A problem many Samsung users face, Fn buttons on Vista 64 bit do not work since Easy Display Manager only supports 32 bit.

Well, there is hope, possibly :)

Have a look at the below link, 7th from the bottom you will find Easy Display Manager 2.2.10.0 Win Vista (64bit).

    EDIT: 20th July 2009 - FAO R510,Q310 and R610 owners

I am updating this thread to reflect some findings regarding 64 bit support on some samsung laptop models.

It has become apparent that some models suffer from instability under any 64 bit operating system when 4gb of memory is used. Crashes occur when using the FN + Brightness / Backlight buttons or installing nvidia gfx drivers.

The Samsung R610 suffered from this problem but was fixed via a bios update. I believe samsung fixed this for this model because they offer 64 bit software for it. (For R610 users, please update your BIOS to the latest version to use 64 bit operating systems with 4GB)

With other models for example, R510 and Q310 samsung may not update the bios to fix the 4GB memory bug because they do not officially support 64 bit on these models.

I think this is a bad decision since the R610 features identical hardware (Intel GM45 + ICH9M) to the R510 and Q310. It would not be too hard for them to update these models also.

For those with the R510 and Q310, to use a 64 bit os you must not have 4GB or ram installed because the BIOS suffers from a bug which will cause crashes.

My attemps to get samsung to update my R510 bios is still ongoing and for the Q310, one user reported that samsung's response was,

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5090247&postcount=21

"there are no plans to update the BIOS to use these Operating Systems"

Oh well...how about fixing the buggy bios instead?

    EDIT: 26th August 2009

Samsung have emailed me a fix for my R510 which successfully enables me to use all 64 bit operating systems with 4GB of ram.

Thank you Samsung for the excellent customer support.

So even though samsung do not officially support 64 bit on some models, if you send them a nice email they may provide you with an unofficial fix :)

R510 users, if you wish to use 64 bit Vista/Win7 with 4GB of ram i suggest you contact samsung for the bios fix. I will not distribute the fix as i do not have permission.

    Kudos to Samsung!

Good find. Samsung have finally got round to providing some 64 bit applications. There's a good selection on that page. It may say R610 st the top, but it is 99% probably that the Samsung software packages will work on the other Samsung notebooks.

not working properly with Windows 7 on my x360, installation went smoothly but when I use FN + any of the hot keys the system would just instantly reboot, I#ll do more testing.

Edit: Problem solved I had to Select Compatibility to "Vista Service Pack 2" on the .exe file and it now works without crashing.

After much testing i find that the x64 bit 2.2.10.0 is unstable in Vista Home Premium x64. It works but can randomly cause a reboot when using the fn + function buttons.

I can also confirm that under Win7 RC (64-bit) that FN + any of the kotkeys = reboot.

For me even compatibility mode fails to work.

I have found another 64 bit Easy Display Manager with version number 2.3.2.4, but it does not work any better.

For those wishing to give this version a go, here is the link.

However, whilst browsing the Samsung Hong Kong site i found an even more recent version which may be of interest :p

Easy Display Manager v2.3.8.0 (Vista 32/64)

This version seems to have integrated the 32 bit and 64 bit installers into a single package. Meaning you no longer have to download seperate installers for 32 bit / 64 bit.

I have only tested 2.3.8.0 in Vista Home Premium 32 bit. It is working well so far.

Any dare devils out there wishing to try these, please post your results.

Im afraid that on my r510 the results are disappointing when using any of the 64 bit version of EDM.

Using the fn + brightness / backlight on/off can cause a reboot.

If only i could change the thread title smiley face to :(

I will continue to look out for newer version and test them. If i have sucessful results this place will be the first to know.

Although i am curious, do the 64 bit versions work on any of the laptops that have the option to download the 64 bit version?

I'm a R610 owner (1920x1080 version) and x64 just does not sit well on here.

My main issues are with the nvidia drivers which I think are causing all the lockups and reboots. I've also tried nvidias native drivers with no improvement in stability for x64.

I've already emailed samsung about the stability of their x64 drivers and Win7 drivers, with the classic "please keep an eye on the website for new realeases..."

We shall see what happens when Win7 hits RTM which is not that far off.

defraguk, how much memory does your laptop have?

If you are running a 2x2GB setup, can you take out a stick, so you are now running on 2GB and report on your stability issues in x64, is it stable with 2GB?

ichiban06, If applicable can you do the same, run with only 2GB in win7 / vista. Does pressing the fn+brightness up/down/backlight cause a crash with only 2GB?

