I get 5.2 but the Windows Index score only ever checks the Intel 4000 driver and never my 8850m

no ethernet port, no fhd display, no touchscreen, relatively smaller battery, and above all only 128gb for a whopping $1800....i see no way how this beats the 8870 chronos despite being a bit smaller and lighter......

I don't know seeing as they haven't released the 8870 in the US, it tells me Samsung doesn't want my money and I should look elsewhere for a laptop. The 765M > 8870, plus you don't have to deal with AMD and their spotty driver situation on laptops. The 17" pro does have the ethernet port as well which is more like the model I'm interested in.

A 780 in a 0,6 inch laptop? They better make it with titanium, otherwise that thing is gonna melt :D

The 780m is like 2.5 times stronger than the 8870m, pretty far behind

what do you mean? If you mean the 770z7e, I got one at a store in the US.
8870. I put Windows 7 on it. Everything works great except I get flickering in some games.......
So I'm really considering getting rid of it lol.

I should have specified I want the 8870 in the 15" which isn't available in the US (because of the non TN screen).

Hello there, I've read through many of the pages and I couldn't help but notice something. I went to Best Buy (U.S.) today (Technically the 31st but whatever) and I saw two different Series 7 Chronos's there: The one from Samsung's site with the 8770 and then they also had a model that came with a GTX 650M. I was surprised to see it because I hadn't heard about a model with the nvidia card and it was even $10 less. I'm going off to college in the fall and I'm looking to get the ATIV 8 if it has Haswell and I don't really need a laptop until late August, so I'm just going to sit back and see what unfolds. Even if it doesn't Haswell, I still may buy the current Chronos version with the nvidia card and put a SSD in it, but I doubt that Samsung would release a product with 3rd gen processors when everyone else is putting out ones with 4th gen's. IMO, the delay in release for the U.S. is probably due to the timing in relation to the release of Haswell, and the late (partial) release of the Chronos with the 8870 was most likely to satiate customers whom couldn't wait a month or two more or could care less about the new processors. As a previous person commented before me (too lazy to find the comment, sorry), Samsung is too big of a company with too much development potential to not put out a laptop with the latest tech.

Edit: Wait, it might have been the 17" one. Sorry, but I could have sworn it was the 15"

That's the previous generation of the Series 7. You might have noticed that it's thicker as it has an optical drive, but I'm surprised it's only $10 cheaper. In the UK, the previous gen models are being sold at big discounts. In my opinion, it's not worth getting the previous Series 7. It's a good multimedia laptop, but the newer model is in a class of its own.

Hi, I wanted to buy a 780z5e from FutureShop but I don't understand why I can't even create an account, when they ask me for the postal code in the registration process seems that the Florida postal code (where I live) doesn't work.. Could you help me? :(

@NJCSPQR: As others have pointed out, the model with GTX 650M that you saw, must have been the 2012 model NP700Z5C. It is still Ivy Bridge (like the current 2013 models) but has 1600x900 LCD of lesser quality than the new ones. On the plus side, that optical drive allows you to install an SSD and simply move the HDD to the Optical Bay, so you keep both.

I will add that it was one of last year's most popular models. And despite some concerns about mediocre contrast and viewing angles, many people like its matte screen with high brightness, which is viewable even outside in the sun. Depending on your need (for speed) a heavily discounted NP700Z5C is not a bad computer to own. Of course $10 discount is a joke. And still, definitely wait a few weeks if you can.

Thanks for sharing. I actually find the 14" P34G more interesting. :)

    14" 1080p screen, GTX 760M 2GB GDDR5, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 16GB max RAM, and under 4 lbs? Just sounds too good to be true. :)

^ only thing holding me back from Gigabyte is their spotty quality control record.

i can't help but be amused that a samsung thread has turned into an "oooh this looks interesting" thread because of the dearth of information :p

Previous generation Gigabyte P2542G was one of the few notebooks with Nvidia Gpu without throttling, now that model has been updated with GTX770m, and it's called P25W:
    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4634#sp

P35K is a new project, completely different from P25W (ex P2542G)

If you say that P2542G runs hot then what can you say about retina Macbook that hits 104°C throttling at 1.2Ghz running only prime95, instead P2542G keep turbo active on both Cpu and Gpu running prime95 + furmark.

I'm honestly ok with this, simply because if someone brings my attention to a laptop that's at least as good as the Chronos/Ativ then that's just better for me (us),

Personally, I'm hoping for more info soon about the Asus N550JV which I haven't seen much about since this Italian article was written. It looks really promising though.

With each and every manufacturer (dell, hp, asus, sony, acer, msi, gigabyte, razer) coming out with a haswell based laptop in under a month, now i have no doubt that samsung will also update ativ book lineup with haswell and i expect this announcement to be made on 20th june at their exclusive event. Also expect apple to refresh the macbook lineup at wwdc this week.

as far as the n550jv is concerned, i read somewhere that it has ~65w battery which is very less compared to chronos. otherwise it seems to be a decent contender to samsung

Yes definitely. 13.5 beta 3 is a huge performance and stability increase. In Bf3 for example I went from 32 avg to 40-45 avg in multiplayer on the same settings. I do have a feeling that 13.6 beta does not perform as well as 13.5 beta 3 though.

