After Windows reinstall, two problems: No Fast Start and weird keyboard glitch

I received a Samsung NP530U3B-A01US Series 5 Ultrabook as a gift; after a few weeks the Hitachi hard drive started clicking and warned of imminent failure. After ordering a new hard drive from Newegg (a Western Digital) which proceeded to fail after trying a backup restore, I decided to go the clean install route and rebuild my computer from scratch. A couple days ago the new HDD arrived and I installed Windows, downloaded drivers, then started customizing my computer. Everything's going pretty well so far - the laptop runs much faster than before and it is nice to not have all the bloatware clogging up the joint.

All that said, I have two problems:

One, Fast Start doesn't work. There is no Samsung folder in All Programs and no Fast Start program, so I can only assume that it isn't part of Windows 7 or the drivers. I haven't downloaded any of the software here, so I'm wondering if Fast Start is part of one of those programs - I couldn't tell. I did Google "Samsung Fast Start" and found it on Softpedia.com and downloaded it, but when I tried to run it I get a failure notice that says "ERROR! kmdfmemio driver not installed." So I'm stalled on that front.

Two, the keyboard is acting wacky, and only just recently. Basically as I type it randomly sends the cursor back a few spots and screws up my typing. It doesn't always do this, but for whatever reason it does it at random moments - I'm not sure if it is my thumb bumping the touchpad or something else random like that. Obviously it is a bit of a hassle.

Any help would be mighty appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. OK, I just did both - we'll have to see on the touchpad as the problem wasn't always occuring.

As for Easy Settings, I installed it and then tried to open it and my computer froze. Restarted, tried again and the same thing happened. Even so, Fast Boot is included in Easy Settings but I don't think Fast Start is - it doesn't come up in a Start search.

Any ideas why it is freezing my computer? Any other software I should download?

Which versions of the software are you installing? (i) as provided with your computer; (ii) as on the Samsung download site; or (iii) as found by Easy Software Manager. For the touchpad driver newer is better, but I'm not convinced about Easy Settings.

I downloaded the software from the Samsung website, so I assume that is the newest.

    I didn't download Easy Software Manager - should I?

    Anyone, anyone?

Another problem is that Sleep and Hibernate don't seem to work. When I haven't been using the computer for a bit, the display goes dark but the computer is still running. I can't get it back running without holding the power down.

So there are a host of seemingly related issues: Fast Start doesn't work; closing the lid doesn't do anything except shut the display off; it doesn't go into Hibernate or Sleep, but instead shuts the display off and it isn't possible to revive it unless I force a shutdown; Easy Settings and Fast Boot won't run but instead crash (freeze) the system.

Other than that, the computer seems fine - it is running smoothly and the video works MUCH better than before the re-install. I hope I don't have to re-install everything to get the above working; I'm hoping it is a simple software package or a couple tweaks, but I'm not sure what to do.

Now it is MUCH worse. I downloaded Software Manager which recommended that I update the BIOS. After doing so, the computer can't boot - it starts to load and then shuts off, then turns on again and starts to load for a second, then off again. I don't know what to do. I can get into BIOS but that's it - I can't load to the Recovery DVD. tried to Load Setup Defaults in BIOS and nothing changed.

To be honest, I hate this frickin' Ultrabook - never again, Samsung.

(Seeing as I'm not getting more replies here I'll start a new thread on this much larger problem)

maybe you enabled UEFI in your bios. Easy Settings does not work with UEFI. If you do, you have to reinstall windows. happend to me too.

I also got the sleep issue. When I enable hybrid sleep it works fine, tough.

Ugh, I don't want to deal with doing another reinstall.

How do you enable hybrid sleep?

By the way, the keyboard seems fine now but sleep/hibernate/fast start still don't work. Sleep and hibernate are grayed out in power options.

Is there any other way around doing a reinstall?

I just checked BIOS and UEFI is enabled; when I tried to disable it, Windows won't boot and it ends up in that loop. What should I do? Do I need to reinstall Windows with UEFI disabled? Can I do so while keeping my files, especially the 90 GB of music I transferred over?

yes, you need to reinstall windows, but you should be able to keep your files. just install the new windows version over the old one.

OK thanks, that is very helpful.

A quick question: Do I need to disable UEFI before reinstalling Windows via booting to the CD? Or can i just reinstall while in Windows via the CD, and will UEFI be somehow disabled in the process?

I would recommend disabling UEFI at the BIOS level before you reinstall Windows. As I understand it, it will affect the drivers installed to work with the hardware. That's why you hit a problem when trying to disable UEFI after Windows was installed.

Ugh - more frustration. I tried doing just that, John, but when I booted from the recovery disc, it asked me to start Windows normally and upgrade then. The problem is that I can't load Windows with UEFI disabled, so I had to enable it to get to Windows and I'm assuming that if I upgrade with UEFI enabled I'm not going to solve my problem.

I'll try, but if it doesn't work than it looks like I'm faced with a complete re-installation and having to re-load all of my files.

So I reinstalled Windows without disabling UEFI and it didn't work. I'm going to have to do a clean reinstall and hope it works.

I would hope that a clean install without UEFI enabled will get things working better. At the moment UEFI is one of those good ideas that isn't fully debugged.

Alright, so I just did a clean reinstall of Windows with UEFI disabled and sleep and hibernate are back in action! I haven't installed Fast Start, but I can only assume that that will work.

Now I just have to deal with a jumpy cursor (again) - although it fixed last time with either the Touchpad or Audio driver installation.

Anyhow, thanks for the help! Hopefully we'll have smooth sailing going forward...

I confirm, disable UEFI and reinstall Windows on the hard drive partition with gparted to have a hard drive in the MBR format
