Have any of you seen any definitive reporting from CES 2013 on the new Series 9 with the 1920x1080 screen? Is it the 15" model? Is it a PLS screen? Is it touch?

Inquiring minds want to know. :D

I also want to know. What the hell was that? It's like they showed it really quickly and only announced 1080P on stage. But no mention of touch makes me think they're leaving it out for the S9 and focusing on the S7. It's probably because they want to keep the S9 as their thin and elegant, and they can't quite pull that off with a touch panel.

Starting with Haswell, Intel is requiring all Ultrabook(tm) machines to have a touch panel. I am actually hoping the Series 9 they spoke of isn't Haswell, isn't touch, has a 15" 1080p PLS screen, and has standard DDR3 SoDIMM slots for the memory. If so, I will buy one.

I can understand Microsoft trying to force touch on everyone, but why Intel? Or maybe manufacturers can use Haswell in Ultrabook format machines but can't call them Ultrabooks nor get any Intel marketing subsidy. I doubt if most Series 9 users are worried by those details. If Intel get too difficult then Samsung could offer an AMD-powered Series 9, which would be enough power for many users.

Forcing everyone to buy a Touch screen seems very risky.

I wonder what the quality will be like.

    Scary to think about.

I like the touchscreens but their faults are that they're glossy (unless they have the film overlay) and add weight/thickness.

At 0.28 the Samsung rep confirms that the S9 will not be touch on the new model. I'm not sure if she's referring to the 13" or 15" but we can assume the same holds for both. I think the S9 is still high on my list since I'd rather have an anti-glare display over touch.

It seems Samsung is doing what they did last year. They will ship the new 1080p screen based Series 9 machines initially with Ivy Bridge. This is perfectly fine with me. If I can get the 15" with a premium screen that isn't touch, it fulfills my requirements. If I can get it with the silver mag case, even better. Love the silver.

Anyone see the pics at CES of the "white" series 9? Interesting look.

I may have been getting my hopes up too much about a dedicated GPU. Does anyone know if it is even possible to fit anything other than the onbaord Intell 4000 graphics into a machine like this? Could it be done with a slight few milometers more of thickness? Just curious.

Add a few more mm to the Series 9 and you get the new Series 7 with dedicated GPUs. See here for the dimensions. What's missing from the current line-up is a 15.0" model which would be a slightly thicker version of the 15" Series 9 which has a significantly smaller footprint than the 15.6" machines.

Hey John, I did see that one this morning. Thank you for the link. I was surprised that the new Series 7 got marginally heavier while losing its optical drive. It isn't much of a difference But I was hoping for something around 4.4 lbs, like the Sony S series.

I guess what I mean was re: the GPU, how closely they could stick to the current 15 Series 9, and include a GPU. Would it increase the weight substantially?

Weird I just realized I have been reading about the series 9 here since midway through the first generation.

I think Series 9 is safe from Intel's requirements on touch. This is because Series 9 is sometimes called Notebook especially on its box not Ultrabook. Samsung exclusively call Series 5 and 7 an Ultrabook.

Did you see Dual Display Series 9, one glossy touch on the back side and one retina like resolution and none touch in the front on IFA 2012 in Germany? You can see it here.

Beefing up the cooling system is the main challenge.

I fully expect Samsung to ship Series 9 machines with touch panels in the second half of 2013. In the meantime, I am hopefuly the disclosed 1080p panels are not touch, matte, and PLS or IPS.
