I liked better the Series 5 Ultra name instead Ativbook, but hopefully this also mean availability very soon.

I think this is a terrible name and a bad marketing move. Instead of Series 9, now it's ATIV Book 9, doesn't exactly sound catchy. The name should be simple and short. And what does ATIV stand for anyway? Can you imagine Mercedes renaming the S Class to TAVI Box S?

I'm simply not a fan of the new names. series 9 rolls off your tounge a lot easier than ativ book 9.

Unfortunately, while we know who makes the Series 9, the majority of notebook users don't know.

The news is no surprise. We had seen the Ativ Book models on the pci34.fishingtree.com website (which went offline a couple of weeks ago) although it was unclear whether both naming systems would co-exist.

I presume that it's to try to get a distinctive branding like Galaxy has done in phones and tablets. At least it's not a long name that is difficult to remember or spell. :D

I expect the model numbering will carry on as before - it's been around for a few years.

I have one question. Why does the new black ATIV book 6 have the same specs. as the Samsung Series 7 Chronos when the Samsung website says the ATIV book 8 is the same as the Samsung Series 7 Chronos. Does anyone know why?

If you look closer you will notice that they some major differences in specs.
First of all the ATIV Book 6 will replace the old Series 5. The replacement of Chronos Series 7 will be the ATIV Book 8.

    Some noticeable differences are
ATIV Book 6 only comes with the AMD 8770 graphics and 2W Speakers
ATIV Book 8 will have the AMD 8870 and 4W Speakers

Most likely the ATIV Book 8 will also come with SSD and 16GB RAM configurations.

So do you believe it will be in my best interest to hold off from purchasing a Samsung Series 7 Chronos, and just wait for the ATIV Book 8 to roll out? Seeing as though Samsung JUST recategorized they're entire notebook lineup. I don't want to buy a product (Series 7 Chronos) that will be immediately obsolete. Also, the new matte black aluminum body of the ATIV books are hard to turn down ;)

You said it yourself, you do not want a notebook to soon to be obsolete, Chronos is already dead and you prefer the black color over the silver.
SO I think you are getting the ATIV Book 8 :)

Whatever you buy will be superseded before long. However, no longer produced is not the same as no longer usable. Purchasing decisions should be based on price and functionality (and in that respect I agree that backlit black keys are more usable).

A further variable at the moment is Haswell lurking around the corner. Haswell promises further improvements in power efficiency but performance gains are likely to be modest.
