Hello. In the recovery solution program it gives as estimated required time for a complete restore of 8:18. Do you know if this means 8 hours 18 minutes or 8 minutes and 18 seconds? Would a restore usually take minutes or hours?
Also would this complete restore be as good as a clean vista install? I'm pretty sure my laptop didn't come with a windows vista CD so this seems to be my only option. Any help would be much appreciated.

I recently did a restore for the Samsung R20 and recall that it was minutes, not hours.
Although 8 minutes sounds very quick, a recent HDD has a data transfer rate of at least 60MB/s, ie 3.6GB/minute. That will be more than halved because data is being read from the recover partition and then written to the C drive, but assuming 1.5GB/minute means 12GB (the correct order of magnitude for a basic Windows installation) in 8 minutes. So 8 minutes is plausible and it is definitely not 8 hours.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know also if a restore is as effective as a clean reinstall?

I just did the recovery and it was very quick but now my laptop won't boot. It gets past the samsung loading screen the after the boot from CD screen it goes blank then the computer restarts. Any ideas how to fix this?
I'm dual booting with ubuntu and usually I get an option screen to choose between windows and ubuntu but this doesn't come up. -

A birthday restore will bring back all the Samsung bloat-ware you originally had, it will take about 15-20mins, a clean OS install is always be preferable, but you will need a vista dvd, my first Samsung an Q210 came with an full samsung branded vista dvd and an software/drivers dvd also, but my new R590 did not come with any.

I'll have to have a look through the original box and see if I can find a vista disc. Any ideas how to fix the problem I posted about above?

I dont have any experience with multi os system, the Samsung forum does not get a lot of traffic, so it might be wise to create a thread in the main vista/xp section about your boot problem you will be more likely to get a fix, but dont mention samsung in the title just keep the thread title generic to get as many views as possible.

Thanks I'll try postin in the main forum.

Why don't you check out the Ubuntu forums. For these boot up problems for dual boot machines, it usually has something to do with grub, grub2, or some such. Don't quote me on these stuff though 'coz I'm not particularly experienced with Ubuntu, but the people at the Ubuntu forums are top notch at helping people out.
