Rumoured ATIV Book 9 Lite, ATIV Book 9 Plus and ATIV Book Q leaked - Pocket-lint
dont expect ativ book 8 haswell refresh now, seems like only 13.3inchers are to be announced. samsung is just crazy n stupid only interested in selling more n more galaxies
EDIT: yeah, confirmed, no ativ book 8 with haswell announced ;(
-
-
The event barely started 20 minutes ago, lets give them some time before jumping to conclusions...
-
no love for the ATIV 8. Unless they have reps that can elaborate on any concrete info, or a non-announced update, i am officially jumping ship on this laptop, wiping it off my radar for good i guess
-
They already announced all the devices to be showcased at the beginning only in 2-3 minutes with more details shown later. Anyways, its over now and so will be samsung's notebook division in a couple of years.
-
Samsung whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
-
They didn't show or even mention the ativ 8.
-
The gigabyte p34g is looking better and better right now
-
Samsung is a joke. 6 months on and not only cannot I not buy a Chronos 7 or Ativ Book 8 or whatever they want to call it but I still don't know when it will, if ever, be released. Jumping ship right now
-
What a joke, that was absolute nonsense I had high hopes for the ativ 8. not even a mention. nothing. Can't find the gigabyte p34g anywhere either
Razer blade it is! -
well, hold on here. they did call it a 'premiere' event, and from the looks of it they only showed brand spanking new products.
we've known about the ativ 8 for a while, but only conjectured what the laptop might be. that could possibly explain why they didn't bother talking about the ativ 6 or ativ 8. this was not meant to be a 'catch all' presentation.
given the ativ 9 plus (i'm going to ignore the lite ever exists) is the series 9 rebranded and refreshed (DUH!), there is still a gaping hole between the ativ 6 and the ativ 9, that represents the 'workhorse' of the fleet. so i wouldn't call the ativ 8 dead just yet...it's just that samsung obviously didn't care to spend any extra time on old products at their presentation. -
the samsung facebook page kept teasing the event using photos of products including the ATIV Book 8. i feel completely ignored. if they ignore their product this much, imagine what their video driver support will be like?
-
Looks like I will buy the current ativ book 8 as soon as the price drops a couple of bucks.
How is the battery life? For example, how long will it last if I browse the net on medium brightness and maybe play a game for 1h? Is it over 8h or less?
Also, is it full aluminium or does it have a plastic bottom?
Thanks. -
All's I've ever wanted to do was buy this laptop with current specs but still not avialable in UK 6 months on.........any one knoe when or where we can buy this?
-
what other products did they tease for the event? i honestly didn't look at facebook because i could care less about facebook, but i would hedge a bet the ATIV 8 wasn't the ONLY ATIV notebook being used to advertise the event.
after all, it's named 'galaxy / ativ premiere event'. however, they couldn't exactly show the 9 plus or the ativ Q BEFORE the big reveal, could they? they had to show SOMETHING, ergo...enter stock photos!
it may seem like a slight, but you have to consider the business impacts of the presentation. i thought it was rather tidy, if a bit rushed in the beginning to slam through a million products.
haswell just BARELY got out the door. yes, other manufacturers are all bleating their latest products to use haswell, but samsung is notoriously slow to refresh and provide information on their notebooks. it's just not their core product.
i don't care what everybody does, it's their own decision to make. however, i'm still not in a rush to grab a notebook, so i'm okay with waiting until as late as mid-July to see what new information is available.
note - i'm not a samsung purist by any stretch of the imagination. i owned more asus products than samsung, and i really like gigabyte's offerings except my interest is tempered by their poor QC. i'm just stating it from as neutral a viewpoint as possible, and providing what i think is a possible explanation for why the showed what they did, and why other products were omitted. -
The bottom lid is made of plastic, but it looks exactly like the rest of the chassis and doesn't, I repeat DOESN'T, feel cheap at all.
Battery life is good, if the game you plan to play for an hour is not too demanding, I reckon you could get to 6ish hours -
They're obviously saving the best for last. Patience.
-
Did I miss something? Are they going to be introducing something else?
-
Patience young Grasshopper...
-
patience? this was announced in february!
im looking at the aspire v7 in my future -
I think this year Samsung has failed miserably in the notebook market, especially in the US. You think they would offer the worlds biggest economy the top of the line Series 7 Chronos model. Yet as a lot of us waited for 16 GB of RAM and the better 8870M GPU, it never happened. Now we are clearly better off waiting for a Haswell model. Samsung probably had limited production capability or they would have offered the US the higher end model. It seems like a big opportunity wasted for them. Many of us that waited now will consider other brands. They had an opportunity to create a loyal following with a seemingly great product but failed on the execution.
-
Tough crowd.
-
K. This is the last straw. Samsung better blow us all away with this computer updated with Haswell and amazing prices and by amazing I mean ....
- Nvidia 2gb graphics so we don't have to deal with driver or compatibility issues
- Haswell
- Comes with an SSD
- Under $1300
- No screen issue
- amazing battery life
-
Under $1300 with a ssd won't happen.
I also doubt it'll come with a ssd, as it's a media notebook with no DVD drive, people will want lots of storage. 7200rpm hybrid drive on the other hand... -
I guess I could live without an SSD.
-
You could install one after
And it is possible it comes with a big ssd, just not under $1300
I'm hoping they release a retina version of it(after all the series 9 they released today is only 13", no?)
It could very easily be a mbpr competitor. -
I probably would install one considering I would like the speed and since I'm a photographer I keep most of my data on an external drive. I think with the right support and hopefully a release, this product will be streamlined as top of the line.
-
I really don't understand why people still want that SSD configuration..you pay it TWICE its real value, and they will NEVER mount a Samsung 840 (basic nor Pro). You would end with a crappy, "slow" (well, relatively to other models), unreliable and well overpriced LiteOn SSD, and maybe with too little capacity. With HDD, people who doesn't need SSD speed are happy for the lower price, and people who need it can buy an aftermarket SSD, a more performant and reliable one, choosing the size they need and still spending less money.. Just spending half an hour to mount it once forever!

