    Hi,
I want to upgrade the 160GB HD to 250 (or larger). The present one is a Hitachi Travelstar serial ATA 150. On Dabs the ATA 150 ones area lot dearer than the ATA 300. Does it matter.
I read somewhere the Samsung installation disks may not work. I want to do a clean install.

SATA 300 is backwards compatible with SATA 150 - the hardware should negotiate the fastest speed supported by both the HDD and the chipset.

For example, I've just put a Fujitsu MJA2250BH into a 3 1/2 year old Samsung X60 because the original HDD was dying.

    No problems.

On Dabs the exact same Hitachi 250gb HD are priced.

    SATA 150 is £63
    SATA 300 is £37

There's no reason not to get the 300 then. So why do they stil sell the SATA 150 version.

I can't explain what is going on there. If they are the same HDD then they both have the same interface.

The 5K320 is a previous generation. I would recommend getting one of the HDDs, such as this Fujitsu, which has 250GB on one platter. This is what I've just put in the Samsung X60 and the performance is very good, and it is economical on power (so it stays cool).
