Hi,
The hard drive in my Samsung X50 has crashed and needs replacement.
However, I am not sure how to open the cover of hard drive at the back of the notebook. There is a sign at the back saying HDD, with a arrow, indicating that it is the cover of the HDD, but the cover can't be moved, stuck at two points. See the attached picture.
Does anybody know how to open up the notebook?
Thanks for any help,
Zn

Dear John,
Thanks for the quick reply. Indeed I have seen that thread. If only I could open up the cover!
As far as I can work out, there are no screws under the two places I circled. Not sure whether it is some kind of plastic system that clicks into place. I have been relectant to use exessive force. I can slide a thin knife from the side either between the two circles or from the left or right, so I am convinced that the cover should be removed in some way. I also have a few other Samsung notebooks, X10, X10+, X65. They all have screws that can be easily removed to reveal the HDD.
I also opened up from the front, and removed the keyboard. There is another layer of metal board, with no sign of the HDD. I am convinced that the HDD should be accessed from the back.

Hi.
Samsung must have been going through an awkward stage when your x50 was made.
See if you can contact any of the original posters by PM. EDIT : I did not realise it`s dated 2005 , the only one left is John Ratsey.

That definitely looks like the cover for the HDD. Perhaps it is time to try the brute force approach and try sliding the cover towards the front edge. The other similar notebooks have two screws but maybe your cover just clips into place.

The two places that I circled are indeed screws. It becomes apparent when I use a knife to cut the center of the shape, and it was easy to unscrew.
I took out the broken 80GB disk and put in a 160GB new disk. I am re-installing the OS now.
I wasted many hours but there is no permanent damage, so it is happy ending.
Thanks,
