After doing a windows anytime upgrade to ultimate I can't seem to be able to enable/disable my wireless card using the Fn+F12. It seems permanently enabled. The little light is on inside the button but pressing the 'Fn' combination does nothing. So I have checked the rest of the buttons and this is the worrying result ... ( OSD = on screen display)
Fn+F1 does nothing, no OSD (Settings ??)![]()
Fn+F2 does nothing, no OSD (Screen Brightness '-')![]()
Fn+F3 does nothing, no OSD (Screen Brightness '+')![]()
Fn+F4 does nothing, no OSD (Swop monitors .. i have external Connected)![]()
Fn+F5 Works , but no OSD to let me know the status ( Trackpad)![]()
Fn+F6 Works with OSD (Mute)![]()
Fn+F7 Works with OSD (Volume '-')![]()
Fn+F8 Works with OSD (Volume '+')![]()
Fn+F9 Does nothing, no OSD ( Keylight '-')![]()
Fn+F10 Does nothing , no OSD ( Keylight '+')![]()
Fn+F11 Does nothing, no OSD ( Fan operation)![]()
Fn+F12 Does nothing, no OSD ( Wireless enable/disable)![]()
Am i missing something ?? Samsung site has something about this happening but only refers to XP

You have to reinstall Easy Settings or whatever programme that controls this extra functionality.

UPDATE:
Been on the phone and remote desktop with samsung. There is a piece of software called easy display manager which is supposed to control these keys. Except that Samsung does not have it available to download from their website ( not available for the NP700Z5A series ), and that where the support ends. I would have to do a complete restore back to factory to get this functionality back. Something I cannot do because the point of my WATU was so i could join a domain.
If there is someone out there who could track and isolate this file I'd be helpful .. as I already have 1 DOA to my credit .. going through the whole situation again is not something I really want to entertain.
Update 2
found this readme in Easy Settings .. "[0409] ; ENG / UK, HKG
ItemName=Easy Settings
ItemDesc=This program makes using and configuring the system easier. Use this program to configure the network, power management, display and sound settings. To use the Fn keys properly, the Easy Settings program must be installed in advance."
May be able to recover functionality , If I understood what they mean by 'advance !' .. advance of what ??? -
The fn keys are handled by dmhkcore.exe. Does that file exist in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Easy Settings\ directory?
-
yes , it exists .. and it's running as a process too. The volume OSD shows up when that's turned up or down , muted eg so I guess it's working to an extent. The F keys also work so it's definitely a software issue. It's the note of "advanced" that is intriguing me. Clearly someone knows that it has to be done in advance because they put it down in the notes.
-
dmhkcore.exe does not work properly if you are running as a standard user. Kill the process and restart it as admin. see windows 7 - Why aren't the Samsung Series 7 fn keys able to change screen brightness? - Super User
-
Albeit only as a 32 bit process !?
-
I'm trolled, seriously by Samsung. Why doesn't it work in standard user accounts?
-
It's not a bad effort .. , unfortunately didn't work for me. I logged into domain and locally as admin and no difference. I was admin prior to the WATU.
-
Well, if you've got a 64bit version of the exe, you could run that instead. Let us know where you found it.
-
If that's the case it is actually part of Easy Settings. Perhaps uninstall it and manually delete all contents of the installation folder before reinstalling again?
-
-
Programming needs some serious work I believe.
-
Absolutely. I can't believe that 4 - 5 apps that they schedule to start on login require UAC elevation.
-
Which is why I unlocked the SuperUser account for Windows 7.
-
I prefer to be slapped in the face every time I reboot and be reminded of the quality of the software...
-
You are really... for the LULz
-
I've tried the uninstall route several times , pound to a pinch of poop that there are a bunch of registry entries that reside. If these can be id'd ! ....
-
As an update to this , i have reformatted and started the whole install process again. I don't think it's the WATU that is the issue. I've managed to get ultimate running. I was installing a bunch of updates yesterday when the problem happened again. So i did a system restore and i'm now going through the windows update bit by bit to find out which KB update is causing the issue
-
Am i seriously the only 1 here seeing this issue ? Everything has been ok for the last week and now suddenly i reboot and have lost control of all the fn+F keys ..
Reinstall easy settings gives me a bit fat F*** all back. The only way i have made this work is a factory reset.
As well as easy settings having a mind of it's own on each reboot .. this laptop (no 2 i might add) is one of the biggest let downs i have suffered in recent memory. -
I have the same problem.
when I kill the dmhkcore.exe and run it as administrator its work again but only until I try the wifi (Fn+F12) than its:
1. Stop working
Or
2. lunch the Easy Settings App & after I close it, the Fn stop working.
The speakers func are always working.
I try to install the last version of Easy Settings, No change
Chronos HP700Z5A Fn+Fx limited functionality
