My battery just jumped from .5% wear to 2.5% wear.
I've charged it twice.
It's a great laptop, but has way too many problems IMO. Definitley returning it. I would try swapping it for another but it seems as if the problems are widespread.

Well next week I'm going to the US so I guess I'll have to settle for the best buy version. I was waiting for the matte-screen version (with 8770 or 8870, I don't really care for that) but no luck so far, maybe next week it'll appear if I'm lucky
. Is there a way to have a laptop "on hold"? I just don't wanna get there and find the store without stock.
-
Google "bestbuy.com international credit card" they have a guide on using one -
$1699... Quite a bit considering the cost of the version currently being sold in the US. However... A lot less than the equivalent MBP, and the Lenovo Carbon Touch (who's current thread in this forum is full of screen door complaints). -

I read a couple of reviews of the 770Z5E already. I believe that all 770Z5E have that ghosting or image retention issue... Does anyone know if that could be fixed with a driver update?
-
@all looking for a 8870m-version. I don't think, it would help You when I would buy some for You due to taxes, right?

Guys, I am losing it. Where can I find the series 7 chronos 15.6 with 8870 in the US? I can't find it anywhere. How much is it?
-

Too bad reading about all the negative reviews in regards to chronos. some people however seem to not complain from any problems at all, not sure what to think of this product anymore and the fact it's just being delayed so much i'm losing interest myself (a little bit).
I purchased the Gigabyte U2442D recently for the wife, it just arrived and it's great! I love it, everything it just right, gaming performance v good including simcity and it's so thin and light, no heating problem (dedicated gpu and cpu cooling systems). Not as powerful as the 8870, but 730M is as good as 650M (which is on the retina macbook pro):
GIGABYTE - Notebook & Netbook - Notebook & Netbook - U series - U2442D
It's a good option for those who are "computer-less" . and it's only a $1000
For me personally i'm still waiting and determined for Chronos/ATIV Unless major issues are discovered, Once they release it proper, the big review sites will be able to give us a clear idea if it's good or bad. I continue to be computer-less (kind of with my old dell E series) -
I would get the Asus G55 if they dropped the optical drive to make it thinner like the 14 inch version, added a touchscreen, and made it out of something other than plastic.
In other news, it looks like Amazon US just added the newest Series 3 to their store. Hmm...
And even more good news, Samsung removed all the old Series 7s from their site!! There's only 3 listed now. The 17 inch 8870m, 15 inch 8770m, and 13 inch Ultra.
Baby steps, baby steps. -
-
At this point, I just wanna claw someone's eyes out over at Samsung!
-
Haha! I think this is the only piece of technology that Canada has brought in before the US!
-
good news!
-
Wow, Samsung just cleaned up seriously their US page for the series 7. There used to be almost a dozen versions, now there are only 3. We'll see if it means anything.
-
-
US release is IMMINENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
but seriously, I have enough throttling with the CPU, I don't need to worry about a throttling GPU and more heat as well. The 8770M is still a pretty beastly card which will get better with driver updates.
-
Got the NP780Z5E Series 7 - i5 which comes with 8GB of ram - just wondering what the RAM upgrade can be, am I right in thinking 4GB's is soldered on board with only an additional 4GB card able to be removed?
-
-
NP780Z5E-T01UK is the i5, 8850 model -
-
Do you lose dual channel if you run 4GB + 8GB memory for the 12GB? I'm dumb when it comes to memory I have to say
-
You get dual channel for the first 8GB basically (whole 4GB stick and half the 8GB stick), and the last 4GB (of the 8GB stick) are accessed in single channel. The motherboard/OS dictate this for you and it's transparent.
Bottom line is, it's still better to have the additional space even if it's slower. Memory speeds have the least effect on gaming performance compared to SSDs or CPU/GPU power though. -
Is this the correct RAM for the Chronos (debating buying the 8770 and upgrading):
SAMSUNG Server Memory Model M393B1K70DH0-CK008/Q8/E8 - Newegg.com
Although what are we expecting the U.S. price point to be for the 16GB/8870 model? Another reason I have been waiting is that I figured that for the price to upgrade the RAM of the 8gb/8770 model I might start approaching the point of the higher model.
Think it would be $1500 with possibly a sale bringing it to $1399 at first? (I noticed the Best Buy 8770 model currently appears for $1399, previously it was at $1199 and at the time said it was a sale of $100, so I don't know what's going on with jumping up $200) -
No, that is desktop/server RAM. You need any DDR3 SODIMM module, ideally 1600 MHz or better.
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Memory, Laptop Memory, 8GB, DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) -
How much of an improvement will there be swapping the 4GB ram for 8GB?
-
Going from 8GB to 12GB? Barely anything. If you use the ExpressCache thing it will probably be beneficial though, since ExpressCache basically makes a large RAM cache of data, leaving you with a little less room for programs.
8GB is a ton already though. I have trouble maxing out 8GB on my work machine... right now, I have several Visual Studio instances, dozens of Firefox tabs, a SQL Server Studio instance, six threads of World Community Grid, Outlook, Notepad++, a dozen PDFs, and several Excel sheets up all at once on this machine. All that is about 60% of my current memory. So 12GB is overkill. -
Bottom line: A channel can support multiple RAM slots, but a single slot cannot be divided over multiple channels. Within a channel, all RAM sticks must have the same frequency and timing, but can have differing sizes. RAM sticks that are in separate channels may have different frequencies, timings, AND sizes.
What does this mean for the Series 7 Chronos? The Core i7 inside it supports 2 channels of RAM. Unless Samsung is monumentally stupid, one channel is dedicated to the soldered on-board RAM, and the other is dedicated to the available RAM slot. Because of this, you should be able to put any DDR3 SODIMM stick in there, have it work, and get it's full performance.
I do agree though that even 8GB is more than 95% of people need. Most people don't even use 4GB. Unless you're working with HUGE image, video, or 3D model files, I wouldn't worry about it. -
Posting this from my new Chronos! Got it in Futureshop along with a 256GB Crucial drive that they knocked down to $189 after I pulled up an Amazon.ca sale for the same drive on my phone. It's fantastic so far, but the keyboard takes a little getting used to (my old Lenovo had different placements for Ctrl, Fn, L-shift, and Enter). Going from 12.1" 1280x800 to 15.6" 1920x1080 is a crazy difference.

