Think I'm going to hang on just a little longer in case the NP780 becomes more widely available - and at a better price than Curry's - who must certainly just be inflating the price because of being the sole supplier at the moment.

But yes, the widespread distribution of these machines is pathetic. It seems you can buy most models of laptop fairly easily, but here in the U.K at least, even Samsung don't supply it via their own website.

In fact I phoned them up today and they suggested I buy it from Amazon in India. Amazing that the U.K arm of Samsung has to direct me to India to buy one of their latest models!

The 1TB HDD is SATA 2, but the laptop has a SATA 3 port. People who swapped the HDD for an SSD experienced full SATA 3 speeds :)

Are you unable to order it from anywhere else online, newegg has it, and bestbuy.com has it ( although im not sure if they ship to the uk ), but amazon does. What is the price for the Curry's version. I picked mine up at best buy, for $1,199.99 it's a high price.. but after i was able to play all the games i wanted i was pleased :)

He's referring to the high price of the 8870 model in the UK, a model that is not currently offered here in the states. Where did you find it on amazon and newegg?

You can buy from Samsung store for £1200 with 2 years warranty.

There was a price misunderstanding between Samsung and PC World and that was the reason why Samsung did not supply PC World until they fixed the price. Now Samsung sells £100 cheaper and they will supply PC World because nobody will buy from them anyway.

i am experimenting some ghosting in my NP770z5e screen, its just noticeable when you press Ctrl+Alt+Supr, is not a BIG PROBLEM to me, like a said, is just really noticeable when I go to task manager.

What do you recommend ??? just keep the notebook because the problem is not really annoying. Or its better to change it ?? the ghosting problem could increase with the time ???

    thanks

I've completely given up on Samsung now. Maybe I'll wait till their Haswell models and they better release in the USA.

I've seen various owners giving tips on how to open up the laptop.. all pretty much the same, but I was wondering whether we could get some clarification on the instructions...
So when you say 'front to back...' Does this mean that with the laptop turned over, the screen hinges are located the furthest away from you and you start prying from either side of the hinges and work your way slowly down each side, ending with prying the area of the laptop closest to your body?? And THEN pry open the area between the screen hinges?

    Thanks.

I would have bought it straight from Samsung, but they don't list the i7, 8870M model :) I have even just double checked.

I'll look further afield and see what I can find seeing as they carry an international warranty. Not holding my breath though :)

Can anyone tell me if the NP770Z5E, the 15 inch version with the 8870M, will ever be released in the US? Should I just suck it up and buy from Canada? I know this computer will be my next purchase but how likely is it to release in the US ever? Time horizon isn't as important as avoiding the international keyboard to me. However I would like to upgrade now if it won't be released at all in the US. Thanks!

I meant, when the laptop is upside down front would be furthest away from the hinge and closest to the touchpad.

They may not list it online but they sell it from the store. I've been there on Monday and Tuesday and they had plenty in stock. Look a few pages back where I posted pictures from the store.

See if you can get the laptop replaced (from Samsung or your retailer) - many people do not have this issue on theirs.

I was looking at the 15.6" touchscreen glossy version at Best Buy and it seems like the screen has a slight sparkle/grain, similar to my cheap Kyocera phone. Does anybody know if the 17.3" version is like that too? And is it also PLS? Is the non-touch version any better?

Ah apologies. I just assumed you meant the online store. Samsung, like many companies, seem to think that the U.K only exists of London, so we don't get a physical store up here in the north :)

maybe run a disk check, you may also want to see if there are any errors under the windows events. (Control Panel -> administrator tools -> event viewer)

Windows 8 makes it very easy to roll your machine back to factory but I would first try checking your hard drive/event viewer to see if something is running which is causing a hang

Upon further research, maybe one of these links will help you. When I bought my wife an hp I had freezing issues after installing a windows update, I am attaching a few troubleshooting url's

    Thanks for reply me !
In event manager, none of events hang or give error, there are only info (i) events that loads driver/etc... :(
I have disabled the "restore to previous point", if I have a boot error I prefer to reinstall all :p
Thanks for the link, I will check this evening if I can resolve in some way.... or I reinstall all
Uff.... Bad Samsung/Microsoft support for sure :-(

The quality check at Samsung is a disaster.

I ordered the 770Z5E-S01DE (8870, non glare full hd display) now the third time. The panel is not really build in centered, there are couple of bad scratches, the left speaker made some strange noise and image retention issue is still present.

Well, that's the last Samsung notebook i've ever ordered. I give up.

Could You get this computer with a PLS- or IPS-panel? In Sweden it is only sold with a TN-panel.

No I'm talking about the screen itself. You know how matte screens sometimes have a grain? It's like that, it looks like there's graininess BEHIND the glossy surface. I remember I got a Dell laptop in 2006 with a TN screen that had the same problem so I returned it.

It's too bad it has that one flaw because other than that it's an awesome screen--- the best I've seen in a laptop. It would be perfect for photo editing. I'm kind of surprised people are nit picking about minor bugs and such when this is basically the only Windows laptop with a good screen. Every other 8 bit color one either is dim (all those workstation laptops) or has orangegate (HP and Sony).

