I've never owned a Thinkpad so I can't make a direct comparison. I've now had my X60 for 7 months, including both international travel and being carried in a backpack on a bicycle. I have no overall concerns about durability, but (i) the right hand end of the left touchpad button is no longer clicking like it used to (but still works) and the metal finish on the button seems to be wearing off (an indication of heavy usage); and (b) there are some marks on the palm rest where it touches the display surround during travel (I had identical problems with my Asus W3A).

I've had no problems with the software and drivers. The X60 doesn't come overloaded with software but two applications take a significant bite (~14MB) out of the hard disk space: (i) AV Station Now!; and (ii) System Restore. See another thread for more details. These partitions are hidden from normal Windows applications.

Samsung ships a full DVD containing every single WHCL driver you'd need in case of reinstallation. As an alternative, you can download them from samsung's website. I can't say much about Vista though, and honsetly, I don't really care, because I don't see anything Vista could give over XP. It would just eat up much more CPU cycle. HOWG.

A look at the Samsung X60's hardware reveals mostly standard components: Intel main chipset, network and wireless; ATI graphics; Ricoh cardbus and memory card reader; Synaptics touchpad; Broadcom Bluetooth and SENS modem. If you are worried about Vista driver compatibility then check if the above components are supported.
