If I remember right, on the left side of the trackpad, in the upper left corner of that half of the palm rest.

One more question: since the fan is right below the screen blowing up, would this be bad for the screen, since the screen would get extremely hot?

I don't think it's necessarily good for the laptop but I feel confident it can withstand it. If I put my palm on my 46" plasma TV panel, the thing gets very hot and has been running fine for about 4 years. Point being electronics are now designed to withstand the heat that they create. Would be kind of stupid if they weren't really as it would cost the manufacture a ton of cash in repairs and lost reputation.

However to be assured in my own mind, I wouldn't keep the laptop running at full pelt for days on end, even though it might be fine with this, since I don't know for sure, I would at least give it a short break every few hours after heavy gaming / intensive, heat generating tasks.

When I run GTA IV on the machine, it does get very hot above and slightly to the right of the keyboard (So glad this isn't on the WASD section of the keyboard!). It doesn't seem to make any difference to the gaming or the machine itself as of yet (Framerates still consistant after a few hours) and I have had the thing running for a few hours at a time a couple of times now.

I Played BF3 yesterday and at first I was like "lets see what this beast can handle", only to get dissapointed because I had to run it with settings turned on low to handle it without lag.

I was an idiot as it turned out. I was playing on the HD 4000, and after plugging in the AC Adapter, changing windows power settings to "high peformance" and catalyst control center to maxumum performance this thing maxed out everything on ultra with no lag at all @ 720p. Haven't tried 1080 yet, but im not gonna play in that anyway..

BF3 on high at 1080p looks fabulous on this screen. Even medium at 1080p looks better than ultra 720p. You should definitely try it.

1080p all the way. I found it to be very grainy on anything lower.

I found the same. Native resolution looks a lot better and AA is not needed as much, making the game look and run better. Even 900p looks a lot less sharp than 1080p

And the majority of the specs make sense.

Has anyone tested Borderlands 2? I'm interested in the performance with both the 8870 and 8770 versions, though I know not many people have the 8870 as of yet.

Yeah..that was me. Why don't you simply quote me directly?

My fool opinion is this: At least with Lenovo, you are being given the option of the upcoming Nvidia 750m directly from the vendor. The 8870 version sighting in US remains to be a mystery to this day. Why would Lenovo put the 750M as an option if they didn't have the hardware so it either means they've made a contract already with NVidia to supply it end of this month OR Lenovo somehow already got hold of the 750m chips and have started to put it in their gaming laptops. Again, Lenovo has been in this business FAR more so than Samsung. Not dishing out Samsung as I think they've really started to come out with excellent hardware for a very affordable price but they need to stand behind their words and do a better job at providing driver support.

The 8870 is a mobility card that still doesn't have the official correct driver to this DAY!!! And the laptop was released in Europe almost 2 months back. Samsung is still 'working' on it. NVidia in the past has always been better at driver releases and optimization more so ATI.

So if you want to call somebody a fool, you might wanna try Samsung instead. Just a thought.

Oh..if this makes you feel any better, I cancelled my Lenovo order last night as I decided to stick to console gaming and laptop gaming would be casual. As it is, I might end up re-buying the Bestbuy version (open box for $1049) sometime today or tomorrow.

Has anyone heard anything more about the black version? I set a Google Alert a month ago for the words "ATIV Book 8", but nothing new came out :( it's so frustrating, since the silver version has been available in my country for 3-4 weeks

I did quote you directly, about a page or so back.

Also, I don't know why you're getting all excited about the 750m...it's literally just about the same performance as the 650m, a little better, which the Y500 currently already has. And so does this Macbook Pro Retina I have here. And so does the 8770m model of the Chronos, actually.

There literally is absolutely no reason to get that awful, flawed, cheap, unpremium Y500. If you want a laptop with the performance of the 750m (AKA 650m), there are literally like 10+ options for you. Asus Zenbook, Chronos 8770m, Macbook Pro Retina, and tons others.

I see you've come to your senses canceling, then.

This is normal for machines with grilles at the hinge. My Macbook Pro Retina does exactly this, except I bet it gets way, WAY hotter than this Chronos haha.

This really isn't the place to be bashing the Y500. Please try to keep this on topic...which is difficult considering the dearth of new information we have on a US-based release of the 8870 unit :p

do you use it? if you do, can you describe what you are using it for and when.