This^ I have no idea why anyone would want it to come with an SSD.

And, I don't understand how it's possible that they aren't selling it worldwide yet... The notebook was presented in late January: I'd think that 5 months are enough to optimize the production process, but maybe I'm just naive

this....
and the fact that during the delay, a significantly improved haswell chip has not only come to fruition, but has been implemented and released in other high end laptops BEFORE the laptop that was announced and demoed in January (with a different name) -
Or what? I don't think that the frustration that we're no doubt all feeling right now is going to affect a multibillion dollar international company.
Saying things like "Samsung better give in to my demands, or the consequences will never be the same!!" just isn't realistic. -
All I was saying is that we all deserve to see something pretty good for them making us wait so long. I'm sure they've already lost hundreds of customers in the US because of their lag.
-
Easy now. Both of you. Everybody is disappointed that we didn't get what we wanted (yet), but we can still have a civilized discussion about it.

I'm sure that the notebook will be worth the wait, as long as we remain realistic with our expectations. I think patience is best here.
Edit: Out of curioisity, what other options do we have if for some reason Samsung doesn't come through for us? I can't think of a single laptop, current or announced for the future, that combines the form factor, performance, and battery life the way the ativ does. I'm wondering if we have no choice but to wait. -
I've been looking around and the next closest thing I've found is the Zenbook line. Only thing is the prices are outrageous
-
(So far), there does not seem to be a laptop with the "perfect mix" - like the ativ8 has.
This may change soon, as other manufacturers slowly surprise us with refreshed models in the coming weeks/months.
It sure makes one wonder what on earth is going on at Samsung these days - the longer they delay, the more potential business they will lose to their competitors.
And so we wait some more.... -
Well those 765m powered machines d come close in terms of power to compactness but they are far behind in sylishness and screen quality.
-
Anyone else notice that Samsung now does have an Ativ book 8 on their US site?
The model is NP880Z5E-X01UB, and in the image at the top of the page, it claims to have an 8870, but farther down in the key spec section it says 8770.
Sadly I suspect that the lesser claim is in fact correct and it is legitimately nothing more than a Chronos 7 in a different box.
-
I'm sure it'll be changed and fixed... hopefully with Haswell
-
Maybe the reason why they didn't announced new 15" ATIV 8 and 9 laptops yet is because they need to sell out current stocks.
-
This may have already been pointed out, but here's a link to the 8870 Ativ Book 8 page that just popped up on Samsung's Canadian website: ATIV Book 8 - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG
-
any idea why not a single notebook except ativ book 7/8 comes with radeon 8xxx ?? I suspect the release of these amd gpus might be the reason for such a horrible and delayed release for this laptop. even at computex all the laptops announced came with nvidia 7xx series gpus. .
-
the ativ 6 comes with radeon 8770
-
I meant why no other manufacturer is using 8xxx gpu except samsung
-
Dell Inspiron 15R comes with AMD 8730m
-
Hmmm, interesting.
- No Haswell - still with 3rd gen i7
- Only 8GB of RAM - (vs 16GB on the other series 7 chronos @ futureshop) -
But it's 8gb internal and a empty dimm, assuming it's actually 16gigs, as I once asked Samsung for official specs for the 780z5e-s02ca And they said it was 8gb ram
-
I think our best bet for everyone here... is to wait till mid-july to august to see what OEM's come out with since Haswell is barely through the door.

There are often what appear to be strange component sourcing decisions which are expected to be beneficial to both parties. Perhaps Samsung didn't feel it was getting good enough pricing from Nvidia or AMD offered a good deal on its CPUs or Samsung just thought the new AMD GPUs would be better. Furthermore, it's not in anyone's interest for AMD to go bust.
If there's an empty slot then put some RAM in it (4GB is enough) so that the memory accesss runs as dual channel.
Also, historical evidence suggests that yields of any new chip fabrication process are initially biased towards the lower end of usable parts. I'm sure this has affected the 8870M availability and most likely means that the faster Haswell chips may be in constraint for some months. For those who don't need Haswell's better power efficiency, a product with a fast Ivy Bridge CPU and a good price may be more attractive.

Completely agree. My boss gave me £1,000 (ex vat) to spend on a new laptop. The NP770Z5E from John Lewis plus a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb still leaves me with £30 to spend
Might get a 64gb USB key to transfer the partitions across.
I don't think there's anything better for the money at the moment and when the haswell units do launch they'll be far more expensive.
Grab them while they're cheap!
