Having played diablo 3 ,sc2 and some xcom it feels pretty close to the 650m I had in my retina MacBook Pro under bootcamp.

I get these weird hitches while playing but pretty sure it's when it's trying to access the hd , it really is painfully slow.

It's much cooler than the retina MacBook Pro I had though.

Anyone else getting failures copying the disk image using the included recovery? I get to about 97% and it fails. Acronis Disk Image won't work because of UEFI..man I really hate Windows 8 and UEFI.

What?? Acronis True Image doesn't work with UEFI?? Damn, I can't live without that. Is it possible to use BIOS instead of UEFI? Why do you say you hate Windows 8? Do you think it has a part in that failure? Or is it not compatible with Acronis too?

I hate Windows 8 for several reasons but one is that MS is now adding an encrypted key in the bios itself so there is no restore dvd or even serial given with the laptop. This just adds an additional layer of b s to deal with. Anyway, UEFI/secure boot can be disabled if you press F2 during boot and disable it in the bios. At that point Acronis should work, I'm about to try it if I don't fall asleep first.

I never experienced it first-hand, but I read that despite swapping the drive, Windows 8 would recognize its license through said encrypted key? I.e., download the ISO, install fresh, no need to supply a key, yet the license is there.

Try to see if this suggestion can help you. (Don't guarantee, I just did a quick google)
System Imaging on UEFI based Windows 7 machine
If the key is stored in the BIOS, isn't it enough to install a fresh Windows 8 ISO? It should find the key automatically and activate itself, shouldn't it?

as on Asus n56, Acronis doesn't backup a partition (MSR, Microsoft Reserved Partition, Microsoft Reserved Partition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia); maybe this is the same problem here...
Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free and Macrium Reflect Free Edition 5.1.5444 backup it, so test with them and report if ok.

Anyone tested the 8870 1gb with games ?... Someone do hard stress and see if throttling appears ? :radar:

Yes it does find the key but I'm having other problems tonight (enclosure decided to crap out) so gonna have to buy a new one tomorrow and try again. But anyway, UEFI would be great if I could easily download the proper Win 8 version. I had the iso for win 8 pro that it wouldn't accept so now I'm going to try to clone the original drive again using Acronis + legacy bios.

BTW, for all trying to use Acronis, iirc their livecd/usb is linux based. I think it'd be safest to boot it in legacy bios mode, we still don't know if this lappy isn't affected by unfamous Samsung UEFI firmware bug.

Thank you. What worries me is when you go to more details (voir plus de détails) the french 15inch is said to have an hd panel. Ordinateur portable : Samsung Série 7 Chronos NP770Z5E-S01FR Ordinateur portable 15, 6" (39, 6 cm) Intel Core i7 3635QM 1 To 8192 Mo AMD Radeon 8870M Windows 8: Amazon.fr: Informatique

I first thought this has to be a typo or wrong information, but the 17inch version is said to have a full hd screen.

Is there a safe way to use the traditional legacy BIOS instead if that crappy UEFI until they fix it? And if positive, will it be possible then to run Acronis from a Usb stick to backup/restore a Windows 8 image?

Hello, im new here...ive read almost all the post from the thread , a guy said in his impression that 1 TBdrive is slow, why is that?(i expect better form a high end laptop or is it slow compared to the pricey ssd?)
you said the panel is not isp, someone said that it was a VA – MVA and PVA panel , which i read here
TN Vs. IPS Vs. VA | TN Panel.com
is very good, am i correct?

Don't post here often, mostly lurk, but my purchasing cycle is coming back up, so I'm getting more involved.

Basically the 1TB disk speed is only 5400 RPMs. While this is an adequate speed for a storage drive (like you'd find in Network Attached Storage or in addition to an SSD), it is not really fast enough for memory intensive tasks to run smoothly. A LOT of modern games rely heavily on memory for loading content during game-play. I noticed this significantly when upgrading my 7200 RPM drive to SSD a year ago, and the 7200 is definitely faster than a 5400. It is also significant for anyone looking to use this machine for graphic design, as faster read/write speeds will reduce the amount of time spent waiting when dealing with many-layered content.

It would have been great if Samsung had included a 64GB SSD front-end cache to the drive, as that would have relieved a lot of the headache. A 5400 1TB as the main drive just seems kind of lazy in my opinion, and I'm sure many people will swap it out. By the way, have there been any internal shots of the device yet? How easy is it to remove?

    @owners:
Can you say what kind of screws are used for the bottom?
If you are not able to describe them you could post some pictures.

If you have intention to swap the HDD with SSD, I suggest to open the notebook before to buy the SSD, just to check if the swap is possible, in this case will be very appreciated if you take some pictures, specially of cooling system and RAM.

    About Stress test:
5 o 10 minutes with Prime95 + Furmark have not broke any laptop, but if you don't want to try this test, you can run Crysis 2 with HWinfo64 in logging mode to generate a log file (CVS files) just to compare with the results of Asus U500/UX51.
CVS file should be posted into the forum.
In the absence of Crysis 2 even 3dmark11 with HWinfo64 in logging mode might be useful, but you should always post the CVS files.
Could be very useful even if the ambient temp is reported.

It's strange that 3Dmark11 reports CPU with a TDP of 35W instead of 45W, is it a error or is it correct?

Is the graphics switching (between integrated and the AMD card) automatic and seamless or do we have to do it manually?

Graphics switching on AMD's Enduro is not nearly as seamless as Nvidia's Optimus, however I've heard it's getting better.

Nope that's the old version (with black screen while switching and it was not yet called Enduro).
Enduro switching is seamless like Optimus, but you must choose manually between AMD GPU or Intel GPU for each software.

You're right -- I wouldn't believe you. I have the older setup right now on my old lappy, and 1 time out of 3, the whole computer blue-screens whenever the switch happens. I had to disable the automatic switch when the power plug is removed in order to stop the computer from BSoDing twice a day.

EDIT: Forgive me, I thought you were talking about the old "switch manually and have the screen flicker" method. I can't read, apparently.

Honestly. I don't care as long as it's easily removable. I just want a 1080 beautiful screen, powerful GPU, 16GB RAM and an i7. All of that, in this form factor, with even just 5+ hours of battery life, and I'm sold.

So much to my excitement, it looks like the Series 7 Chronos is indeed hitting stores today! Only one problem...why is it the model with only the 8770m instead of the beautiful, glorious, all-powerful 8870m?

Please, for the love of all things holy, please tell me that that model with that GPU is still coming to stores in the US....

Because if so, (which i'm assuming it guaranteed is, I'm just being a little worried), I will purchase it immediately.

Great news! It should be in the US very soon then...

Another question...does anyone know if the bottom plate is easily removed so I can swap the HDD for an SSD? I plan on doing this before even turning it on for the first time. Gonna purchase a slammin' fast Samsung SSD off Amazon, get the laptop, unbox it, open bottom plate, swap HDD for SSD, and then reinstall Win 8 with my install disc and external DVD drive.
