I have a 700Z7C-S02UK. I got rid of Windows 8 and performed a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I then went into the Disk Manager and shrunk the main partition, leaving 240GB for Linux. I want to create a Windows 7/Ubuntu dual-boot.

The problem is, when I boot from a Ubuntu 12.10 CD, it doesn't show the Windows partition and doesn't offer to install Ubuntu along side Windows.

I have attached a screenshot from Disk Management showing the volumes on my HDD.

I am able to see all partitions on my Series 7 HDD from a Parted Magic LiveCD.

I wonder if the problem stems from the fact that Win8 models come from Samsung with the HDD being GPT partitioned (vs the old MBR partition table).

If you're willing to start over, you could create a new partition table with GParted. Just remember if you choose MBR, to disable UEFI in BIOS before installing Windows.

Update: And if you create your Windows partition right there in GParted (and flag it Bootable) Windows Setup should install boot files directly on it, without creating a 100MB System Reserved partition in front.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get it working. What I did in the end was plug the HDD into another laptop, installed Windows and then shrunk the Windows partition to make room for Linux, ripped out the HDD and plugged it back into my Samsung 700Z7C-S02UK. From there, I just re-installed all the appropriate drivers for Windows, and then did a clean install of Linux. A very long winded way to do it, but I'm now happily dual booting between Windows 7 and Linux :)