I've been thinking of buying the NP780Z5E but was concerned with the problems of the video card lacking a driver ,is that still an issue for the 8770M?

I use it infrequently. I do like using it on the tile based home page and find myself occasionally using it when reading long internet articles. To be honest though, the touchpad on this thing is a dream and the two finger scroll is good enough it somewhat negates the touchscreen in that regard.

It's tough to know if the driver is working properly. All I can tell you is that SimCity runs much worse when I have it running off of battery rather than when I have it plugged in. I would think that this is caused by cpu being underclocked? as well as the video card switching over to the Intel HD 4000

I just purchased the 8770 model. Any questions? Send me a PM and I'll answer them for you :) It's a fantastic computer, and the video card is definitely fantastic, despite what others say.

EDIT: Or you can just post them here so others can see.

If you type np780z5e into futureshop's search bar, you are redirected to the previous years model. This could be a sign that release is imminent as they clear inventory. Hopefully it's the one with the 8870.

I actually ended up using it more than I thought I would. The start "menu" or screen or whateveryouwanttocallit is just so touchscreen friendly. I ended up throwing windows back and forth too, then scrolling sites was easy when I wanted to show people stuff by pointing then dragging around.

It's an extremely nice feature to have, but it's more of a gimmick to me to be honest. I'm a mouse and keyboard guy, but the touchscreen is nice for scrolling pages, especially when I'm writing in my right hand and using my laptop. Do I like it? Yes of course. Is it practical? Very. But could I live without it? Yes. It's not an essential feature, but I love it.

Plus 2 here. At first, I was really skeptical of Win8 and touchscreen on a laptop. I mean if I'm looking at the screen, why the hell do I need to use the touchscreen when I have the full functionality of the keyboard and trackpad at my expense?

Then when I got the Bestbuy version, I played around with it and 2 days later, I found myself swiping and pinching the screen a lot more than what I had originally thought. Zoomin in pics in FB, etc is really neat.

One Sunday, I was being a couch potatoe for half a day and used the laptop on my lap for a good 3-4 hrs (on battery). I watched Hulu/Netflix from the Metro apps using the touchscreen to navigate around. The laptop did get warm but not too comfortable. My toddlers also used the Samsung drawing apps (another Metro app) using the touchscreen. The Bing Travel metro app is another good one to use the touchscreen with, especially when you launch the live videos and use the touchscreen to move the camera around.

IMO, MS has spent a lot of money, time and thought into Win8 and touchscreen technology so they would only expand the metro apps and functionality in the coming months.

Hence why I cancelled my Y500 Lenovo order. Decided that the touchscreen is something I'd rather have and not use it much rather than want it later on and not have it ;-).

But yea, on their site it says only 2 left, and it's on sale until thursday. At the store there's an empty spot where it used to be, and had 2 open box for sale for the old one.

Ditto, touchscreen - once you have it - makes a massive difference to productivity and usability. I flick so easily between touchscreen, touchpad and keyboard I really really miss my touchscreen when I use my work laptop (frustratingly I keep doing two things, scrolling with two fingers on the touchpad and swiping/tapping the screen - neither of which work on that device!) - in fact, my advice, if you use other PC's you should really avoid the Samsung 7 Chronos at all costs, it will spoil you with it's awesomeness!!

For all intent and purposes, they are identical with exception of the battery which is twice as big on the chronos (8 cells vs 4 cells).
I also wrote on the facebook page of Samsung US and they told me that they can't speculate on the availability of their products...

PS: this is my first post but i've been following that thread for the last week or so. ;)

It's really a pity that this notebook mounts an ati gpu... I've to work on Linux with several simulators and that would be really a problem. I think the only alternative (I need high mobility) is the Asus solution.

i was using it a lot the first few weeks, but i've since discovered the 2 finger touch scroll on the touchpad, and use that more. but i definitely see me using the screen in future, let's just wait for products to really harness the power of it. it's really slick using it for IE 8 and the other apps though. i would err on the side of caution and get the touch version: we never know what's around the corner from software makers...

and rotating the birds eye view in MS maps is so freaking cool. use this if you want to impress your friends!
