Hello everyone, I am new to this commnuity and wondered if anybody had any suggestions to why my laptop fan is not working. When I first bought it, it was working seemlessly. I first noticed it a month after I bought it. I think after I updated the BIOS and whole bunch of other driver updates thru SWupdate, the fan stopped working. also updated windows 8 to 8.1

    This is my laptop: Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Series 9 NP900X3E-A02US Intel Core i7 3537U (2.00GHz) 4GB Memory 128GB SSD 13.3" Ultrabook Windows 8 64-bit

Do you think I should format my computer using the PC settings? or if my BIOS is the problem, how can I downgrade it?

My version of the BIOs is P10ABK

I have no idea what to do?

    Thank you,
    Steve :hi2:

    Hello Steve, welcome to NBR.

The first thing I would suggest is to open the Settings Control Center (Fn-F1) and make sure Silent Mode is OFF.

Of course I don't know if that's the issue, but Samsung has their own approach to power management which tends to sneak up on many users.

The following posts explain how power settings are generally handled on Samsung laptops:

    Overview of Samsung Power settings

About Windows Power Profiles (Power Plans)

Silent Mode explained (Win7 but also applies to Win8)

How do you know your fan isn't working? Is there some kind of program you can run that can show and test its status? And is there only 1 fan in this machine or 2?

I'm a recent new owner of this same model and I posted a similar question in the X3E/X3F owner's thread earlier today. I'm not sure if my fan isn't working properly, but I have noticed how warm (to hot) the machine runs in general.

I've posted some debugging suggestions in that thread.

The X3E has two fans so the likelihood of both not working is low.
