    Hey everybody..

So I've had this NP700Z5A-S09US notebook for a little over 3 years now, and just recently I got problems in which once the notebook would enter sleep mode, it would freeze. Sometimes the mouse would be frozen, but other times I could move it around. Either way, I could not open up any programs, and I would have to manually turn the notebook off/on again for it to work. When I finally reset it, I sometimes (not always) get the message: "The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again?", to which I need to delete the restoration data.

I was later told I need to do a system restore. However, when I try to open up System Restore, I get an error saying that System Protection is turned off. So I found the Samsung Recovery Solution 5 and decided to try and use a basic restore. Thought it might have fixed something, but it seems to have deleted my entire data drive D:, but C: is okay. Is there any way I can recover this or am I sol? I have 3 years' worth of university files on it..

I should add that when I first got the notebook, I partitioned it to have my data on the D: drive and OS on the C: drive. Ironically enough, I did this under the impression that in the case of a virus, I could reset the OS and keep all of my data.

Silly me for thinking that a basic restore would only affect the files in the C: drive.. Which is what I've read it to do. By the way, the virus (or whatever is wrong with the notebook) is still here. When my computer sleeps, I still have to reset it. Now I'm just missing 250+GB of data in addition to that problem.

Sorry for the bitterness. I do appreciate any help.

Okay so I tried using a program called TestDisk, and now my computer won't boot up at all. I get the "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." It wants a Windows installation disk, but the notebook never even came with one from what I remember. I am now forced to use my phone.

If there is only one physical drive with two partitions you still take a huge chance with data on just the second partition. As you can see from when you used the Samsung restore. Even with a second physical drive you still always need to back up your data. I have my originals and still keep two local sets of data backup.

With it being a HDD, even with the now single partition, the drive would have been reset and started writing to the front of the drive. You could probably have some success with a data retrieval company. I am not too sure how successful some of the software out there would be but it could be worth a try.

Have you tried booting with a previously known good hardware configuration from the F8 menu?

So you have 3 years of important files without backup on a factory installed machine and you just did your first factory reset? You like to live dangerously...

The Samsung Recovery, if you use the basic recovery function it will restore to the state as you bought the machine.

Okay so after a week of toying around with different Linux-based OS's, I managed to recover (at least most) of the info from my data partition onto an external HDD. Now I've been trying to get a recovery disc so that I can fix Windows 7. However, when I contacted Samsung Support, they said that need a serial number, but mine has worn off of my laptop over the past 3 years. Any ideas on what I can do next?

If you have your Windows key then you should be able to get a full copy of Windows from here. If you have lost the Windows key (or it has worn off) then you will need the Samsung disc because it is pre-activated to work on Samsung hardware. Perhaps a photo of the worn label or a photo of the BIOS screen will be enough to satisfy Samsung support.

Samsung is sending me a Windows installation disc. However, when performing a disc diagnostic test on the HDD via Parted Magic, I get a complete read failure. I was told in another forum that this indicates that I will need to buy a new drive. Would that be the case, or is it fixable by simply reformatting the HDD through the Windows installation disc? I figure I would try out the disc first anyway, but if the drive is basically physically dead, then I should probably start looking into buying a new notebook now.

Drives usually are way cheaper than a new notebook. then again not too sure if what you have meets your needs. Not worth sinking money into it if it just really does not work for you.

Check the HDD manufacturer's website for a diagnostic utility to give a definitive opinion on the drive's health.

And another HDD is a prudent investment even if the HDD in the computer is OK: A bare drive can be put into a USB enclosure and used for the backups.

Search for "legal Windows 7 downloads". It used to be possible to get the ISO file for creating the installation disc from digitalriver but I don't know if that is still the case.
