Q: Is the 8870 version released in the US?
A: For the 17.3" version, YES.
For the 15.6" version, NO. No other information on potential release dates is available as of 21 April.
Thinking of getting from Canada? Then please consider the following
The New Samsung SERIES 7 Chronos - YouTube
There are at least 2 known variants - 15.6 and 17.3 inch
Seems to be Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7-3635QM + AMD Radeon HD8870M 2GB DDR5 which may be a Graphics Core Next (GCN) core rebrand of the previous 7870M as per Anandtech.
Features RAMaccelerator (may be linked to this http://www.anandtech.com/show/6518/samsung-acquires-ssd-caching-company-nvelo)
Full HD screen 1920 x 1080
JBL speakers
Looks like a new chassis design that is thinner.
More details to be updated, post what you know!

Would a 8870m be near the 7970m? If yes that is crazy to be put in an ultrabook instead of an 8 pounds sager/msi/alienware
-
Seems that it's the 7870M rebranded. Hopefully Enduro issues would not plague this model. Any guesses if it will be the NP700Z5D?
-
I want it. Decent gaming on an ultrabook form factor. I'll never be able to afford it however
.
-
Crap. Now I feel like my NP700Z5C is outdated.

Samsung unveils the Series 7 Ultra, refreshes the Series 7 Chronos with a slimmer design
More info
This looks really great. Although it's not haswell.
How are the JBL speakers on the current chromos? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
It looks as if Samsung is repeating what they did a year ago: Introduce the new model using the current Intel platform and then update the mainboard when the next Intel platform becomes available.
Note that there appears to be two models: The Chronos has a num-pad on the keyboard so is, I assume, has a 15.6" display while the Series 7 Ultra has a keyboard that doesn't have the num-pad. Does this mean it has the 15.0" display? Let us hope that the displays are PLS.
John -
have they finally ditched optical drives?
if they have then i may regret my £750 series 9 xc3 more than i anticipated.
a 13" ultrabook with the 384 GCN shader gpu would be nice! -
Seems like only the 13" will get the PLS/IPS screen
-
Series 7 Ultra is a 13-inch Ultrabook, while the Series 7 Chronos is a 15-inch and it packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU, a 300-nit, 1080p display, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, an optional touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, JBL speakers and 11 hours of battery life!!!
-
Sources indicate the new Samsung Series 7 Chronos is called NP770Z5E series.
It is already on sale in Europe and 17.3 inch variant is available.

If this available for 1000 in europe I won't hesitate to buy it. That probably won't happen though
.
Are there already similarly spec'd laptops announced? -
Perhaps CES will see more announced, but using old chassis.
-
I hope so... I really want something like the chronos but cheaper.

There's a nice table summarising the features here. It shows the model number of the 13.3" as NP-730U3E.
John -
That was just a link to this thread. Was that your intention?

An Italian site reports the dimensions of Chronos: 376 x 249.9 x 20.9 mm, and a weight of 2.35 Kg
There are 4 USB ports USB, 2 of these are USB 3.0, HDMI and VGA (why Samsung doesn't use a mini Displat port?)
Weight seems to be the info more contradictory, some site reports 3.16Kg

Ok it is impressive , it is so impressive that I am thinking of waiting till I know its price and when it will be released.
I know it could be silly for some but I hope they will not dump the optical drive from other models in the series 7 in 2013 . Sony Vaio T already got models with optical drive -

Oops.
Too much copy and paste of links. I've fixed that post and
here it is again.