This is probably the first teaser picture of the new and refreshed ATIV line with Intel 4rth Generation Processors.
I see two laptops and the huge "monitor" is most likely a new ATIV One (All-in-One PC) and its looks great!

Moving forward, I am glad that the BLACK color is still present and al over across the ATIV line, I really like it!
Now it looks like this is a very serious event, and is exactly what most of the people here were waiting for. I doubt that Samsung will make such a big deal and heavily advertise the press-event, just to tell us, that, here is the ATIV Book 4,5,6,7,8,9 etc. with HASWELL and that's it.
Haswell alone requires a new internals so I expect some major changes and announcements.

Even thought a current ATIV Book 8 with Haswell will be more than enough for most people, I am also hoping to see the following for the new ATIV Book 8:

-Different display from the current Chronos 7/ATIV Book 8 without the reported grain/shadow issues
-Higher than 1080p resolutions touch panels, 2XXX x 14XX or 2XXX x 16XX would be fantastic and will match other manufactures laptops with that resolution that they have just been announced
-16GB RAM and SSD configuration out of the box
-AMD 8870 is a powerhouse but the NVIDIA has by far better software and driver support AND newer GPU line, so anything from the new high-end GeForce 7 series: 760M, 765M, 770M, 780M are more than welcome from me and I will prefer it over any AMD solution
-Thunderbolt (2) will be a great addition and Gigabit Ethernet
-WiFi AC, again not that important just yet, but the standard will become extremely popular the following years and its good to have it in your specs, especially now that many other manufacturers are releasing laptops with WiFi AC
-4 speakers and a real laptop subwoofer will also be a great improvement
-Same or less thickness and less weight will also be very welcome
-Last and less important for me is the Fingerprint Scanner addition, is something that I am personally used to from my previous laptops, so it will be a great addition as well

I really hope to see some of the above in the new ATIV Book 8 but again we need imminent availability or a clean and straight forward release date, just announcing the new line is not enough.
I expect the US market to be one of the first to get the new products, since the current line never arrived here, so there is no stock to clear out and such, PLUS Samsung is without a high end laptop in the 15.6 category in USA for months now. Even more all other PC manufactures that announced Haswell products have also announce imminent availability or release dates for this or early next month :)

I'm afraid the new ATIV line will get Nvidia graphics, so no more cool and quiet operation. However the current series might will receive a lower price tag, so I can also join to the team...

if Nvidia chips can mean similar performance to the 8870, and makes the whole driver process smoother (AMD drivers not compatible with switchable graphics, etc... jump through hoops to get it installed....), then i am totally fine with it. I just want some concrete info SOON

The 7xx Series Nvidia laptops certainly will make similar performance, just with bigger power adapter and more heat, noise. I hate when a laptop is noisy, especially a premium, better struggling with drivers...

The thing is, since AMD officially supports 8xxxm drivers work perfectly. Download and install. Only some games like ac3 need to be fixed, but other than that, driver support has been very good imo.

    hey guys,

Well on my Ativ book 8 (plz see the other thread for more explanations), either 13.5 beta 3 and 13.6 had issues with the win 8 apps, like patches of black or white covering part of the screen, stuff appearing and disappearing....I totally uninstalled all amd related stuff, rebooted, runned ccleaner registry, rebooted again before installing and the issues would remain - either in optimize performance on battery saving...so at least over here, things didn't go so smooth.

The only thing that fixed it, was the the little software developed by a user in this forum (err, forgot the thread's link), machater I think. After installing his patch, all apps runned well as they did with stock drivers ;)) so thanks dude!
unfortunately I am at the momemt laptoless, so unable to dig deeper on any questions you may have (Again, plz check the owners thread)

lool :) look I said a current ATIV Book 8 with just Haswell will be more than enough.
The rest of the stuff I mention believe it or not are appearing in many laptops nowadays and since the ATIV Book 8 is a high end line you expect to get the best for your money.

Lets hope for the best, June 20th is just two weeks away..

I just upgraded my 8770M card to 13.6 beta. How come it is underperforming now? On games I used to get 100+ FPS, I am now getting around 80.

Yeah, but never all in the same laptop, unfortunately :( However, I decided to wait 20th June too.. I don't believe that they will be able to ship haswell versions in a few weeks, but it's worth waiting 2 weeks (especially after 1 year of waiting ). I expect at least an indicative release date, then I'll decide whether I can wait Haswell or if I have to go for the Ivy Bridge: I need to buy it in July AT MAX.

I experienced the same. 13.5 beta 3 is the very best for performance. Maybe the newer 13.6 beta2 are good too.
