I spent an hour searching for my question of installing Win 10 on my Samsung Series 5 Ultra NP540U3C but couldn't find anything on my specific laptop? I just installed more memory 12GB and a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA III SSD with Win 8 on it, but would like to put Win 10 on it. Should I upgrade to 8.1 first? I've heard horror stories on upgrading to Win 10 on these older Samsungs... so some feedback please.
Adding to the above... I still have the origional 500GB HD with Win 8 with all updates, so if I muck up the SSD doing Win 10 I can reformat the SSD and put back in the 500GB HD.
As my sig shows, I have a fully loaded Lenovo Y41P, but the MB is dead and it is going to be a long wait for a MB from China and that may not even fix it.
Moderator, if this needs to be move to proper place, please do so.

Another question: my laptop has a 24gb SSD, do I even need that since I have a 500GB SSD in there now? Is there a way to disable that as I think it would slow down my laptop?

I think the questions you are asking have been covered by discussions during the past few weeks. Start by looking at the end of this thread. You can go straight from Windows 8 to Windows 10.
There is no setting in the BIOS to disable the iSSD but if you don't install the ExpressCache software then the iSSD won't be used.

Well, that was easy!!!
Upgraded to Win 10 without any glitches and it took all of 20 minutes to do it. It probably helped that I upgraded the NP540U3C memory to 12GB & replaced the 5400 rpm HD with a 500GB SSD.
All I did was go to Microsoft site
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
and clicked on the "upgrade now" button and it did the rest. Been using it now for the past two hours and works perfectly. I'm guessing now that Win 10 has been out for awhile now, Microsoft worked out all the bugs.
The Samsung Series 5 Ultra NP540U3C was a bit of a weak laptop with only 4GB memory and 5400 rpm HD and Win 8. With the memory, SSD & Windows upgrades it is pretty darn fast.
Only weak link would be no dedicated GPU.Last edited: Feb 10, 2016 -
Basically, you do NOT want to install the ExpressCache software when your main drive is a "real" SSD. The onboard iSSD is not very fast, and caching would only slow things down -- not to mention adding unnecessary wear.
Without ExpressCache installed you can use the iSSD as any other drive, except it isn't bootable. But be careful not to wear it out: If it fails, it can cause a serious boot delay -- and it cannot be replaced independently nor disabled in BIOS.
While on that subject: For those who upgraded to Win10 and had problems making ExpressCache working, member @aquesi shared his solution in this post.
Previously, member @jhol had shared an alternative version of ExpressCaches in this post.
I have not tried either solution myself as my Sammy is still on Win8.1jack53 likes this. -
Before I did the windows upgrade to Windows 10, it showed up with the local disk.
I wonder if Windows 10 bypassed it as I didn't?Last edited: Feb 11, 2016 -
OK, thought it fit this post too, so I'll change it:
Now that I deleted the ExpressCache software program and effectively retired my iSSD...
