I did a stupid thing. I was trying to troubleshoot why itunes' mobile device service kept chewing up so many cpu cycles so I decided to restart windows in diagnostic mode from msconfig. Unfortunately, restarting in that mode got me to the password screen where I enter my password and then Windows doesn't continue to boot after.

I have tried Shift-F8 to get into advanced boot options but have been unsuccessful. Recovery hasn't yielded me any options except the nuclear option of cleaning the entire system. I simply want to login to safe mode and change stupid msconfig back to rebooting in normal mode.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! :)

NEVERMIND - got it. Rather than pecking at the F8 key with the Shift key held down, holding both down gets me where I wanted to go. Meh...
