I deleted from the session, and the ones I that were perfect/final that I need to keep - the way it works, even though the bad takes are gone from the session - their still on your drive in the same place as the takes you kept in your session that you liked, there would be no way to go through them all and tell whats what. You only clean up your directory after your session is finished (because it does not discriminate between good/bad takes, ones you kept/ones you edited/ones you deleted - so if you cleaned it up in an attempt to only keep the good takes like I did a few days ago - you end up deleting your whole song) and ready to be rendered/bounced to disc and sent to your mixing/mastering engineer (or if you mix/master yourself - bounced to a master disc to send off to the pressing plant). -
Hello guys,
I've got a 880z5e laptop and it's amazing!
Recently I've got a serious battery issue, hope you guys help me out to sort this.
Apparently, when the laptop is on and I need to charge it, I plug-in the mains and it charges but after 3 seconds it stops. It repeats the same thing over and over. The laptop charges normally only when is completely off and it does till 100%. I did almost everything, from reset the bios to factory settings to full wipe and re-install windows with every updated drivers.
The plug for the power is perfectly when I try to charge it, I don't have any idea of what is this issue, do you guys have any suggestions? -

2. Seagate now own the Samsung HDD business and the 3 platter 2.5" 2TB drive is made in what used to be Samsung's HDD factory. Both the Samsung and Seagate portable 2TB drives have the same basic drive inside but the Samsung one is in a thicker plastic box and the Seagate one is in a slimmer metal case.

Hey guys,
couple of days ago I have upgraded my NP870z5e with Samsung 840 pro and now this machine turned into a monsterCurrently I'm using Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and it is working like a charm. There is one boring problem that I couldn't find a working Intel HD graphics driver even AMD driver is up to date 13.12. I have tried 2 different Intel drivers but I couldn't change screen brightness after both of them. I highly appreciate if you guide me to a suitable driver.
Thanks in advance -
