I have a Samsung Q210 that I picked up by the screen and it's like I shorted something out. Only the top half of the screen displays now. Can anyone advise me on the best action to take. Is it the screen, inverter, motherboard that would need to be replaced? Have I got a laptop only fit for spares?

I would check the cable serving the display starting with the connectors at each end. It's definitely not the inverter (otherwise the whole display would be black) and you can check the mainboard by connecting an external display.