Source? Nearly every Northbridge since the Merom days supports asymmetric and interleaved channel modes. For example, here is the 965 chipset:
http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/316273.pdf
Refer to page 12, section 1.1.2. It supports dual channel interleaved and dual channel asymmetric.
Since the i7 has its memory controller on its die, you can find details on its memory channel capabilities here:
2nd Generation Intel® Core™ Mobile Processor Datasheet, Vol 1
Refer to section 2.1.3.2, where it also mentions asymmetric memory configurations.
Dual channel (Interleaved) & Single channel (Asymmetric) explained! - Overclockers Australia Forums
You can have mismatched frequencies and timings--the faster stick will slow down to the slower stick's clocks. You can have mismatched sizes as demonstrated above.
Anyway, that is why I said "sort of." It's up to the motherboard and controller to implement it, and they will do the best they can to make two sticks work as fast as possible together. I hope this was not too simplified (I get how the half-of-a-large-stick can be misinterpreted), but I also hope I have defended my point. -

So far I don't see any ghosting. I do see how the backlight is kind of awful though, I wonder if it's possible to replace the lights with blue or something...
Also, the max screen brightness seems to fluctuate. Is it because I am installing things? -

Found it, thanks.

NP780Z5E - touchscreen, silver
NP870Z5E - matte, black
NP880Z5E - touchscreen, black
Here is the link showing Samsung registration.
Here is the screen-shoot.
I don't like the glossy screen of NP780Z5E which I might return back to BestBuy tomorrow. I am waiting for the release of matte screen NP870Z5E. -

I am waiting for matte screen NP870Z5E. View attachment 94937

Extremely so! It's a few pips below maximum because it hurts my eyes on full. I've created a power plan for maxing everything out though, in case I need to.

WOOOO 500 PAGES!!! Is this the most anticipated laptop of 2013!?
I'd figure the Series 7 Ultra or Series 9 would grab more people's attention. -
The Ultra and 9 are just another expensive ultrabook with a touch panel. The Chronos is in a league of its own.
-
Has anyone saved the pages of the Ativ Book 8 from the fishingtree site? I'd like to ogle over them over my free time
-
For those in Canada you can get the NP780Z5E-S02CA for a bit cheaper through pricematching. Go to futureshop and ask them to pricematch directdial, which as of today was selling for $1655+$22 shipping. The difference is $23 which they will beat by 10%, so $25 savings (total price of $1674.99 before tax and enviro fees)
-
sooo.... I'm very naiive about this and whatnot but, should we be expecting this in Q2? Also, how is the Ativbook 8 lining up to the 770Z5E? Should I bother waiting for Haswell? I'm in dire need of a powerful laptop for my upcoming 4 years of hell
-
The series 9 is Samsung's answer to the Mac air, where as the ultra is one of few ultrabooks with dedicated graphics. -
