At 900 core clock can reach 1100 just by the normal turbo boost IIRC. Not a big OC.

First only the rMBP clocks theirs at 900 core clock which is an overclock from the base 650M spec, and 1100 is a rather large overclock and something that I'd say a good portion of the 650M (or 660M) can't do reliably or be very stable at.

Looking at the memory speed, it is running on GT 650M GDDR5.
If I'm not mistaken, the GT 650M GDDR5 on the lenovo is running on 790MHz core clock, 835MHz boost clock, 2000MHz GDDR5.
So, like others said, it is heavily overclocked(Core 835MHz vs 1155MHz, Memory 2000MHz vs 2555MHz).

alright, quick update.. just installed the samsung 840 250gb and this thing runs quick.. it boots in about 5-7 seconds

clean windows 7 pro installation took 6-7 minutes from start to boot up

i originally copied the samsung sw update program to a flash drive to update the drivers, and i just found out i have no internet connection

the regular windows drivers do not work with LAN/WiFi and thus the SW update can't update without any connection.. zzzZzz

anyone know any solutions? is there a basic driver hanging around that i can get ethernet, wifi working temporarily so i can run all prime drivers?

Elkjøp, which is the Norwegian version of Elgiganten, has said the same. That it certainly wouldn't arrive before 27.03.13

Care to share a link to the best buy order page? I searched for all the samsung laptops, but I can't find it.

Just to confirm, you are talking about the 15.6" Series 7 Chronos Model H with i7 CPU, 8870m and 1080p glossy display, correct?

Find an Ethernet cable for internet, or go on another computer, run the Samsung SW Update program, download all the drivers in their entirety to a flash drive, plug into your internet-less Chronos, install from there.

I don't think individual drivers are available anywhere from samsung yet outside of the sw update program. You might try grabbing the intel drivers for that model wireless card and see if that will get you running. Or if you have a wired connection somewhere you could could plug into that and run the sw update to get the drivers updated.

    A couple questions...

    1. How was the difficulty on getting the case apart, the drive swapped and it all put back together?

    2. Why are you going with a windows 7 install? I have machines with both and Windows 8 is faster and easier to get around in with or without touch, but especially with touch if you have a multi-touch display like the chronos. I'm a developer and spend 99% of my time in the desktop and windows 8 auto boots there for me no problems. I only use the metro interface for app testing and to quickly find an app to run.

Stock results with my GT650M GDDR5 and i7 3610QM (Dell inspiron 17R SE):

    - Test 1: 73120 (Graphics 96447, Physics 39600)
    - Test 2: 9435 (Graphics 11379, Physics 5905)
    - Test 3: 1520 (Graphics 1556 , Physics 8177, Combined Score 636)

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Dell Inc. 04M3YM

So if drivers etc gets smoothened out HD8870M should be roughly 25% more powerful than GT650M.

And from the scores ive got on the 8770 model (44722, 5669, 661)., its noticeably slower than the gt650m, 39% faster in test 1, 40% faster in test 2 and 57% faster in test 3 in fact.

That makes me rethink a bit on the 8770. Its a hell of a machine but if the 8870 version hits the streets and its not more than a hundred more with similar specs or $250-300 more with an SSD it might be worth returning and getting the 8870. Those are ALL big if's though.

Here are very good charts of laptops including the new ASUS VZ 650M results of the new 3Dmark
AnandTech.com - 3DMark for Windows Launches; We Test It with Various Laptops

In the second and especially the third most demanding test the 8870M has around a 50-60% higher score than the stock 650M in the asus VZ (1300 vs 2000) !
In the first test however the 650M is slightly higher.
This card is going to be a beast if proper optimized drivers are delivered for every 3D rendering methods around.

Looking at those benchmark results, I don't think the new 3dmark is utilizing the 8770 at all. My results are almost exactly the same as the ASUS N56V HD4000 results.

I think the 8770 has an issue too indeed. Maybe you ran the benchmark in silent mode or it did use the Intel HD4000 ? Because the performance you got on the 8770 is very poor compared to what's its supposed to deliver. Try going into the enduro settings and fiddle with it I suppose.

alright finally got windows 7 pro up and running with LAN drivers only so far

missing a bunch of other drivers, and there's practically no support for alot of missing drivers

samsung sw update ran, but will not force/manual install the windows 8 drivers so i guess im SOL..

i ran a backup factory image of windows 8 and will attempt to use recovery into that soon

right now i cant even get graphics/wifi to work properly on win7

If I went the SSD route I just figured I would clone the HD to the SSD before putting it in, then put it in and reboot. Although im not sure the migration tools that come with the 840 work that well from reviews ive read.

yea i thought about that but HDD + SSD sectors are set up differently and most reviews usually prove clean installs are the best route to approach

god, i used windows 8 for about a week and couldnt stand the bloatware on the metro interface

looks like ill have to do a clean windows 8 install in about a half hour

alchemist did you install a 840pro with the migration software?

Why is the 8870m vastly superior to the 650m in 3Dmark11 but not with the newest 3Dmark?

Unfortunately in your log there is no trace of 8870m.
This is just because you have to start a program that uses 8870m before to launch HWINFO,
because if you launch HWINFO with GPU off, it is not able to create a log with something that has no detected from the beginning.
Also you can post directly the CSV file in this forum, maybe using zip format.

