    Hi all,

Would you guys please tell me what's happening to my laptop? I tried cinebench on this laptop with a i7 3635qm cpu and the score is just about the same as an i5 3317u. During the test, the task manager never showed the cpu to run more than 50% on all cores, and the clock speed was around at 1.18. It never went beyond that. Is there any extreme throttling issue with my machine?

    Thanks,

well, I ran some more tests and benchmarks on the system including geekbench, orthos cpu stress test. And none of those tests was able to get the cpu to run past the 50% utilization. Thus, all my scores are about 50% lower than benchmarks of equivalent machines. Geekbench is ~1200 for 32 bit single core and 4440 for 32 bit multiple core. I7 3630 scores around 7000. ANd orthos failed to stress the cpu really bothers me. Did I get a defective machine? Any help is really appreciated guys. Thank you.

Have you enabled the Silent mode or Eco mode? Either will limit the CPU speed so make sure they are not enabled.

I recommend using the Samsung Optimized power profile. Go into the advanced power settings and check the Processor Power Management > Maximum Processor State. IIRC this should be 99%. If it is below about 90% then that is probably the cause of your problem.

Also run HWiNFO which has a useful display of CPU speed for each core. Then run wPrime and select the number of threads in the options to see whether the maximum CPU speed varies according to the number of threads.

    Thank you for the reply

I was under eco mode but then I turned it off and the benchmark didn't improve. I then switched to high performance mode ans samsung optimized mode but still the same. I haven't looked into cpu state in the profile yet. I'll do it in the morning and see how it goes with wprime also.

I wonder if turning off Eco mode didn't reset the power settings properly.

You could check if another version of the Samsung Settings program is available. Even reinstalling the one you have may reset the power plans.

I was finally able to set the CPU to run at max power. It was a combination of silent mode, eco mode, and power settings not sticking to specifications. I think windows 8.1 isn't fully compatible with the version of sw setting that I have. It just keeps switch to the lowest setting mode regardless of my manual control. Thank you so much for helping me.

Do I understand that you had installed Windows 8.1?

If so, you could go hunting for the version of Settings provided with the newest models of the NP940X3G (but I don't guarantee that it will fix your problem and not break anything else).

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 when it came out. And it broke several drivers in my machine, mainly super dark screen with no brightness control and this. But I've since been able to fix each of them, and you've just helped me solve the problem of the machine constantly switching to lowest power mode (despite the fact that the fan still comes on full power regardless of modes) Thank you so much :)