Here's the official press release with specs

You (account name 'rokaldo') have just tried to access a document in another KeepandShare account 'onlylal'. To view it you need to ask the owner of the other account to set the Sharing controls to give your KeepandShare user name 'rokaldo' rights to view the document. -
OooOOoO....
I sure hope they release it in Jan 2013 and not wait until like Q3.... -
Check now.... -
Who says Q3?
-
It wouldn't be q3
Haswell's out by June. They wouldn't release a new high-end laptop with a prev-gen CPU! -
Usually stuff announced @ CES usually don't hit shelves fully until Q3. That has been the trend. If lucky Q2.
-
Again, that wouldn't make much sense. The stuff they announce that has haswell will come out late q2 early q3, but laptops like this are filler for the space between now and then.
-
They'll most likely do the same thing that they did with the 1st and 2nd gen Chronos, where it was first released with a Sandy Bridge CPU then re-released with an Ivy bridge CPU. I think someone mentioned this earlier. They'll release this one with the Ivy i7-3635qm and then re-release it in less than a year with some Haswell Processor. It'll take some time to make the new one because Haswell is not nearly as similar to Ivy as Ivy was to Sandy, so the motherboard will need to be completely reworked. Plus Intel has been stating further delays with Haswell production so who knows.
-
What do you think of the 8870M, cos I was interested by the Asus UX51 with the 650M but apparently that Chronos got a better CG, 16go ram and better price.. But never got good relationship with ATI, how is it nowadays ?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
The NP770Z5E and NP730U3E are already showing up on some European etailer sites so I would expect them to be available in the lucky countries within a month or two. Ivy Bridge and Haswell in due course. Like the NP700Z5A arrived a year ago and was superseded by the NP700Z5C.
John -
On paper it should be more powerful.
-
Apparently their Enduro technology similar to Nvidia's Optimus has become much better with auto-detecting when to use which GPU lately. I think on this new one it won't be a problem like it was on the original Chronos. I couldn't find anywhere on Asus' product page for the UX51 that specified whether the 650M used GDDR3 or GDDR5 for the 650M, but if it's the former it's probably slower than the current 640M in the Chronos. The 8870M will theoretically be slightly faster than the GTX660M however according to Notebookcheck.net. It's mostly a re-brand of the 7870M with some slightly re-worked clocks and power consumption as far as I'm concerned. It still won't make up for the performance hit if you plan on gaming at the native 1080p resolution.
I think 16GB of ram will be an option, not as the base spec. I read an article somewhere that said it'll still have 1 DIMM soldered to the board and your choice is between 4GB or 8GB for that DIMM, then of course there's the user-accessible slot for another possible 8GB.
Still waiting on a price! -
According to Anandtech, Enduro is not as reliable as Optimus and you will suffer from low utilisation.
-
I found this site: !!! LINK !!!
It seems that it's a satellite site ( Samsung Notebook Web Contents) , where all products have their page (and in this case, a sneak peek of what will see in official Samsung page for this notebook !!! :thumbsup
.
Inside also, we can read some new little information about this NB... -
Nice find!
-
According to Samsung's Swedish Facebook page it will be available in mid February.
-
According to the webpage of presentation linked they state 178 degree viewing angle without distortion matte screen. That means the 15 inch also get HD PLS screen ? If so it is interesting me into getting the new 17 incher for desktop like usage in complement to my ux32vd. Hopefully it will also come with touchscreen option.
-
Seems very promising. Two queries which I want people so speculate on;
1. Will the hard drives be user-accessible and be able to be swapped with SSDs?
2. How will temperatures run? The Macbooks and Asus UX51 have similar chassis with a weaker graphics card and get quite hot. -
Very good. So this wave of Series 7 is the second after NIKE the original.
-
Well I think the hdd will be possible (2.5") swap with an SSD, and put eventually the internal 1TB (for example) as external storage hdd...
But will be also an SSD version native I think.. And hope with their awesome 840 pro inside :-D
Edit: yes like the tag into my link, it's tagged as "nike2" ;-)

So they dumped optical drive? If so they killed potentialy the best multimedia monster out there.
-
I wonder what the percentage of people who use their optical drives is, I know I haven't ever used the one in my laptop that I've had for two years now. I'm glad to see it gone.
-
I'm asking to myself if Samsung is using the classic IPS FHD 15.6" by LG that is used in many others laptops like Sony Vaio S, Asus UX51VZ, Envy 15... also known as Orangegate display...
And yes, according to this press release there is touchscreen option:
http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/5401710/samsung-series-7-and-ultra-2013-pdf-180k?da=y -
I cant imagine a multimedia beast without a fast blu-ray drive.
-
Asus UX51 has not temperature problems, specially on GPU, but it seems an ASUS choice to slightly throttling CPU when both are used at 100%.
you can buy an external USB blu ray drive, Samsung has done a good choice.
The source of this slide is slightly not reliable because is the same AMD, but AMD8800m is more powerful respect to GT650m:
-
I can live without the optical drive and I personally don't mind having VGA, but at this point I'm guessing a lot of people would prefer miniDP instead of VGA...
-
I hate to sound stupid but what is that DVD-SM on the right side !? I know it is for DVD Super Multi but what is the need for it if you have USB !? Sorry if I seemed to be stupid
-
Any news on price? I wish it should be same like old ones
-
Dvd-sm it's the multi card reader slot, don't know what it means that sigle.
Price in eu on some sites says 1400-1500€... Hope for that price! (with ssd)

you are right, it is Multi-card reader , may be it is SD reader actually and the chart is just wrong !! Hope that they revise it again.