    Thanks

love to try, but I need a stable laptop at the moment so sticking with vista x32 ultimate for now. But I do run 2 x 2gb memory. I still stick with my gut feelings that it is the onboard nvidia and how it has been used by samsung that is causing the issues as all problems happen after the display drivers have been loaded. One thing I didn't try though was Win 7 x32..... but that kinda defeats the object of this exercise.

My reply taken from the below thread,

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=382622

I have my doubts that it is a compatibility issue.

Your model laptop has the same motherboard chipset as the r510 and q310, which is the intel mobile 4 series (GM45/ICH9m) with either the 4500mhd gfx or in your case an nvidia gfx.

I myself was experiencing reboots when FN + brightness up/down or backlight on/off is pressed in vista 64/win7 RC 64.

However another problem i have is that all 64 bit linux operating systems crash and reboot when the X server (graphical server) starts.

I was able to use linux to pinpoint the problem to the BIOS, as kernel logs indicate that the 4GB of memory in my laptop isnt being mapped correctly.

So i took a 2GB stick out on my laptop, so only running with 2GB and guess what?

First, all 64 bit linux operating systems work perfectly.

Secondly in Vista 64 and win7 RC 64, FN + brightness up/down and backlight no longer cause the system to crash.

I have tested all my memory sticks extensively and am positve they are fine.

Interestingly, under linux i issued the command cat /proc/mtrr to view the memory mtrr tables and compared 2GB to 4GB.

The problem i can see in my case is that 4GB is a mess and the 32mb dedicated protion of memory for the gfx card is not being declared by the BIOS.

Vista and win7 RC 64, must be remapping the memory tables hence in my case the extra stability, however FN+brightness / backlight must be accessing the video in someway to cause the hard reboot.

The only way to fix this is through a BIOS update.

So to test this theory, you (or anyone else) have 2 options.

    1) Run Win7 RC 64 or Vista 64 with 2GB of memory. Test EDM 64 bit.

If EDM still crashes or your system is unstable your problem lies elsewhere.

    2) Try running a 64 bit linux live CD such as Ubuntu 9.04 with 4GB of memory.

If it crashes, then most likely memory mapping is the issue. You can view the kernel logs to find out, but will have to make the kernel boot with the option mem=4096M so it does not crash.

Issue the command in a terminal, dmesg > file

This will write the contents of the kernel debug messages to a file in your home folder called file. Then use gedit to view the file, look for any messages that say BIOS memory mapping. Or attach the file here so i can read it.

If you want to see how your memory is being mapped,

Open a terminal and type the command, cat /proc/mtrr

Alternatively see if the live cd boots with 2gb.

So, if you own the following models,

    X360
    Q310
R610 - Issue resolved, update bios to latest version.
R510 - Issue resolved, contact samsung for bios update

The cause of your stability issues when running 64 bit vista or windows 7 rc with 4GB of ram could be related to a buggy bios, specificially incorrect memory mapping.

I would appreciate anyone with the above models to test this theory

i'm an owner of the r510 and installed win7 64bit yesterday. i tried to install any of the drivers provided by samsung and had no success. even the edm failed at the installation. so i'm wondering why you guys could have crahes by scaling the brightness since this doesn't work whitout the drivers? how did you manage to even install the drivers under win7?
then i tried to install the newest nvidia drivers but this made my system crash. then i looked for a fix and found this thread. as i read that samsung has an unofficial bios fix, i tried to contact the german support (since i'm from austria). however they just told me that they didn't provide any 64bit support for the r510 and said nothing about any bios update (i'm currently running the 07li bios version).
so i'm desperately asking you, fizzyfanta, if you could hand me out the bios fix, since i really want to run win7 64bit on the r510

    Hello angelag1.

I am posting a link to the below thread for reference, as much of my progress with the R510 was reported there.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=382622

You will also find that a link to the R510 bios file from samsung was made public in that thread (post number 53) by another R510 user, who acquired the link from Samsung Customer support. This therefore confirms that samsung are happy to distribute the file.

I will post the direct link here for your convenience.

    http://www.samsungpc.com/gb/support/...S_64bitdev.EXE

The file is a dos executable file, in order to update your bios you will need to create a dos bootable flash stick or alternative, then run the file via the dos command prompt.
