If so, how did you do it?

I'm a newbie here - I just picked up a NP700Z5C and am desperately looking for a way to install Ubuntu 12.10 (or other distribution if I must). I just found this forum and have been digging through all the great material on here about the Series 7 looking for any clues on Linux installation.

I've read the horror stories of people bricking the bios while attempting the installation and would like to avoid doing this if possible. I haven't heard of anyone getting Linux to run on one of these yet.

I'd really like to install Ubuntu in a dual-boot configuration if possible. If I get desperate I may just have to wipe Windows and install it by itself.

    Any fellow Linux-ers out there?

    Thanks

I am currently running an NP700z5C with Ubuntu.
It works very well apart from a few niggles and I had to implement a few patches.
Before you try to install Ubuntu make sure that fast Boot (UEFI support) is disabled in the BIOS or you WILL brick your machine. Guess How I know? Mine is just back from Samsung with a new motherboard because of that. If you search Google you will find more about the issue.
Having said that Samsung repaired my machine without question and I am now back and running.
There are a few great supports sites dedicated to Samsung and Linux
Search for "Linux on my Samsung"

Did you install it as a dual-boot os?

How did you go about installing it?

I installed from a DVD and it is dual boot with the original windows 7.
After installation everything was good and I used it for about 2 weeks doing many things and updating kernels etc. It survived numerous reboots and trials.
Then I turned on fast boot (UEFI) and all still worked for several more days until I decided to boot from the same DVD again to check out something (I had mistakenly upgraded to a beta kernel and wanted to reinstall as a downgrade It bricked before I could even get to the install / try Ubuntu screen.
I have just had the machine returned last night. it took 3 weeks to get me a new motherboard, but it is working well again.

My next task is to figure out how to get the best use of the SSD in Ubuntu. A project for this weekend!

Did you install with secure boot enabled or disabled?

From what I hear, we really need to leave fast boot disabled. It sounds like that is what leads to bricking the Bios.

Do you have a link to the installation steps you used?

As stated above, I installed wit secure boot disabled using the standard procedure from the Ubuntu DVD.
Alll was well I then enabled secure boot and all remained well through Kernel updates etc until I tried to boot of the live CD with secure boot enabled, then the laptop bricked.
I will not be enabling secure boot again on this laptop
The BIOS version at the time of the crash was 004