BTW why is there no information on these laptops on the Samsung US website? There is one 14" Chronos 7 listed, but no others. You search for "Chronos Series 7" and it just gives you every laptop they sell.

It looks like the tutorial is not there, I would look at my notes posted a few pages back. Quite a few people have posted how they opened their laptops successfully.

I did find a video for a similar samsung laptop.

This is the best video that I found, (This is NOT the same laptop, but it is a similar procedure and it is very similar. The one main difference is that there are little snap connectors all the way around your entire laptop, the only place that I did not unsnap was the hinge itself. I would not follow this video to a T, If you have never opened a laptop however it is good to see how one of these thin laptops are opened. I would not put as much pressure on the bottom as the video does as it is aluminum and our laptop is plastic.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0nx62nhLUI

I went back and grabbed how I described opening the laptop. I have paraphrased below.

Jason- on the 840 pro migration software do I need a USB to SATA cable or does one come in the box? Also will the migration software clone the recovery data on teh HD I have seen some indicaiton that it is not able to accurately clone that data?

I have used the migration software that comes with the samsung disk 4 times with no issues (once on someone else's chronos.). It clones data and resizes partitions great. Just make sure you get the latest version. If you install off the disk you get the version may be very old, it should prompt you to update to at least version 2.xx. You do need a usb to sata cable or external hard drive bay. It does not come with one.

    Something like these would work.

It has nothing to do with DPI because I tested this at 100% and 125% and even tested diff intel hd 4000 drivers when I had the glossy touchscreen version of it. The damn screen is grainy like grease was smeared all over it. The screen was a CMO Chi Mei and you would think a glossy screen would be clear like glass and vibrant but it has the same grainy/greasy screen like some of the matte screens and I don't know why it exist on this glossy screen.

    What? must be typo

This has been discussed at length on this and other Chronos forums on Notebookreview, though admittedly there are now a LOT of pages to read through on all these.

This is neither TN or PLS - it is MVA, which is a variant of IPS/PLS and fairly similar. It's a slightly different technology to most of those currently available (google it, there's loads of info available), and could explain some of the reasons people are complaining about "graininess" or "image persistence" - I think it's part of the technology, basically, a trade-off of high viewing angles and battery life vs perceived visual clarity.

I personally don't have image persistence (but I don't need the brightness above 80%) and the slight graininess on mine resembles that of any touchscreen I've ever used, like the iPad, so I don't know if it's the screen or the touch layer, but it really doesn't bother me, it is just a mild "texture" on the screen, which I actually quite like and only notice on blocks of light colours like white.

I tried Googling and found nothing about the 17.3", only 15.6", and I can't read 170 pages. One guy on page 169ish said the ones in his country are TN. Do we know for a fact that the 17.3 is a MVA?

I'm very anti apple. Even thou I use an iPhone. I'd always prefer windows just because of availability of programs I use for my day to day business, but at this rate as I desperately need a new system I think I'm just gona settle for a Macbook Pro Retina since Samsung is incapable of making a product and releasing it without confusing the hell out off its customers.

I really want this laptop. I've been anticipating it since it was announced earlier this year, but it just seems like Samsung is sitting on their behinds when it comes to manufacturing and informing their customers on when their products become available. Can Asus, Sony or someone else please make a good looking laptop with similar specs before I throw stupid at apple.

A word to the german owners of the 15.6 touch screen systems. Is the keyboard layout in german? Can I a non german-speaking person buy them without having to look for where Z is?

    Thanks

Interesting to note, for those of you thinking that a Haswell version of this will hit in June (and it still could) , but Toshiba's high end Kirabook, coming out mid to late May will be available with Ivy Bridge i5 and i7 processors only. You would think they would wait a few weeks if they were able to go for Haswell. Makes me think that Haswell based machines are probably, in reality, not going to be available for quite a while yet - and I suspect the Chronos will be similar.

It actually depends on which SSD you get. They usually sell a "bare drive" model as well as a "kit" model. The "kit" model includes desktop mounting brackets and a SATA to USB2 cable that you can use. Of course transferring your data over USB2 would take many, many hours. For Samsung SSDs, if the model number ends in BW then it is a bare drive, whereas a model number that ends in KW is a kit drive.

I ended up getting a KW because that was all my local retailer had in stock, but I ended up connecting the old HDD and the new SSD up to my desktop PC to use TrueImage to clone the drive. It was much faster going from SATA3 to SATA3 than it would be going SATA3 to USB2.

Thanks goibhniu, the conversation I was posting on spans a few pages, I was specifically talking about the Samsung 840 pro SSD and nothing else. The software comes packaged with it.

Sorry, you weren't very specific, most of the conversations on here are about the 15" model now, which is MVA. I think the 17" is a TN panel, but I'm remembering back several hundred pages to when this was discussed, perhaps someone else can confirm?

No chance, they all have the regular German qwertz keyboard with additional keys for the umlauts.

Intellimemory - what is the verdict?

I saw early posters with 8GB machines saying it should be switched off. However, someone with a 16GB Canadian model said is actually came into its own with the additional RAM.

My question is, regardless of RAM, is there any point keeping it with a fast SSD upgrade?
