After upgrading to Windows 8.1, laptop does not wake up when the lid is opened

This was fine in Windows 7 and with Fastboot enabled, it was very fast

any idea how I can achieve this in Windows 8.1?

This problem has been discussed in the context of other Samsung notebooks upgraded to Windows 8.1 and, as far as I know, no solution has been identified.

    Newer doesn't necessarily mean better!

It is indeed unfortunate that Samsung doesn't make Fast Start (wake-up on lid open) an option as they did in Easy Settings.

But you CAN actually get Fast Start in Win8.x if you are willing to use one of the earlier Settings versions: 2.0.x have Fast Start enabled, while Settings versions 2.1.x and newer have it disabled. Another benefit of these earlier versions of Settings is that they stll have tabs to control Battery Life Extender and ExpressCache, which the newer versions lack.

I personally prefer to have Fast Start disabled: The slowly blinking power LED tells me that my computer is sleeping (not turned off) and it only awakens when I deliberately press the power button.

See this discussion with member go45cvi for more details. There is also some coverage of it in our Settings thread.

well I had the problem that with old settings (2.0.x.x) fn Keys don't work. It works only with newer ones 2.1.x.x

    It's a compromise then :)

I can use Settings versions 2.0.x as well as the newer (2.1.x, 2.2.x and 2.3.x) and they all work with Fn-keys. Other members reported the same in the Settings thread I linked. But of course that doesn't guarantee that it is the same on all models.

The original Win8.1 (and the consumer preview before that) was indeed not compatible with 2.0.x versions of Settings, but Microsoft addressed that with later updates. Maybe some of Samsung's BIOS updates helped too.

Did you try and install all Microsoft and Samsung updates before installing Settings (or re-installing it after performing the updates)?

I use settings 2.0.0.55 and fast start (and everything else) works in W8. But alas, I could not get it to work with Intel Rapid Start Technology (IRST) in W8, in fact it doesn't appear to be part of the haswell chipset at all. So I can't get wake on lid open from completely powered off like I had in W7 on my old X3B. Instead I have my laptop set to only hibernate after 6 hours of sleep on battery. My greatest concern is I will wear out the tiny power button if I press it too much, but I'm probably being paranoid.

    @Ripcord999:

I looked through your original Win8.1 install thread (which I admittedly didn't follow closely towards the end). A couple of thoughts came to mind:

    1) You mentioned here that some drivers didn't install after the Win8.1 installation. Which drivers were they? In particular, did Chipset drivers install properly (they control the "mother tree" and thus all other devices)? Also, did you install any Win7 drivers or Easy Settings (could cause problems, even after uninstall)?

    2) After installing Settings, you often have to restart Windows TWICE (including login and waiting a few minutes) in order for everything to work properly.

    3) Settings takes awhile to load after user login before Fn-keys will work, sometimes several minutes, depending on how much else is working in the background. It generally takes longer in Win8.1 than Win8 because it does more background churn. If it takes extremely long, re-installing Settings can sometimes help. So can installing and ExpressCache and running its boot optimizer (bootopt.bat).

    4) I recommend you try the newest Settings 2.0.x versions (since you want Fast Start). Version 2.0.0.55 is available in SW Update under Win8 drivers for model NP880Z5E-X03CA. Version 2.0.0.74 is available in SW Update under Win7 drivers for model NP900X3F-K02CA (in the Win8 folder inside the Easy Settings 2.0.0.74 package). Uninstall the existing version first (and restart), then follow the advise in this post.

    5) As mentioned in my last post, make sure you have all the latest Microsoft and Samsung updates (including BIOS) before you install Settings.

    Hi @Dannemand

    Thanks for the feedback

    [
I had some issues with the drivers, Basically what I did was I tried installing the drivers that were required (from SW update). Some went through and some didn't. right now I don't know which all failed

After reading your comments in one of the Latency thread, I didn't install the Bluetooth and wiFi drivers and left it to Windows 8.1 default

    I right now have installed
    Express Cache
    IRST
S Agent( don't know who to kill this. I know I can disable this in scheduled tasks )
    Chipset Driver
NVidia Graphics driver (I have dual graphics)
    Sound Driver

the Settings SW which was was included for my model didn't enable the fn Key. Then as @JohnRatsey mentioned, I downloaded the latest settings for one of the other models. This enabled the fn keys. The Settings version I installed is "Settings_2.2.0.5"

Like I mentioned earlier, the fn keys never worked irrespective of time. But with new version, it worked

I have now installed Settings 2.2.0.5. I will try going back to 2.0.0.55

I have all the drivers from MS (via Windows Update), Bios up to date. Regarding Samsung updates, the one's offered via SW update is for Windows 8 and not Win 8.1 which some of the drivers complain that they are too old when trying to install

Once again I thank you very much and John for taking time in answering my concerns.

    Thank you for the update.

You made good choices there -- or at least the same I would have made

Disabling the sAgent scheduled task is the best you can do. Strangely, some versions of SW Update load the agent with a service (SW Update Service) and others rely on this scheduled task. So even with the sAgent task disabled, you may find a "SW Update Agent" task running in the background after login, if you have since updated to a version that includes the service.

John is spot on that you have to hunt in SW Update (using the Find Model feature) in order to find the latest versions of various drivers and utilities, including Settings. Basically, I would recommend:

    A) EITHER the newest version 2.3.x, which officially supports Win8.1, but does NOT have Samsung Fast Start Mode, ExpressCache and BLE. The latest I've seen and tested is version 2.3.0.17, which is available in SW Update under Win8.1 drivers for model NP940X5J.

    B) OR the newest version 2.0.x, which has Samsung Fast Start Mode (hard coded, always on) and ExpressCache and BLE. It is true that these versions did not originally support Win8.1 (including Fn-keys, as noted here after my first test of 8.1, and by others too). But later Microsoft updates generally have made them compatible. I would suspect other issues if you cannot get them working, but of course it is possible that something is different on your model. In any case would I recommend the latest version 2.0.0.74 if you want to try it again, since it was released in Feb 2014, well after Win8.1's release. It is available in SW Update under Win7 drivers for model NP900X3F-K02CA, in the Win8 folder inside the Easy Settings 2.0.0.74 package.

Yes, unfortunately your model isn't officially supported for Win8.1 by Samsung. It is the same with my NP700Z3A and many other models. So we rely on Microsoft to maintain backwards compatibility with Win8.

    hi guys,

Long time. Is it somehow possible to wake up the laptop when the lid is opened? Or the drivers are still the issue?

    Does anyone know?

    thanks

No issues for me with Settings 2.0.0.55. Had it working on three different S9 models (in W8.1).

Same here on Settings version 2.0.0.74.

As we discussed earlier (the post just before yours) all Settings versions 2.0.x seem to have Samsung Fast Start enabled (wake on lid open) whereas all versions 2.1.x and newer seem to have it disabled. In both cases is it hard coded and cannot be configured as it could in Easy Settings for Win7.

If you meant wake up from hibernation (actual power on) I don't think that is possible with any Settings version.