About CPU, considering the load on it and the temps, I don't see throttling on CPU while performing 3Dmark, CPU is working for most of time in turbo mode 3.2GHz, but there is something of strange, because sometime CPU has worked at less than 10MHz!!!

So could be very helpful if you repeat that test, with my suggestion.

Every benchmark comes at things a little differently, Personally i still prefer 3dmark 06 to 11 for some reason that I can't put my finger on. 3dmark 11 does test newer direct x versions though which is a good thing.

The new 3dmark will either be the best and most accurate or the worst benchmark out there though because its doing something completely new. Its trying to be a device independent benchmark... where 500 on a PC is equivilent to 500 on a Mac or android or iOS device. If they get it right everything will be tested on equal ground, so you could see if that new windows tablet really can hold its own against an iPad 3 or whatever. But it has to work, and its kinda new so nobody knows how well it will work yet.

I think thats why they have 3 tests... The third test is likely beyond the capabilities of many devices.

Edit: Also, its not beyond the realm or reason that the GPU makers use the benchmarks when testing their designs, as they know there is always a battle between the big two.

I'm considering it. I don't mind a German keyboard and write a lot in German. Shipping will be horrible, but oh well. I'm looking at the 17-incher bc of the optical drive. It's available on amazon.de, but without a touchscreen, which I really want too.

Thanks. It's just strange that an 8870m performs about 50% better than the 650m on 3Dmark11 and about 30% worse on the newest (first test). I understand different versions may perform better on some cards than te previous version but this gap is huge.

To Avior: have you tried updating your graphics driver, or aren't there any available? And do you have some games? I'm sorry if I'm asking too much but I'm curious how well your 8870m does on 3Dmark11? And does your notebook get hot?

Is there really no-one that wants to order the 8870m 15" version from Germany? Because, if we can believe them, some stores can deliver them within a week. At least that's what they claim.

To which country? I'm still doubting if I could handle the change from AZERTY to QWERTZ.

I think it would but whether it is the best laptop for you depends on a lot of other preferences. If you don't need a lot of mobility for example, there might be cheaper and/or faster alternatives. You can always make a thread in the "what notebook should I buy" forum and fill in the sticky. It really helps finding the best laptop for you.

    Just for your information:
The 17" has no touch screen in any version, also it has a standard TN panel, so any PLS, MVA or IPS display.

The Chronos would likely excel at video editing, you might want to beef up the memory to 12gb though depending on the software and size of projects used. Gaming is a secondary concern for me, I'll primarily use it for Programming and 3d animation and rendering. It has plenty of horsepower, you can't get much more processing power in a portable and those with any kind of battery life are few and far between.

    PLS/IPS > MVA > TN

This is not true, there are IPS panels with ridiculous space color, for example that used on ASUS U500VZ/UX51VZ, Sony S15, while the TN panel used in XPS 15 L502X has a space color of 95%,(adobeRGB) that used on Asus/Sony is around 60%. then this generalization PLS / IPS> MVA> TN is wrong.

Thanks Alchemist! As I recall the 15.6" Chronos on display at CES had 16GB of DDR3 RAM; that's what I was hoping to get. It also sounds like (from reading this thread) that I can replace the 1TB 5400rpm HDD with an SSD, which I assume would be preferable for video editing, is that correct?

It also voids your warranty, I believe. 12gb RAM and this i7 with the 1GB dedicated graphic should be more than enough for video editing.

Update after a day. I love this thing. It's a beast.

Display- Perfect! Load up a high res screen as well and it's fantastic. Brightness is high, that's for sure.
Speed- Fast, does everything I need it to do quick and simple. My internet sucks so I can't tell whether it's the laptop or my internet for low speeds.
Build quality- The best I've seen/used/felt. Like I said before, feels better built than my friends MacBook pro that is $1500 more with lesser specs than mine. (I laugh at him constantly for that)
Speakers-WOW! Definitely loud and clear. Full blown movie and didn't hear any distortion at all.
Battery- More than enough. Averaging 7-9 hours full charge.

Just some thoughts after a day and a half.

Yea, the 16gb is what I wanted too, my main point of contention with the model on sale now through best buy. In general 8gb is more than enough for most users. Video Editing, Audio Editing, Running Virtual Machines, etc. are things where more is better where memory is concerned. 16gb is better, but 12 is the max you can go with this chronos, and there isn't anything else out there with the combination of touch, battery life and power that this has.

SSD vs HD is a tough one... Video takes alot of space so having an HD will let you work better on large videos, but SSD would be faster. Also SSDs have limited write capabilities so alot of video editing would likely wear them faster than someone surfing and checking email would. I originally planned to put in an SSD but thinking of sticking with the HD as it gets 20 second boots and 2 second resumes out of the box. I could cut my space to 1/4 of the HD and double my speed for a a couple hundred dollars but don't know if its really worth it.

This laptop may seriously go back. This this is SLOW as crap. I can barely do anything as it takes at least a few minutes to get it usable and then it just LAGS. I uninstalled that Intelligent memory crap, still slow. Not sure is going on but this sucks! Anyone have any ideas what I can do to solve it? Stock configuration day 2.

What are you trying to do with it? Mines quick and opens everything. Apps on the metro look take a bit but that's normal.

Nothing that is my point. Just power it on and wait after I login and it's not usable for a while. When I go to the desktop and click on stuff I sit there with the blue circle spinning for a while.

Doesn't make sense. I'd go and return it for a new one. You may have messed something up when uninstalling, if not, may be a dud. It happens.
